わたしたちは子孫と同胞に、キリストを信じ、神と和解するように説き勧めるために、熱心に記録し続けようと努めている。それは、わたしたちが自分の行えることをすべて行った後に、神の恵みによって救われることを知っているからである。ニーファイ第二書２５：２３

For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.  2 Nephi 25:23

In this scripture, Nephi teaches us about our most important duty in this life.  He explains why the Nephites worked so hard to record important spiritual things.  

この聖句で二ーファイは人生でもっとも重要な義務について教えています。彼は何故ニーファイ人が大切で霊的な事柄を記録に残すために一生懸命だったのか説明しています。

In a different scripture in The Book of Mormon, we are told that it was very hard to write on the plates.  It was not like writing with a pencil on paper.  It was hard work to put the words onto metal plates.  But the Nephite prophets understood why it was so important.  They understood what Nephi teaches us in this scripture.

モルモン書の別の箇所では版のうえに書き込むことがとても難しいことだと言っています。鉛筆で紙の上に書くのとは違い、金属の版に言葉をのこすことは難しい作業でした。しかしニーファイ人の預言者はそれがなぜそんなに大切なのか理解していました。彼らはニーファイがこの聖句で私たちに教えていることを理解していました。

The most important thing we can do in this life is to teach our families and our friends about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Nothing else is as important as doing that.

この世で私たちが出来る最も重要なことはイエスキリストの福音について家族や友人に教えることです。他の何事もそれ以上に重要なことはありません。

In this scripture, Nephi says “we labor diligently”.  “To labor” means to work hard.  “Diligently” means carefully, earnestly, thoroughly.  So to “labor diligently” doesn’t means just to work hard, but to work with all our power.  

この聖句でニーファイは「熱心に務める」よう語っています。「務める」とは熱心に働くという意味です。「熱心に」とは慎重に、まじめに、徹底的にと言う意味です。ですから「熱心に務める」とはただ単に一生懸命働くのではなく、力の限りに働くという意味なのです。

It means to work with great effort.  It means to work with all our energy.  It means to work until the job is completely finished, not just until we get tired.

それは最大の努力をもって働くという意味です。それは全エネルギーを使って働くという意味です。また仕事が完全に終わるまで働くという意味で、単に疲れるまでという意味ではありません。

What does Nephi say we should “labor diligently” to do?  He teaches us that we should labor diligently to help our families and our friends to believe in Jesus Christ and to keep the commandments of God.  

ニーファイは「熱心に務める」ため何をするように言っているでしょう。彼は私たちの家族や友達がイエスキリストを信じ、神の戒めを守る手助けをするために熱心に務めるようにと教えています。

That is the great assignment for each of us in this life.  We are to “labor diligently” to help others, to serve others, to teach others.  

これがこの世で私たちに与えられた最大の任務です。私たちは他人を助け、尽くし、教えるために熱心に務めるべきなのです。

There is no time limit placed on this assignment.  Nephi does not say that we should “labor diligently” one or two times.  He does not say that we should “labor diligently” only when it is convenient for us.  He does not say that we should “labor diligently” just until we get tired.

この任務には時間制限はありません。ニーファイは１，２回だけ「熱心に務める」ようにとは言っていませんし、都合の良いときだけ「熱心に務める」ようにとも言っていません。彼は飽きるまで「熱心に務める」ようにとも言っていません。

Most importantly, Nephi teaches us why we need to do this.  It is only after we do everything we can do ourselves that we receive the blessings we need.  Nephi says that we are saved by the grace of God “after all we can do.”

最も重要なのはニーファイが何故私たちはそれをするのか教えていることです。それは私たちが出来る全てのことをした後に必要な祝福を受けるからです。ニーファイは「わたしたちが自分の行えることをすべて行った後に」神の恵みにより救われると言っています。

I know that we have been given a great assignment in this life.  I know that there are many challenges and difficulties in this life.  But I know that, if we do “all that we can do”, we will receive all the promised blessings.  May we all look for opportunities this week to labor diligently to help others come unto Christ.

私はこの人生で大切な任務を受けていると知っています。私はこの人生で沢山のチャレンジや困難があると知っています。しかしもし私たちが「自分の行えることをすべて行う」ならば全ての約束された祝福を受けることを知っています。今週も他の誰かをキリストのもとに来る手助けをするよう「熱心に務め」る機会を探してみましょう。
