それゆえ、忠実でありなさい。わたしがあなたを任命した職において努めなさい。弱い者を助け、垂れている手を上げ、弱くなったひざを強めなさい。教義と聖約８１：５

Wherefore, be faithful; stand in the office which I have appointed unto you; succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.  Doctrine & Covenants 81:5

This scripture was given by the Lord to the Prophet Joseph Smith, when he was instructed to organize the First Presidency of the Church for the first time.  This scripture contains the instructions from the Lord to the First Presidency about their assignment and responsibility.  

この聖句はジョセフスミスが大管長会を初めて組織するよう命じられた時に主から受けたものです。この聖句には主が大管長会に宛てた彼らの任務と責任が含まれています。

As members of the Lord’s Church, we have the same assignment and responsibility.

私たちも主の教会の会員として同じ任務と責任を持っています。

One of the important things about the Lord’s Church is that every member is expected to fulfill their assignments.  In most churches, there is a minister or priest who is paid money.  The minister or priest is expected to do everything.  The members of those churches have no assignments or responsibilities.  

主の教会においてひとつ重要なことは、全ての会員が自らの任務を果たすよう期待されていることです。殆どの教会では有職者としての牧師や神父、祭司がいます。彼らは教会のすべての行事を行うよう求められています。それらの教会の会員には任務や責任は通常ありません。

They are much like the Zoramites described in Alma 31.  We are told that the Zoramites went to church each Sunday, but did nothing the rest of the week (Alma 31:23).

彼らはアルマ書31章23節にあるゾーラム人にとても似ています。ゾーラム人は毎週、日曜日には教会に集っていましたが週の他の日には何もしなかったと言われています。

In the Lord’s Church, we all have assignments.  We all have responsibilities.  We all have duties.

主の教会ではすべての会員には務めがあります。私たちは皆、責任を持っています。私たちには職務があります。

Some of these duties are given to us as a “calling”.  The calling may be to teach a Primary class, or to serve on a Relief Society committee, or to be a home teacher, or to work in the library, or to help with the music.  

職務の幾つかは『召し』として私たちに与えられます。その召しは初等協会で教えたり、扶助協会の各委員会で奉仕したり、ホームティーチャーやライブラリーで働いたり、音楽の担当だったりします。

We all have callings and every calling is important.  There are no unimportant callings.  If we serve faithfully as a Primary teacher, that is just as important to the Lord as if we were the Bishop.  It is not the calling that is important, but how well we serve that is important.

私たちは皆、召しがあり、そのどの召しも大切なものです。どうでもいいような召しなどありません。もし初等教会の教師として忠実に働くなら、それは主にとって私たちがビショップであるのと同じように重要なことなのです。重要なのは召しではなく、私たちがどれほどよく働くかなのです。

However, in addition to our callings, we all have general assignments and responsibilities as members of the Lord’s Church.  This scripture teaches us about those general responsibilities.

しかし私たちの召しに加えて、主の教会の会員として私たちにはさまざまな務めや責任があります。この聖句はこうした教会内での一般的な責任について教えています。

Each of us has the responsibility to help others.  We are told in the scripture that we are to “succor the weak”.  “Succor” is an old English word that is not used much anymore that means to help.  We are told to “lift up the hands that hang down” and to “strengthen the feeble knees”.

私たちには他の誰かを助けるという責任があります。私たちは「弱いものを助ける」ようにと、この聖句で教えられています。英語の「succor」という言葉は今ではあまり使われない古い英語の言葉で、「援助、救助する」と言う意味です。私たちは「垂れている手を上げ、弱くなったひざを強めなさい」と教えられています。

This means that we are to serve others and to help those who are struggling with problems.  It doesn’t matter whether the problems are health problems, or employment problems, or spiritual problems, or family problems.  Our assignment is to help them.  

これは他の誰かに仕え問題を抱え、苦しんでいる人を助けると言う意味です。健康の問題や雇用の問題、霊的な問題、家族の問題などそれが何であっても関係ありません。私たちの務めは彼らを助けることです。

This is a commandment given to us by the Lord.  We are to be his “hands” here on earth to help his sons and his daughters.  Unlike our “callings” we will never be released from this assignment.  It is our duty.

これは主が私たちに与えられた戒めです。私たちはこの地上で主の「手」となり主の息子、娘を助けねばなりません。召しとは異なり私たちはこの任務から解任されることはありません。それは私たちの義務または職務なのです。

Let’s go forward this week and look for opportunities to serve others.  Let’s do a better job of “succoring the weak”.  Let’s help to “lift up the hands that hang down”.  Let’s “strengthen the feeble knees”.  

今週も前に向かって進みましょう、そして他の誰かに仕える機会を探しましょう。より効果的に「弱い者を助け」ましょう。「垂れている手を上げ」る手助けをしましょう。「弱くなったひざを強め」ましょう。

Sometimes those “feeble knees” are our own knees.  We need to have more faith.  We need to be more willing to listen to the promptings of the Spirit.  Even more importantly, we need to have the courage to act and to follow those promptings.

「弱くなったひざ」は時として自分自身のひざであることがあります。私たちはもっと信仰を持ち、霊のささやきにもっと耳を傾けねばなりません。そして更に重要なのは私たちはそのささやきに従い、行動する勇気を持つことです。

I know that we will be greatly blessed as we follow the instructions given to us in this scripture.  I know that we will be able to help those who are in need of help.  I know that we will be able to be the “hands of the Lord” in caring for his children.  I know that this will bring happiness to us.

この聖句の教えに従うことで私たちは大きな祝福を受けることを私は知っています。助けを必要とする誰かに救いの手を貸すことが出来ると私は知っています。主の子供たちを気遣い、世話をする「主の手」に私たちがなれると知っています。私はこれが私たちに幸福をもたらしてくれることを知っています。
