天使が立ち去ってから、レーマンとレムエルはまたもつぶやき始め、こう言った。「主がどのようにして、ラバンを我々の手に渡すことができるというのか。見よ、ラバンは力のある人で、五十人を指揮することができるし、五十人を殺すことさえできる。そればれば、どうして我々を殺せないわけがあろうか。」ニーファイ第一章３：３１

And after the angel had departed, Laman and Lemuel again began to murmur, saying: how is it possible that the Lord will deliver Laban into our hands?  Behold, he is a mighty man, and he can command fifty, yea, even he can slay fifty; then why not us?  1 Nephi 3:31

Laman and Lemuel, along with Sam and Nephi, had been given the assignment by the Lord to return to Jerusalem and to get the Brass Plates from Laban.  This was not an easy task and, as usual, Laman and Lemuel were complaining.  

レーマンとレムエルはサーム、ニーファイと共に主からエルサレムに戻り、レーバンから真鍮版を手に入れてくるよう命を受けました。これはやさしいことではありませんでした。レーマンとレムエルは何時ものように不平を言いました。

They had tried two times already to get the Brass Plates.  Both times had been failures.  Both times the boys had had to run away from the servants of Laban, who had been instructed to kill them.

彼らはすでに二度も真鍮版の獲得を試みましたがどちらも失敗に終りました。いずれもレーバンが彼らを殺すように命令した召し使いから逃げて来ました。

Laman and Lemuel, who did not want to accept the assignment in the first place, were angry with Nephi and wanted to give up.  Because getting the Brass Plates was so important, the Lord sent an angel to scold Laman and Lemuel and to tell all four of the boys to try again.  Nephi and Sam were willing to try again, but Laman and Lemuel kept complaining.

もともとその使命を受け入れようとしなかったレーマンとレムエルはニーファイに腹を立て、諦めようとしました。その真鍮版を手に入れることはとても大切だったので主は天使を送りレーマンとレムエルを誡め、四人の兄弟にもう一度行くように言われました。ニーファイとサームは喜んでもう一度やってみたいと思いましたがレーマンとレムエルは逆に不平を言い続けました。

“How is it possible?”, was their question.  They did not believe that the Lord could help them.  They did not believe that the Lord was more powerful than Laban. They did not believe that they could do what the Lord had asked them to do.

彼らは「そんなこと不可能だ」と言い返しました。彼らは主が助けてくださることを信じませんでした。主がレーバンより強いことを信じませんでした。主が彼らに命じられたことが出来ると信じませんでした。

“How is it possible?”.  

「そんなこと不可能だ」

Does this question ever get used in our own lives?  Do we ask, “how is it possible for me to get through this challenge?”.  Do we ask, “how is it possible for me to accomplish this assignment?”.  Do we ask, “how is it possible for me to forgive that person?”.  Do we ask, “how is it possible for me to be forgiven myself?”.

この疑問を私たちも持ったことがありませんか？私たちも「この問題を乗り越えることなんて出来ない」とか「この召しをどうして成し遂げれるだろう」などと思いませんか？「どうしてあの人を赦すことなどできるだろう」とか「どうして自分を赦すことなどできるだろう」などと思いませんか？

“How is it possible”.  This is one of Satan’s best tricks.  If he can make us doubt, he wins.  If he can make us give up, he wins.  If he can make us lose faith, he wins.

「そんなこと不可能だ」。それはサタンが使う武器のひとつです。彼が私たちに疑いを持たせれれば、彼の勝利なのです。彼が私たちに諦めさせれれば、また信仰を失わさせれば、彼の勝利なのです。

The scriptures are full of stories and examples showing “how it is possible”.  Miracles do happen in the work of the Lord.  The Lord guides his work.  He knows “how it is possible”.  

聖典には「それは可能です」を示すお話しや模範がいっぱいです。主のみ業には奇跡が起こります。主が御業を導かれます。主は「どのように可能になる」かをご存知なのです。

But, for it to be possible, we have to do our part.  We have to go forward with faith, not seeing the final result.  Just like Nephi, we have to do all that we can do to accomplish the assignments given to us.  We have to trust in the promises of the Lord, to trust that he knows “how it is possible”.

しかしそれを可能にするためには私たちがすべきことを行わねばなりません。結果が見えなくとも信仰を持って前進しなければなりません。ニーファイのように私たちは与えられた職務を遂行するために出来ることをすべて行わねばなりません。主の約束と、主が「どのように可能にされるか」をご存知であると信頼しなければなりません。

Asking “how is it possible?” is just an excuse.  It brings on darkness and depression.  We are actually saying, “it cannot be done”, or “I don’t want to try”.

「そんなこと不可能だ」というのは単に言い訳でしかありません。暗闇と落胆しかやってきません。それは実のところ「そんなことできない」とか「やってみたくない」と言ってることなのです。

Unlike Laman and Lemuel, Nephi did not ask, “how is it possible”.  He went forward with faith, “not knowing beforehand” what he was going to do.  He trusted in the Lord, was obedient, and took action.  Because of this, the Lord was able to help him obtain the Brass Plates.  

レーマンやレムエルとは違いニーファイは「そんなこと不可能だ」などとは言いませんでした。彼は何を行うのか分からなくても信仰を持って前進しました。主を信頼し、忠実であり行動を起こしました。そのおかげで主は彼を助け真鍮版を手に入れることが出来たのです。

Let’s banish the phrase “how is it possible” from our own vocabulary.  Let’s stop listening to Satan’s discouraging words.  Let’s start having greater faith in the Lord and greater trust that he knows “how it is possible”.  

あなたの辞書から「それは不可能だ」という言葉を払いのけましょう。サタンの落胆させる言葉を聞くのをやめましょう。主が「どのように可能とされるか」ご存知であるという強い信仰と信頼を持つようにしましょう。
