しかし、もしあなたがたがその木に構わず、養い育てることに心を配らなければ、見よ、それが根付くことはないであろう。そして、太陽の暑さが及んでその木を熱すると、その木はまったく根がないので枯れてしまうであろう。そこであなたがたは、その木を抜いて捨てる。さてこれは、種が良くなかったからでもなければ、実が好ましいものでなかったからでもない。ただ、あなたがたの土地がやせているためである。あなたがたがその木に養いを与えようとしないので、実を得ることができないのである。アルマ書３２：３８－３９

But if ye neglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it has no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out.  Now this was not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desireable; but it is because your ground is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof.  Alma 32:38-39

In this chapter of Alma, Alma and his companion, Amulek, are preaching the gospel to the Zoramites.  As Alma and Amulek taught the Zoramites, they were rejected by most of the Zoramites.  However, the poor people of the Zoramites were willing to listen to the message of the gospel.

アルマ書のこの章では、アルマと同僚アミュレクがゾーラム人に福音を伝えています。アルマとアミュレクがゾーラム人を教えたとき、ほとんどのゾーラム人が彼らを拒みました。しかし、貧しいゾーラム人は喜んで福音のメッセージに耳を傾けました。

In order to teach the concept of faith to these humble people, Alma used the example of a seed.  He compared gaining a testimony of the gospel to that of planting a seed.  The example helps us learn about gaining a testimony.  We have all planted a seed at some time.  We have all seen a small seed sprout and grow into a beautiful flower.  

謙遜な人々に信仰の概念を教えるために、アルマは種をたとえに使いました。 彼は福音の証を得ることを種を植えることに例えました。このたとえは、証を得る方法を学ぶのに役立ちます。私たちは皆、信仰の種を蒔きました。 私たちは皆、小さな芽が出て、それが美しい花へと成長したのを目にしました。

Just like the humble people of the Zoramites, we too can gain a testimony of the gospel by following the steps taught by Alma.

The first step is to want to gain a testimony.  If we want to gain a testimony, action is required.  We need to do something.  A testimony does not just appear magically, any more than a beautiful flower will suddenly appear without a seed being planted first.

最初のステップは、証を得たいという気持ちです。 証を得るには行動が必要です。私たちは何かを行う必要があります。 証は種を植えることなく、突然美しい花が現れるという魔法のようには出てきません。

Once the seed has been planted, though, that is just the beginning.  We need to continue to do the things that will help that plant to grow.  We need to water it, make sure is gets enough sunlight, and pull out the weeds.  If we do these things, the plant will grow into a beautiful flower.

種を植えても、それはほんの始まりにすぎません。私たちは、その植物が成長するために行動し続ける必要があります。水をやり、十分な日光が当たるようにし、雑草を抜く必要があります。そうすることで植物は美しい花に成長します。

If we do the things that Alma taught, our testimony will also grow into a strong and healthy plant.  In fact, our testimony can become as strong as a tree, if we do the things that will help it grow.  

アルマの教えを実行すると、私たちの証も強くて健康な植物に成長します。実際、証の成長を促すことを行えば、私たちの証は木と同じように強くなるのです。

It takes constant care to keep a plant growing.  It takes constant care to keep a testimony strong.  We need to pray each day, to read the Book of Mormon and the other scriptures, to study the General Conference talks, and to serve in our callings.

植物を育て続けるには、常に世話をしなければなりません。 証を強く保つには常に世話をしなければなりません。 私たちは毎日祈り、モルモン書と他の聖典を読み、総大会のお話しを学び、私たちの召しを果たす必要があります。

During this time when we are not able to meet together as usual, it takes extra effort to keep our testimony healthy and strong.  We need to study the Come, Follow Me material.  We need to find ways to teach ourselves and our families, using the home-centered, Church-supported program.  We need to find ways to serve others.

If we neglect these things, our testimony will not grow.  It will begin to wither away.  It will not be strong and healthy.  We must be extra careful during these challenging times to ensure that our testimonies are carefully tended.

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the simple example of a seed, as taught by Alma.  Let’s remember that it takes effort and work to gain and to keep a testimony of the gospel.  Let’s remember that our testimonies will only be strong if we take action and do all that we can to strengthen them.
