And when they had come to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it, for the oxen shook it. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. 2 Samuel 6:6-7
This well-known event in the Old Testament seems difficult to understand. Why would the Lord kill Uzzah for doing something to help protect the ark of God? It seems like Uzzah was doing something good. Why was he punished?
旧約聖書のこの有名な話を理解するのは難しいかもしれません。なぜ主は神の箱を守るためにウザを殺されたのでしょうか？ウザは良いこともしています。なぜ彼は罰せられたのでしょうか？
We read in Exodus about the instructions the Lord gave to Moses to make the ark. The ark was to be placed in the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle that traveled with the children of Israel during their wanderings in the wilderness.
出エジプト記には主が箱を作るためにモーセに指示を与えられたことが書かれています。箱は、荒野をさまよっている間、イスラエルの民と共に移動した幕屋の至聖所に置かれることになっていました。
No one was allowed to touch the ark. Not even the priests who were responsible for the ark in the temple were allowed to touch it. They had to put long gold-plated poles into rings that were attached to the ark. Once the poles were inserted, they could lift the ark and move it using the poles.
誰も箱に触れることは許されませんでした。神殿の箱の責任者である祭司でさえ、それに触れることは許されませんでした。彼らは箱に取り付けられた輪に長い金メッキの棒を入れなければなりませんでした。棒を入いて、彼らは箱を持ち上げ、棒を使ってそれを動かすことができました。
By David’s time, the tabernacle had been lost. The ark was stored in various protected sites at different times. After David was anointed king, he wanted to bring the ark to Jerusalem. He gathered together a great army and had a new cart built on which to transport the ark. Uzzah and his brother Ahio were given the assignment to drive the cart with the ark to Jerusalem.

At some point in the journey, there was a rough spot in the road and the cart bounced around. Uzzah, fearing that the ark would be damaged, put his hands on it to steady it. But Uzzah did not have authority to touch the ark. And, he failed to understand that the Lord himself would protect the ark.
旅の途中、道の荒れた場所があり、荷車が跳ね回っていました。ウザは箱が損傷するのではないかと恐れ、手で押さえました。しかし、ウザには箱に触れる権限がありませんでした。彼は、主ご自身が箱を守ってくださることを理解できませんでした。
Under the law of Moses, anyone who defiled anything sacred was to be put to death. In this case, the people saw that Uzzah touched the ark. As a reminder to the people that the ark was sacred and that no one should ever touch it, Uzzah was killed.
モーセの律法の下では、神聖なものを汚した者は誰でも死刑に処せられました。これが起こった時、人々はウザが箱に触れたのを見ました。箱は神聖であり、誰もそれに触れてはならないことを人々に思い起こさせるためにウザは殺されました。
What is the point of this story?

We have prophets and apostles who lead us today. They teach us the word of the Lord as they receive it by revelation. We do not have the right to make changes to what they teach us.

Do any of us try to “steady the ark” by changing the instructions we are given by the prophets? Do we look at what we are taught and decide that we only need to follow part of the counsel? Do we pick out the easy parts of a commandment and only obey those parts?
預言者からの勧告を変えて「箱を押さえよう」とする人はいますか？私たちは教えを受けるとき、勧告の一部に従うだけでよいと判断しますか？戒めのやさしい部分だけを選び出して、それだけに従うでしょうか？
We “steady the ark” when we try to rationalize our behavior of only keeping part of the commandments. We “steady the ark” when we try to dilute the instructions that we are given when they seem too hard. We “steady the ark” any time that we do not fully accept the counsel given to us by the Prophet, the Apostles, our own Stake President, or our own Bishop.
戒めの一部だけを守るという行動を合理化しようとするのは、「箱を押さえる」ことです。難しすぎると思われるとき、与えられた勧告を軽視しようとするのは、「箱を押さえる」ことです。預言者、使徒、ステーク会長、またはビショップから与えられた勧告を完全に受け入れないのは、「箱を押さえる」ことです。
We have been told to hold Family Home Evening. Do we follow that counsel or do we “steady the ark” when we think it is too hard. We have been told to study the “Come, Follow Me” material. Do we do that, or do we “steady the ark” by not spending any time studying. We have been told to attend our sacrament and other meetings each week. Do we attend our meetings, or do we “steady the ark” because it is not convenient to meet in person?
私たちは家庭の夕べを開くように言われています。その勧告に従いますか、それとも難しいと思うときに「箱を押さえ」ますか。「わたしに従ってきなさい」を勉強するように言われています。それをするか、それとも勉強する時間をとらないことで「箱を押さえ」ますか。私たちは毎週聖餐会や他の集会に出席するように言われています。それらに出席しますか、それとも都合が悪いので欠席して「箱を押さえ」ますか。
Let’s remember that this is the work of the Lord. He will protect the ark from falling off of the cart. We must not assume that we have the authority or the right to change the laws of the gospel.
これが主の業であることを忘れないでください。主が箱が荷車から落ちるのを防いでくださいます。福音の律法を変える権限や権利があると思い込んではいけません。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember to keep the counsel of our Prophet and other priesthood leaders. Let’s remember that the Lord leads his Church. He knows what is needed and what will happen. He will not let the ark fall off of the cart. Let’s do our best to go forward with faith and obey all the commandments exactly as they are taught to us.
