さて、わたしモロナイはこれらのことについて少々述べたい。信仰とは待ち望んでいながらまだ見ていないものであることを、世の人々に示したい。あなたがたは、自分が見ていないからということで疑ってはならない。信仰が試されてからでなければ、証は得られないからである。エテル１２：６

And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.  Ether 12:6

As we begin a new year, this is a good time to review our progress in the gospel.  One of the most basic principles of the gospel is faith.  Faith is the foundation of all that we do and all that we believe.

新年を迎えましたが、自分が福音の中でどれほど進歩したのか見直すのによい時期です。福音の最も基本的な原則のひとつは信仰です。信仰は私たちの行いと信じることすべての基盤なのです。

When we talk about faith, there are two great scriptures that come to mind.  One is Alma 32:21.  The second one is this scripture given by Moroni in the Book of Ether.  Both of these important scriptures teach us about faith.

信仰について語るとき二つの素晴らしい聖句が頭に浮かびます。一つはアルマ書32:21 で、もうひとつはエテル書の中でモロナイによって与えられた聖句です。これらの重要な聖句は共に信仰について教えています。

The Book of Mormon is given to us to help us increase our faith.  

私たちの信仰が増すようにモルモン書は私たちに与えられています。

We cannot prove that the Book of Mormon is true by using historical evidence.  We cannot prove the Book of Mormon is true using physical evidence.  We cannot prove the Book of Mormon is true using archeological evidence.

私たちは歴史的な根拠によってモルモン書が真実だと証明することはできません。物理的な根拠を使ってモルモン書が真実だと証明することはできませんし、考古学的な根拠によってモルモン書が真実だと証明することもできません。

The way we know that the Book of Mormon is true is by following the instructions given by Moroni in Moroni 10:4.  We must read the Book of Mormon.  We must ponder what we read.  We must pray with real intent to know if it is true.  

私たちはモルモン書が真実だとわかるのはモロナイ書10:4 でモロナイが残した約束に従うことによるからです。私たちは読んだ事がらを熟考しなければなりません。そしてそれが真実かどうか誠心誠意祈り尋ねなければなりません。

If we do these things with faith, we will receive the knowledge that the Book of Mormon is the word of God by the power of the Holy Ghost.

もし信仰を持ってそうするならば、私たちは聖霊の力によってモルモン書が神のみ言葉であるという知識を受けるのです。

There are some people who don’t want to do that.  They want to see historical evidence.  They want to see physical evidence.  They want to see archeological evidence.

中にはそのようなことはしたくないと思っている人がいます。彼らは歴史的な証拠を求めます。物質的な証拠や考古学的な証拠を求めます。

But even if they found a gold plate, written in reformed Egyptian, that said “Welcome to Zarahemla!  signed, king Benjamin”, they would still not believe in the Book of Mormon.

しかし彼らがたとえ変形エジプト文字で書かれた金版を見たとしても、そしてそこに「ベニヤミン王の筆跡によりゼラヘムラにようこそ」と書かれていても、彼らはそれでもモルモン書を信じないでしょう。

As Moroni teaches us, faith is “things which are hoped for and not seen”.  We are expected to develop our faith during this life.  We are expected to learn about true principles, then use our faith to find out if they are really true.

モロナイが教えるように信仰は「待ち望んでいながらまだ見ていないもの」なのです。私たちはこの世で信仰を育てることを求められています。私たちは真理の原則について学び、そして自分自身の信仰を使ってそれが真実かどうか知ることを求められています。

The Book of Mormon is a great tool to help us increase our faith.

モルモン書はすばらしい道具であり、私たちの信仰が増す手助けをしてくれます。

If you have not read the entire Book of Mormon recently, the start of a new year is a good time to read it again.  If you have read the entire Book of Mormon completely recently, the start of the new year is a good time to read it again!

もしモルモン書を長い間読み通していないなら、年初めは読み直すのによい機会です。もしモルモン書を読み通したばかりでも、年初めはまた読み直すのによい機会です。

I promise you that as you read the Book of Mormon, your faith will increase.  As you read the Book of Mormon, you will receive greater spiritual blessings.  As you read the Book of Mormon, you will find greater peace in your lives.

モルモン書を読めばあなたの信仰が増すことを私は約束します。モルモン書を読めばあなたは素晴らしい霊的な祝福を受けるでしょう。モルモン書を読めばあなたの人生で素晴らしい平安を見出すでしょう。

I know that these things are true.  I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God.  I know that it is a tool to help us increase our faith.

私はこれらが真実だと知っています。モルモン書が神のみ言葉であると知っています。これは私たちが信仰を増すように与えられた道具であると知っています。

Let’s all start reading the Book of Mormon this week.  Even if it takes us a whole year to finish reading it, that is okay.  The important thing is not how fast we read it, but simply that we read it.  Even reading a few pages every day will bring great blessings into our lives.

今週モルモン書を読み始めましょう。たとえ読み終えるのに一年かかるとしても大丈夫です。大切なのはどれだけ早く読むということではなく、読むということなのです。たとえ毎日２，３ページ読むだけでも私たちの生活に偉大な祝福をもたらしてくれるでしょう。
