御霊みずから、わたしたちの御霊と共に、わたしたちが神の子であることをあかしして下さる。もし子であれば、相続人でもある。神の相続人であって、キリストと栄光を共にするために苦難をも共にしている以上、キリストと共同の相続人である。わたしは思う。今のこの時の苦しみは、やがてわたしたちに現されようとする栄光に比べると、言うに足りない。ローマ人への手紙８：１６－１８
The Spirit beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Romans 8:16-18
In this scripture, Paul reminds us of our eternal destiny. He reminds us that we are children of our Heavenly Father. He reminds us that we have a glorious eternal reward waiting if we endure to the end.
この聖句でパウロは私たちに永遠の行く末を忘れないよう説いています。彼は私たちが天父の子供である事を思い起こさせています。また私たちが最後まで耐え忍べば輝かしい永遠の報いが待っていることを思い起こさせています。
First, Paul teaches us that “the Spirit beareth witness, that we are the children of God”. This means that the Holy Ghost testifies to each one of us, to our own spirit, that we are eternal beings, children of an eternal God.
まず、パウロは「御霊みずから私たちが神の子であることを証して下さる」と教えています。それは聖霊が私たち一人一人に直接、私たちが永遠の存在であり永遠の神の子供であることを自身の霊に証してくれると言うことです。
And, if we are children, then we have the possibility of inheriting all that our Father has.
また、私たちが神の子であるなら、天父が持っておられるすべてを受け継ぐ可能性もあるのです。
This is made possible through the great Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ.
これは私たちの救い主イエス・キリストの偉大な贖罪により可能となるのです。
It is only through the power of the atonement that we can repent. It is only through the power of the atonement that we can again become clean. It is only through the atonement that we can return to live with our Heavenly Father.
贖いの力によってのみ私たちは悔い改めることが出来、贖いの力によってのみ私たちは再び清くなれるのです。贖いによってのみ私たちは天父の元に帰り共に住めるのです。
But there are some requirements that we must fulfil if we are to be “joint-heirs with Christ”.
しかし「キリストと共同の相続人」となるためには成就しなければならない幾つかの必要条件があります。
Paul teaches us that we must “suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together”.
パウロは私たちに「キリストと栄光を共にするために苦難をも共に」しなければならないと教えています。
What does that mean?
それはどういう意味でしょう？
It means that we must love Jesus Christ and keep his commandments.
それはイエス・キリストを愛し、戒めを守らねばならないと言うことです。
When we keep the commandments, we sometimes “suffer”. We sometimes “suffer” persecution from those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. We sometimes “suffer” being ridiculed or laughed at.
戒めを守るとき、私たちは時折「苦しむ」ことがあります。イエス・キリストを信じない人から迫害を受け「苦しむ」ことがあります。あざけられたり、笑われたりして「苦しむ」こともあります。
But it is through “suffering” that we draw closer to our Savior. It is through “suffering” that our testimonies of Jesus Christ are strengthened. It is through “suffering” that we become more like Jesus Christ.
しかし、私たちは「苦しみ」を通ることで救い主に近づくのです。「苦しみ」によって私たちはイエス・キリストへの証が強められます。「苦しみ」によって私たちはよりイエス・キリストに似たものとなれるのです。
It is not always easy to keep the commandments. Satan places many temptations in our path. He wants us to make bad choices. He tries to trick us. He wants us to be unhappy.
戒めを守るのはいつも容易とは言えません。サタンは私たちの行く先に多くの誘惑を置いていきます。私たちが間違った選択をするよう望み、私たちを騙そうとしたり、私たちに不幸になって欲しいと願っています。
Paul teaches us that our “suffering” in this life is nothing when compared with the “glory which shall be revealed”. We have been promised that, if we endure to the end, we will inherit “all that the Father has”.
パウロはこの世の「苦しみ」は「やがてわたしたちに現されようとする栄光」に比べれば何でもないと教えています。もし私たちが最後まで耐え忍ぶならば「天父の持つすべて」を相続すると私たちは約束を受けています。
The greatest “glory” of all is to be able to return and live again with our Heavenly Father and with our own families eternally. That is what we all want. That is what we can all receive. That is the “glory” that is made possible through the atonement of our Savior.
すべての中で最も偉大な「栄光」は天父のもとに帰り天父や私たちの家族と再び共に暮らすことです。私たちはみなそれを望んでいます。私たちはみなそれを受ける事ができるのです。そしてそれが救い主の贖罪により可能となる「栄光」なのです。
This life is a time of trial and testing. We all have “suffering” in this life. No one is exempt. But the knowledge of our eternal potential helps us through the “suffering” of this life. We know what great blessing await those who keep the commandments and who endure to the end.
この世は試しの時期です。私たちは皆この世で「苦しみ」を経験します。誰一人免除されることはありません。しかし私たちの持つ永遠の可能性を知ることはこの世の「苦しみ」を通り抜ける上で助けとなります。私たちはすばらしい祝福が、戒めを守り最後まで耐え忍ぶ者を待っていることを知っています。
Let’s remember who we are, children of our Heavenly Father. Let’s remember what he has promised to give us, if we keep the commandments. Let’s remember that the “suffering” in this life is to help us become more like our Savior.
私たちが何者なのか、つまり天父の子供であることを忘れないようにしましょう。戒めを守るものに天父が何を約束されているか忘れないようにしましょう。この世の「苦しみ」は私たちがより救い主のようになれる助けになることを忘れないようにしましょう。
I know that, as we do these things, we will receive all the promised blessing, both in this life and in the eternal world to come.
それらを行なうと私たちはこの世と来るべき永遠の世界において約束されたすべての祝福を享受できることを知っています。
