したがって、おお、我が子よ、来たいと思うものは誰でも来て、価なしに命の水を飲むことができる。また、来たいと思わない者はだれも来るように強いられない。しかしその者は、終わりの日にその行いに応じて回復を受ける。アルマ書４２：２７

Therefore, O my son, whosoever will come may come and partake of the waters of life freely; and whosoever will not come the same is not compelled to come; but in the last day it shall be restored unto him according to his deeds.  Alma 42:27

In chapters 39-42 of Alma, Alma is giving counsel to his son, Corianton.  Corianton had served as a missionary to the Zoramites, but had not been a faithful and diligent missionary.  He had many questions about the gospel and apparently struggled with his testimony at times.  Alma tries to teach him about many different principles of the gospel.

アルマ書の39〜42章では、アルマが息子のコリアントンに勧告を与えています。コリアントンは宣教師としてゾーラム人を教えていましたが、忠実で勤勉な宣教師ではありませんでした。彼は福音について多くの疑問があり、明らかに自分の証にジレンマを抱えていました。アルマは福音の様々な原則について彼に教えようとしています。

At the end of his counsel, Alma reminds us of a very important doctrine.  That doctrine is the principle of free agency.

アルマは彼の勧告の終わりで非常に大切な教義を教えています。その教義とは自由意志の原則です。

Free agency is the principle that is at the very heart of the gospel.  Every commandment that we have is based upon the principle of free agency.  The War in Heaven was a war fought to protect the principle of free agency.

自由意志は福音の中核にある原則です。私たちが受けているすべての戒めは、自由意志の原則に基づいています。 天での戦いは、自由意志の原則を守るために争った戦いでした。

In verse 27, Alma talks about this principle.  He reminds Corianton, and us as well, that it is up to each one of us, as individuals, to choose whether or not we will keep the commandments.  It is up to each one of us, as individuals, to choose whether or not we will be a follower of Jesus Christ.  It is up to each one of us, as individuals, to choose the path we want to follow.

27節で、アルマはこの原則について語っています。彼はコリアントンと私たちにも、戒めを守るかどうかを選択するのは私たち自身の責任であることを教えています。イエス・キリストの従者になるかどうかを選択するのは、私たち自身の責任ですし、私たちがたどる道を選ぶのも、私たち自身の責任なのです。

Notice that Alma teaches us that the gospel is available to everyone, no matter who they are, where they live, or what their circumstances may be.  Anyone who will repent can come and “take of the waters of life freely”.  

私たちが何者であるとか、どこに住んでいるのか、状況がどのようなものであるかに関係なく、誰でも福音を知ることができると、アルマは教えていることに注目してください。悔い改める人なら誰でも来て「命の水を自由に」取ることができるのです。

No one is excluded because they have no money.  No one is excluded because of their lack of opportunity for education.  No one is excluded because of where or when they live on earth.  Anyone who chooses to accept the gospel can partake of the blessings.

お金がないという理由で誰も除外されることはありません。教育がないということで除外されている人もいません。どこに住んでいるとか、いつ住んでいたのかによって、誰も除外されません。福音を受け入れることを選んだ人であれば、誰でも祝福を受けることができるのです。

As with most principles of the gospel, it requires action on our part as the first step.  The gospel is available, but we have to make the decision to accept it.  We must make the decision to keep the commandments.  We must make the decision to follow our Savior, Jesus Christ.

福音の他の原則と同様に、最初のステップとして私たちは行動することが必要です。福音は誰にでも用意されていますが、それを受け入れるかどうかを選択する必要があります。私たちは戒めを守るという選択をしなければなりません。 私たちは救い主イエス・キリストに従うという選択をしなければなりません。

Sometimes, we want so much to have someone else accept the gospel and its principles that we forget the importance of the law of free agency.  This is most often true when we have a child that, like Corianton, is struggling with their testimony.  As a concerned and worried parent, we sometimes try to force that child to accept the gospel.  But, as Alma teaches us, that is not the right way. 

時には、私たちは他の誰かに福音とその原則を受け入れてもらいたために、自由意志の原則の大切さを忘れてしまいがちです。これは、コリアントンのように、証に苦しんでいる子供がいる場合に最も当てはまります。心配している親として、私たちは時折その子供に福音を受け入れさせようとします。しかし、アルマが教えているように、それは正しい方法ではありません。

We have a duty and a responsibility to teach the gospel to everyone, especially those of our own family.  We want everyone to enjoy the great blessings of the gospel.  We want to show them, by our example, the happiness that comes from keeping the commandments.  

私たちはすべての人に、特に私たちの家族に福音を教える義務と責任があります。福音のすばらしい祝福を誰にでも味わってもらいたいと感じています。私たちは、戒めを守ることから来る幸せを、私たちの模範によって示したいと感じています。

Still, we cannot compel anyone to gain a testimony or keep a testimony.  The law of free agency cannot be violated.  Sadly, there are those who choose not to accept the gospel after is has been taught to them.  There are those who accept the gospel for a time, but then wander off from the covenant path. 

それでも、証を得たり、証を持ち続けるように強要することはできません。 自由意志の原則に反することはできないのです。 悲しいことですが、教えられた後に福音を受け入れないことを選ぶ人もいます。しばらく福音を受け入れていながら、聖約の道を離れる人もいます。

In the end, for the Lord’s judgement to be fair, it must be based upon the decisions freely made by each individual.

結局のところ、主の裁きが公正であるためには、各個人が自由に下した選択に基づいていなければならないのです。

As we go through this week, let’s look for opportunities to share the gospel and its blessings with others.  Let’s be diligent in helping others learn about the gospel, both through our teaching and through our example.  Let’s always remember, though, that free agency is the most important principle and that everyone must make their own choices.

新しい週が始まります。福音とその祝福を他の人と分かち合う機会を探して過ごしましょう。私たちの教えと模範を通して、他の人が福音について学べるよう勤勉に過ごしましょう。 ただし、自由意志が最も重要な原則であり、誰もが自分で選択する必要があることを決して忘れないでください。
