サムエルは育っていった。主が彼と共におられて、その言葉を一つも地に落ちないようにされたので、ダンからベエルシバまでイスラエルのすべての人は、サムエルが主の預言者と定められたことを知った。サムエル記上３:１９−２０

And Samuel grew and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.  And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord. 

1 Samuel 3:19-20

In the first 3 chapters of 1 Samuel, we read about the childhood of the prophet Samuel.  Samuel was an important prophet in the Old Testament.  He was the prophet of God during the time of Saul and David.  

サムエル記の最初の3章は、預言者サムエルの子供時代について書かれています。サムエルは旧約聖書の重要な預言者でした。彼はサウルとダビデの時代の神の預言者でした。

As a child, Samuel was dedicated to the Lord by his mother.  From his childhood, he served in the temple and assisted Eli, the prophet who was before Samuel.  

子供の頃、母親はサムエルを主に捧げました。子供の頃から、彼は神殿で奉仕し、サムエルの前の預言者エリを助けました。

Eli had some challenges in his family.  He had two sons, who were priests, but who did not keep the commandments.  They were wicked and committed many sins.  Eli did not do anything to stop his sons from committing sin.  Because Eli did not do enough to prevent his sons from sinning, the Lord rejected him as the prophet.

エリには家族の中でいくつかのチャレンジがありました。彼には二人の息子がいました。彼らは祭司でしたが戒めを守らなかったのです。彼らは邪悪で多くの罪を犯しました。エリは息子たちが罪を犯すことを止めませんでした。エリは息子たちが罪を犯すのを止めなかったので、主は預言者としての彼を拒みました。

One night, while Samuel was sleeping, the Lord called to him.  Samuel thought it was Eli calling, so he went to Eli to see what he wanted.  Eli said that he had not called him.  This happened three times.  

ある夜、サムエルが眠っている間に、主が彼を呼ばれました。サムエルはエリが呼んだのだと思ったので、何を望んでいるのかエリの所へ聞きに行きました。エリは彼を呼んではいないと言いました。このことは三度起きました。

On the third time, Eli realized that it was the Lord calling to Samuel.  He told Samuel to listen to what the Lord would tell him.  When the Lord called again, Samuel said “speak, for thy servant heareth”.  

3回目に、エリはそれが主がサムエルを呼ばれたことに気づきました。主の言われることを聞くようにとサムエルに言われました。サムエルは、主が呼ばれた時「しもべは聞きます。お話しください」と言いました。

The Lord told Samuel that since Eli had not done enough to stop his sons from committing sin, the Lord was going to destroy both of Eli’s sons.  Eli would no longer be the prophet.  Samuel was to become the new prophet.

主はサムエルに、エリが息子たちが罪を犯すのを止めなかったので、エリの二人の息子を滅ぼそうと言われました。もはやエリは預言者ではなくなり、新しい預言者にはサムエルがなることになりました。

Samuel was a young man when all this happened.  We are told that “Samuel grew and the Lord was with him”.  Samuel was recognized by all the people as the prophet of God (from Dan to Beer-sheba means, from the very northern part of Israel to the very southern part of Israel).

これらが起こったのは、サムエルが若い時でした。「サムエルは育っていった。主が彼と共におられた」と言われています。サムエルはすべての人々に神の預言者として認められました。（ダンからベエルシバとは、イスラエルの最北端から最南端までを意味します）

Just as in the days of Samuel, we have a living prophet with us today.  President Russell M. Nelson is the prophet of the Lord in our day.  

サムエルの時代と同じように、今日私たちには生ける預言者がいます。ラッセル・M・ネルソン大管長は、今日の主の預言者です。

Just as with Samuel, President Nelson was called by the Lord to be a prophet.  Just as with Samuel, President Nelson receives revelation directly from the Lord.  Just as with Samuel, President Nelson is recognized as the prophet of God by faithful members of the Church.

サムエルと同じように、ネルソン大管長は主から預言者として召されました。サムエルと同じように、ネルソン大管長は主から直接啓示を受けます。サムエルと同じように、ネルソン大管長は教会の忠実な会員から神の預言者として認められています。

And, just all Israel received instructions and counsel from Samuel, we receive instruction and counsel from our prophet.  The question is, will we be obedient or will we be like ancient Israel, who rejected the teachings and warnings of the prophet of God?

そして、すべてのイスラエルがサムエルから指示と勧告を受けたように、私たちは預言者から指示と勧告を受けています。問題は、私たちは従順であるのか、それとも神の預言者の教えと警告を拒んだ古代イスラエルのようであるのかと言うことです。

As we go through this week, let’s remember that the Lord always provides a prophet to lead his people, whenever the people are willing to keep the commandments.  Let’s remember that the prophet, whether in Israel in the days of Samuel, or here in our own time, teaches us what the Lord wants us to know.  Let’s remember that the counsel and instruction the prophet gives to us comes directly from the Lord.  Let’s do our best to always follow the prophet.

新しい週が始まります。人々が戒めを守ることをいとわないときは、主はいつでも民を導くために預言者を与えられることを覚えていましょう。サムエルの時代のイスラエルであろうと、今の時代であろうと、預言者は主が私たちに知ってほしいことを教えてくれることを覚えていましょう。預言者が私たちに与える勧告と指示は主から直接来ていることを忘れないでください。常に預言者に従うように最善を尽くしましょう。
