このように、もし信仰の目をもって実を期待しながら御言葉を養おうとしなければ、あなたがたは決して命の木の実を得ることができない。しかし、あなたがたが御言葉に養いを与えようとすれば、つまり、その木が生長を始めるときに、非常な熱意と、忍耐を伴う信仰を働かせてその実を期待しながら養いを与えようとすれば、それは根付くであろう。そして見よう、それは生長して永遠の命をもたらす木になるであろう。アルマ書３２：４０－４１

And thus, if ye will not nourish the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit thereof, ye can never pluck of the fruit of the tree of life.  But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life.  Alma 32:40-41

In this scripture, Alma teaches us an important lesson about our duties and responsibilities.  In the 32nd chapter of Alma, Alma teaches us about faith.  This is one of the best known chapters in the Book of Mormon.

この聖句ではアルマが私たちの義務と責任について大切なことを教えています。アルマ書３２章ではアルマは信仰について教えており、これはモルモン書の中で最もよく知られている章の一つです。

When we read this chapter, we often focus on verse 21, which is the most well-known scripture on faith.  But the last part of the chapter has some important messages as well.

この聖句を読むとき、しばしば信仰について最もよく知られている２１節に注目します。しかしこの章の最後の方でも大切なメッセージがあります。

In verses 26 through 43, Alma compares gaining a testimony of the gospel to planting a seed.  It is not enough just to plant the seed, Alma teaches us.  If we only plant the seed, then do nothing to help it grow, the plant will die.  It takes constant work and effort to help the plant grow.

２６節から４３節ではアルマが福音の証が育つことを種まきにたとえています。種をまくだけでは十分ではないとアルマは教えています。もし種をまいただけで育てるために何もしなければ、その植物は死んでしまいます。植物を育てるには絶えまない働きと努力が必要です。

It is the same with our testimonies.  

証についてもそれと同じことです。

We can have a strong testimony, but if we do not continue to do the things we are commanded to do, the testimony will wither and die.  We all know people who have had strong testimonies who have later fallen away from the true gospel path.

私たちは強い証を持つことはできますが、するように教えられたことをしなければ、証は枯れて死んでしまいます。一度は強い証を持っていても後に真の福音の道から離れてしまった人を誰もが知っています。

In this scripture, Alma reminds us that if we do not “nourish the word”, we can never “pluck the fruit of the tree of life”.  In other words, if we do not do the things that we should to have a strong testimony, our testimony will not grow or remain strong.

この聖句ではアルマが「み言葉を養う」ことをしなければ「決して命の木の実を得ること」が出来ないことを思い起こさせています。つまり、強い証を持つためにすべきことをしなければ、私たちの証は育ちもせず、強さを維持することも出来ないのです。

In verse 41, though, Alma promises us that if we will “nourish the word”, by “faith with great diligence, and with patience”, our testimonies will grow and become stronger.  Our testimonies will be “a tree springing up unto eternal life”.

しかし４１節でアルマは「非常な熱意と、忍耐を伴う信仰を働か」せて「み言葉を養う」ならば、私たちの証は成長し、強くなることを約束しています。私たちの証は「生長して永遠の命をもたらす木」になるのです。

As with all things in the gospel, the blessings are there, waiting for us.  But before we can receive the promised blessings, we must do our part.  We must keep the commandments.  We must work hard.  We must attend our meetings, say our prayers each day, study the scriptures, serve in our callings, and do our best to strengthen our testimonies.

福音のあらゆることがらのように、祝福は私たちのすぐそばにあるのです。私たちは熱心に働かねばなりません。私たちは証を強めるよう集会に出席し、毎日お祈りをし、聖典を学び、召しを果たし、最善を尽くさねばなりません。

If we do our part, the Lord will bless us with strong testimonies and faith.  Our testimonies will truly be “a tree springing up unto eternal life”.  We will be able to receive the reward promised to those who, with diligence, faith, patience, and long-suffering, wait “for the tree to bring forth fruit” (see verse 43).

もし自分のすべきことをすれば、主は強い証と信仰を祝福してくださいます。私たちの証は確かに「生長して永遠の命をもたらす木になる」のです。私たちはその木が実を結ぶのを待ちながら示した熱意と信仰と忍耐と寛容を携えた者に約束された報いを受けることが出来るのです。（43節）

I know that we must work hard to keep our testimonies strong.  I know that, if we follow the things that Alma has taught us, we will be able to have strong testimonies.  I know that we can receive the blessings promised to those who, with faith, go forward each day in spite of difficulties, trials, and troubles.

私は自分の証を強く保つよう熱心に働かねばならないことを知っています。私はアルマの教えたことがらに従えば、強い信仰を持つことが出来ることを知っています。苦難や試練、問題があっても信仰を持って毎日を歩む者に約束された祝福を受けることを知っています。

Let’s all work hard this week to “nourish” our testimonies.  Let’s do all those things that we know we need to do to increase our faith in our Savior Jesus Christ.   Let’s all try to do better this week.

今週も証を「養い育てる」ように頑張りましょう。私たちの救い主、イエス・キリストへの信仰を増すために知っているすべてのなすべきこと行いましょう。今週もより良い行いができますように。
