おお、わが子ヒラマンよ、見よ、あなたは若い。だから、わたしの言葉を聞いて、わたしに学ぶように勧める。神に頼るものはだれであろうと、試練や災難や苦難の中にあって支えられ、また終わりの日に高く上げられるということをわたしは知っているからである。アルマ書３６：３

And now, O my son Helaman, behold, thou are in thy youth, and therefore, I beseech of thee that thou wilt hear my words and learn of me; for I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day. Alma 36:3

In the 36th chapter of Alma, Alma teaches and instructs his son, Helaman.  Included in this teaching is a great message of hope for all of us.

アルマ書36章では、アルマが息子のヒラマンを教え導いています。 この教えには、希望について素晴らしいメッセージが含まれており、私たちも多く学ぶことができます。

Alma begins by exhorting his son to give strict attention to the words that Alma will speak.  Alma briefly reminds Helaman of some of the terrible trials and afflictions that the Nephites have had to endure in the past.  

アルマはまず、彼が話す言葉に細心の注意を払うよう息子に勧めています。アルマは息子ヒラマンに、ニーファイ人がこれまで耐えなければならなかった恐ろしい試練と苦難について思い出させています。

The Nephites were in bondage to the Lamanites and were not able to deliver themselves from that trial.  But because of their humility and faith, the Lord freed them from that affliction.

ニーファイ人はレーマン人の束縛下にありました。その試練から抜け出すことができませんでしたが、彼らの謙遜さと信仰のために、主は彼らをその苦痛から解放されました。

Alma teaches Helaman, and all of us as well, a very important lesson.  Alma testifies that the Lord will always help and protect those that have faith in God.

アルマはヒラマンと私たち全員にとても重要な教訓を教えています。アルマは、常に神を信じる人々を、主が助け守ってくださることを証しています。

Alma says that those who trust God will be supported in their trials, in their troubles, and in their afflictions.

アルマは、神を信頼する人々は、試練や災難、そして苦難の中でも支えられるであろうと述べています。

It is important to note that Alma does not say that those who have faith in God will be free from all trials, troubles, or afflictions.  In fact, it sounds as if he is saying that we will all have to experience those trials, troubles, and afflictions at various times during our mortal life.

アルマは、神を信じる者がすべての試練、災難、苦痛から解放されるとは言っていないことはとても重要です。 実際、彼は私たち全員が私たちの死すべき人生のさまざまな時期に試練や災難、苦難を経験しなければならないだろうと言っているように思えます。

We know that one of the most important reasons we have come to this earth is to learn how to make good decisions.  We learn, often by making mistakes, that making poor decisions leads, sooner or later, to unhappiness.  

私たちがこの地上に来た最も重要な目的のひとつは、正しい選択を行う方法を学ぶことです。 私たちは、往々にして間違いを犯し、間違った選択をすることで、遅かれ早かれ、それが不幸な結果となることを学びます。

But even making good decisions does not guarantee freedom for trials, troubles, or afflictions.  In fact, making good decisions often leads to persecution and difficulties.  It is not easy to make good decisions.  It is not easy to stand for truth.  It is not easy to choose the right.

しかし、良い選択を下しても、試練、災難、苦難から必ず解放されるものではありません。事実、正しい選択を下すことが、迫害と困難につながることがよくあります。正しい選択をするのは容易ではありません。真実を理解するのは簡単ではありません。

It is by making good decisions, even in the face of persecution and rejection, that we are able to increase in faith and testimony.  It is by standing for the truth, even when it is unpopular, that we increase in faith and testimony.  It is by choosing the right, even when it means personal hardship, that we increase in faith and testimony.

迫害や拒絶に直面しても、正しい選択をすることで私たちは信仰と証を強めることができます。一般的に受け入れられていないことでも、真理を守ることで私たちは信仰と証を強めることができます。また個人的な悩みや試練であっても、正しい選択をすることで私たちは信仰と証を強めることができます。

As we learn to make good decisions, our faith in God will grow.  As our faith in God grows, we will qualify for the blessings that we need.  We will, as Alma teaches us, be supported by the Lord in all our trials, troubles, and afflictions.

正しい選択をすることを学ぶにつれ、私たちは神への信仰が成長します。神への信仰が深まるにつれ、私たちは必要な祝福を受ける資格を得ます。アルマが教えているように、私たちはすべての試練や災難、苦難の中にいても倒れることが無いように主が支えてくださるのです。

Most importantly, as we make good decisions, as we keep the commandments, as we become better followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we will be lifted up at the last day.  

最も重要なことは、私たちが正しい選択をし、戒めを守り、救い主イエス・キリストのより良い従者になると、私たちは終わりの日に高く上げられるのです。

As we go through this week, let’s remember what Alma taught Helaman.  Let’s remember that trials and troubles are an important part of our mortal journey.  Let’s remember that making good decisions, even when it is hard, will bring down blessings from heaven.  Let’s remember that the Lord will support us and, if we endure to the end, will lift us up at the last day.

新しい週が始まります。アルマがヒラマンに教えたことを忘れないように過ごしましょう。試練と災難は、死すべき世の重要だということを忘れないでください。難しい選択であっても、正しい選択をすると天から祝福がもたらされることを忘れないでください。主が私たちを支え、私たちが最後まで耐え忍べば、終わりの日に私たちを高く上げてくださることを覚えていましょう。
