わたしが一心に志すのは、人々がアブラハムの神、イサクの神、ヤコブの神のもとに来て救われるように、説き勧めることである。ニーファイ第一書６：４
For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved. 1 Nephi 6:4
At the very beginning of his record, Nephi explains his reason for undertaking such a difficult task.
記録の最初で、ニーファイがその様な困難な務めを引き受けた理由を説明しています。
Have you ever considered what a difficult task it was for Nephi to engrave his message onto metal plates? Today, with all of our electronic devices, we rarely have to write anything ourselves. We can type anything we want and the software not only produces the written copy but also corrects our spelling errors.
ニーファイが金属板にメッセージを刻み込むことがどれほど困難なことだったかあなたは考えてみたことがありますか？今日、各種の電子機器のおかげで私たちが何かを自分の手で書くことなど殆どなくなりました。私たちは書きたいことは何でもタイプでき、ソフトが文章を書きだし、スペルまで校正してくれるのです。
Nephi did not have that option. He only had his hands, a writing implement, and metal plates.
ニーファイにはそのような選択肢はありませんでした。彼には自分の手と、筆記道具、金属板
しかありませんでした。
It was a very difficult task. We don’t know exactly what the process was that Nephi followed. Most likely, he first had to write on the plates with ink and brush the words that he wanted. After that, he had to go back and actually engrave those words into the metal.
それはとても困難な作業でした。ニーファイがどんな手順に従ったのか私たちにはよくわかっていません。おそらく彼は最初、版の上にインクと筆で書きたい言葉を書き、その後、再び金版にそれらの言葉を刻み込んだのでしょう。
Think how tiring that would be. For us, writing out a few pages in longhand makes our hands very tired. Imagine how much effort it would take to engrave our words on metal plates!
それがどれほど骨の折れる作業だったか考えてみてください。私たちが手書きで数ページ書き出すだけでもとても手が疲れます。私たちが書く言葉を金属板に刻み込むにはどれ程の努力がいるか想像してみてください。
But Nephi knew how important this task was. In spite of the great difficulty and in spite of the long hours it required, Nephi did not give up.
しかしニーファイはそれがどれほど重要な作業なのか理解していました。大変困難であり時間もかかったにもかかわらずニーファイは諦めませんでした。
Why?
何故でしょう？
He tells us in this short scripture. He tells us that he is doing all this simply to be able to help other people come unto Christ. Jesus Christ is the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
彼はただ人々がキリストのもとに来れるようそうするのだとこの短い聖句の中で説明しています。イエス・キリストはアブラハムの神、イサクの神、ヤコブの神です。
There is a message in this for all of us.
ここにあるメッセージは私たちすべてのためでもあるのです。
Nephi worked diligently to help others come unto Christ. We need to follow his example and do everything that we can do to help others come unto Christ.
ニーファイは人々がキリストの元に来るよう献身的に働きました。私たちも彼の模範に従い人々がキリストの元に来るようできる限りのことをする必要があります。
It can be hard to talk to others about the gospel of Jesus Christ. If Nephi were here, I am sure he would tell us that it was hard to engrave words on metal plates.
人々にイエス・キリストの福音について話すのは難しいかもしれません。もしニーファイがここにいれば彼は間違いなく金属板に言葉を彫り込むのは大変だったと言うことでしょう。
Just as we have been blessed by Nephi’s hard work, we should be willing to do all that we can to help others to receive the joy and blessings of the gospel. We have been given much and much is expected of us.
私たちはニーファイの重労働によって祝福を受けているように、私たちも人々が福音の喜びと祝福を受けるようできる限りのことをしたいと思うべきです。
This week, let’s try to follow the example of Nephi and do our best to persuade others to come unto Christ. Let’s look for opportunities to do something difficult. Let’s look for opportunities to help others find the blessings of the gospel.
今週、ニーファイの模範に従い、人々がキリストの元に来れるよう最善を尽くしましょう。行うのが困難な機会を探してみましょう。人々が福音の祝福を見つける手助けをする機会を探してみましょう。
When Nephi made his record, he probably did not know what a blessing it would be to millions of people. In the same way, we do not know what the results of our actions will be. It may be that by our doing something difficult, we may bring many people to know about Jesus Christ.
ニーファイが記録を作ったとき、彼はどれほど多くの人に祝福をもたらすことになるのか理解していなかったことでしょう。同じように、私たちも自分の行動の結果がどうなるのかわかりません。何か困難なことを行うことによって多くの人をイエス・キリストについて知るよう導くことになるのかもしれません。
I know that we have a solemn duty to share the message of the gospel with those around us. I know that we have many opportunities to stand as witnesses of Jesus Christ. I know that if we follow the example of Nephi, many people will be blessed by our efforts.
私たちには周りにいる人々に福音のメッセージを分かち合うという神聖な務めがあることを私は知っています。私たちにはイエス・キリストの証人となる多くの機会があります。ニーファイの模範に従えば多くの人が私たちの努力の結果、祝福を受けるということを私は知っています。
