さて、わたしの同胞よ、わたしたちはこれらのことを知っており、これはほんとうのことであるので、主なるわたしたちの神がわたしたちに与えてくださったこれらの第二の戒めについて神を怒らせ、神の激しい怒りを招くことのないように、悔い改めて、心をかたくなにしないようにしようではないか。そして、神の御言葉のとおりに備えられている神の安息に入ろうではないか。
アルマ１２：３７
And now, my brethren, seeing that we know these things, and they are true, let us repent, and harden not our hearts, that we provoke not the Lord our God to pull down his wrath upon us in these his second commandments which he has given us; but let us enter into the rest of God, which is prepared according to his word. Alma 12:37
This scripture is from the teachings of Alma, when he and Amulek were teaching the people of Ammonihah. The people of Ammonihah were Nephites and had been taught the gospel, but had fallen into sin and wickedness.
この聖句はアルマとアミュレクがアモナイハの人々に教えていた時アルマが教えたものです。アモナイハの人々はニーファイ人でしたが罪と邪悪に陥っていました。
As he was teaching the people, a man named Zeezrom, a skilled lawyer, began to challenge Alma and Amulek. Zeezrom tried to trick them into denying God by offering them money. But Alma and Amulek bore powerful testimonies of the truthfulness of the gospel. By the power of the Holy Ghost, they were able to teach with such spiritual strength that Zeezrom was silenced.
彼が教えていた時、ゼーズロムという腕のいい律法学者がアルマとアミュレクに挑戦し始めました。ゼーズロムはお金で買収して神を否定するよう企てて彼らを陥れようとしました。しかしアルマとアミュレクは福音の真実性を力強く証し、聖霊の力によって彼らはゼーズロムを黙らせることが出来たのです。
When Alma saw that Zeezrom had been silenced, Alma began to teach the people more principles of the gospel.
アルマはゼーズロムが黙ったのを見ると、続けて人々に福音の原則を教えました。
Alma taught them that “our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us…and our thoughts will condemn us” (verse 14). He taught them that everyone will have to stand before God at the Judgement Day. Those who have kept the commandments of the Lord will receive mercy and will be saved by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
アルマは「わたしたちの言葉がわたしたちを罪に定め、まことに、行ないもすべてわたしたちを罪に定め、、、わたしたちの思いもわたしたちを罪に定める」（14節）と彼らに教えました。全ての者は裁きの日に神のみ前に立たねばならないと人々に教えました。主の戒めを守った者は憐れみや恵みを受けて主イエス・キリストへの信仰によって救われるのです。
Those who have rejected the gospel will die a spiritual death and be cut off from the presence of the Lord. Alma says their torments will be like a lake of fire and brimstone. They will suffer this torment because they will know that they had an opportunity to repent while in this life, but they, of their own free will and choice, rejected the gospel.
また福音を拒んだ者は霊の死を受け主のみ前から断ち切られるのです。アルマは彼らの受ける苦痛は火と硫黄の池のようであると述べています。彼らがそんな苦痛を受けるのはこの世で悔い改める機会があったことを知っていたのに自分の自由意思と選択により福音を拒んだことによるのです。
Alma also taught them how the message of the gospel was first delivered to Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve then taught the principles of the gospel to their posterity.
アルマは更に福音がどのようにアダムとイブに伝えられたのか教えました。アダムとイブはその福音の原則を自分の子孫にも教えたのです。
Alma reminded the people in Ammonihah that God had given commandments to his children. Those who obey the commandments will receive all the promised blessings. Those who choose to reject the gospel and to disobey the commandments will not receive those blessings.
アルマはアモナイハの人々に神がその子供たちに戒めを与えられた事を忘れないよう教えました。その戒めに従う者は約束されたすべての祝福を受けるのです。福音を拒み戒めに従わない者は当然それらの祝福は受けられません。
As Alma taught the people, he explained to them that every blessing we receive is based upon our faith in God and in his Son, Jesus Christ.
アルマは私たちが受けるすべての祝福は神と御子イエスキリストへの信仰によると説いています。
We all make mistakes. We all commit sin. We all are unworthy to be in the presence of God.
私たちは誰でも間違いを犯します。罪も犯します。ですから誰も神のみ前にふさわしくないのです。
But through the great Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can repent. We can be forgiven. We can become clean.
しかしイエス・キリストの偉大な贖いにより私たちは悔い改めが出来ます。赦され、清くなれるのです。
In this scripture, Alma summarizes his message by testifying to the people that the gospel is true. He testifies that “we know these things, and they are true”.
この聖句でアルマは福音は真実であると人々に証して締めくくっています。彼は「これらのことを知っており、これはほんとうのことである」と証しています。
Like Alma, we also know these things, meaning we know the gospel. Since we also know that these things are still true, we need to follow the counsel of Alma and “repent and harden not our hearts”.
アルマのように私たちもこれらのこと、つまり福音を知っています。そしてそれが真実であると知っているので私たちはアルマの勧告に従い「悔い改めて心をかたくなにしないように」しなければなりません。
If we obey the words of Alma, he promises us that we will be able to “enter into the rest of God”. In other words, we will be able to live with our Heavenly Father once again.
もしアルマの言葉に従えば私たちは「神の安息に入る」とアルマは約束しています。言い換えれば私たちは再び神とともに住むことができるのです。
Could there be any greater blessing than that?
これ以上の祝福があるでしょうか？
Let’s remember the words of Alma as we go through this week. Let’s remember that we do know these things. Let’s remember that they are true. Let’s be worthy to enter into the rest of God and enjoy all the blessings promised to those who obey the commandments.
アルマの言葉を忘れないように今週を過ごしましょう。これらの事を私たちが知っていることを、またそれらが真実であることを覚えていましょう。神の安息に入り戒めに従う者に約束された祝福を楽しめるようふさわしくいましょう。
