わたしは、「あなたがたはその行いによって彼らを見分けるのである」と言われた神の御言葉を覚えているからである。彼らの行いが善ければ、彼らも善い。モロナイ書７：５
For I remember the word of God which saith by their works ye shall know them; for it their works be good, then they are good also. Moroni 7:5
In chapter 7 of the book of Moroni, Moroni records some of the teachings of his father, Mormon. In this particular scripture, Mormon reminds us of an important principle.
モロナイ書７章ではモロナイが父モルモンの教えを記録しています。特にこの聖句でモルモンは大切な原則を私たちに思い起こさせています。
People are watching us all the time. They listen to the words we use. They watch our actions. They make judgements about us based on those words and those actions.
人は常に私たちを見ています。彼らは私たちの使う言葉を聞き、私たちの行動を見ています。彼らは私たちの言動を見て私たちを判断します。
What do people see when they watch you?
人はあなたの何を見ているのでしょう？
Do they see a person whose words and whose actions reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ? Do they see someone who lives the principles they say they believe in? Do they see someone whose words and whose actions are the same?
彼らはその人の言葉や行いがイエス・キリストの教えを反映しているのか、その人が信じていると主張する原則に従って生活しているのか、またその人が言うことと行いがあっているのか、そういったところを見ているのではないでしょうか？
Someone once said, “You may be the only scriptures that someone ever reads”. In other words, our words and our actions may help someone to want to learn more about Jesus Christ and his gospel. As followers of Jesus Christ, we should be living “scriptures” to those around us each day.
ある人がこのようなことを言いました、「あなたはその人が読む唯一の聖典となるかもしれない」と。言い換えれば私たちの言葉と行動が誰かをイエス・キリストやその教えを学びたい気持ちにさせるということです。イエス・キリストに従うものとして私たちは毎日周りの人々にとって生きる「聖典」であるべきです。
If our “works” are good, that is an outward sign to others that we are followers of Jesus Christ.
私たちの「行い」が良ければ私たちがイエス・キリストの従者であることを外面的に他の人に示すことになります。
What are our “works”?
私たちの「行い」とは何でしょう？
Our works are the small and simple things we do each day. Works include reading the scriptures. Works include saying our prayers. Works include attending our Church meetings.
私たちの行いは毎日行う小さく簡単な事柄のことです。その中には聖典を読むこと、お祈りをすること、教会の集会に出席することなどが含まれます。
Works also include providing service to others. Works include being friendly and helpful. Works include having a positive attitude, even when experiencing trials and difficulties.
他の誰かに奉仕することも含まれますし、親しみがあり誰かの役に立つこと、試練や苦難の中でも前向きな姿勢を持っていることも含まれるでしょう。
We do not have to have an important calling to have good works. We do not need to be the Bishop or the Relief Society president. We show our good works by serving to the best of our ability in whatever calling the Lord has given us.
私たちは良い行いをするのに立派な召しを持っている必要などありません。私たちはビショップや扶助協会の会長である必要もありません。主から受けた召しが何であろうと自分の力の限りを尽くして奉仕することで私たちの良い行いを示すのです。
In fact, the most important “works” may be those that on one else knows about. Helping someone who is in need, saying “Hello”, introducing ourselves to someone new at Church, being polite to others, or even just smiling, are all good works.
実際もっとも立派な「行い」とは誰にも知られない行いかもしれません。助けが必要な誰かを助け、教会でまだ新しい誰かに「はじめまして」と言って自己紹介し、他人に礼儀正しく、また、笑顔でいることだけでも皆よい行いなのです。
As we go through this week, let’s look for opportunities to show our good works. Let’s look for opportunities to let others know that we are followers of Jesus Christ. Let’s use kind, polite words with others, especially those of our own family.
私たちのよい行いを示す機会を探しながら今週も過ごしましょう。他の誰かに私たちがイエス・キリストの従者であると示せる機会を探してみましょう。親切で礼儀正しい言葉を使ってみましょう、特に自分の家族に対してそのようにしましょう。
As we do this, not only will our works be good, but we will also become good.
そうする時、私たちの行いが良いだけでなく、私達自身も良くなるのです。
