He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the Prophet Isaiah.  John 1:23

ヨハネの著書では、預言者バプテスマのヨハネについて、そして救い主が地上での業を行う道を備える重要な役割について学びます。バプテスマのヨハネの役割は、イエス・キリストが教えた福音のメッセージを人々が受け入れる準備をすることでした。

In the writings of John, we learn about the prophet John the Baptist and his important role in preparing the way for the earthly ministry of the Savior.  The role of John the Baptist was to prepare the people to receive the message of the gospel, as taught by Jesus Christ.

より重要な役割は、ヨハネが救い主にバプテスマを施すことでした。預言者ニーファイにこの重要な神権の務めが示されました。「主が私に示されたあの預言者が、神の小羊にバプテスマを施す」のを見ました。

Even more importantly, John was assigned to baptize the Savior.  This important priesthood assignment was shown to the prophet Nephi, who saw “that prophet which the Lord showed unto me, that should baptize the Lamb of God”. 

ヨハネは自分の務めを熱心に遂行しました。彼は自分には救い主にバプテスマを施す資格はないと考えていました。救い主は自分よりもはるかに義にかなっていると主張しました。しかし救い主はバプテスマを受ける必要性をご存じでしたので、ヨハネを説得しバプテスマを施すように求めました。

John was diligent in fulfilling his assignments.  He did not think he was worthy to baptize the Savior.  He protested that the Savior was much more righteous than he was.  But the Savior understood the necessity of being baptized.  He re-assured John that it was okay and asked that John baptize him.  

まったく罪のない救い主がバプテスマを受ける必要があったのは、私たちには不思議に思えるかもしれません。救い主には、悔い改めて、赦されるべき罪はありませんでした。しかし、ニーファイが教えているように、救い主でさえバプテスマを受ける必要があるのなら、私たちはそれ以上に受ける必要があります。主はすべての戒めに従うことによって、模範を私たちに示してくださいました。

It may seem strange to us that the Savior, a totally sinless man, needed to be baptized.  He had no sins to repent of or to be forgiven for.  But, as Nephi teaches us, if even the Savior needed to be baptized, how much more need to we have to be baptized.  The Lord set the example for all of us by being obedient to all the commandments.

救い主にバプテスマを施した後，ヨハネはイエスがキリストであり，約束されたメシアであることを証しました。彼は大胆に証をし、彼のもとに来るすべての人に救い主について教えました。バプテスマを受けたわたしたちも，イエス・キリストについての証を他の人に伝えるという同様の義務を負っています。

After baptizing the Savior, John testified that Jesus was the Christ, the promised Messiah.  He was bold in his testimony, teaching everyone who came to him about the Savior.  We who have been baptized have a similar duty to share our testimony of Jesus Christ with others.

ヨハネは救い主にバプテスマを施した後も伝道を続けました。彼は人々に説教し、教え続けました。権力者を恐れず、権威を持って教えました。違法な結婚のためにヘロデを非難しました。ヘロデは怒ってヨハネを牢に入れました。牢にいる間、彼は死刑を宣告され、ヘロデの命令によって処刑されました（このヘロデは、賢者が見に来たヘロデと同じではありません。彼の本名はアンティパスでしたが、彼はしばしばヘロデと呼ばれていました）。

John continued his mission after baptizing the Savior.  He continued preaching and teaching the people.  He did not fear the powerful people, but taught with authority.  He chastised Herod for an unlawful marriage.  Herod was angry and put John in prison.  While in prison, he was condemned to death and executed by the order of Herod (this Herod was not the same Herod who the wise men came to see.  His real name was Antipas, but he was often called Herod).  

ヨハネには他にも多くの重要な神権の任務がありました。彼はアロン神権を地上に回復する任務を与えられた神権者でした。預言者ジョセフ・スミスとオリバー・カウドリのところに来て、彼らにアロン神権を授けました。その後、彼らは互いにバプテスマを授けるように指示されました。地上で再びバプテスマの儀式を執行する権能により、回復という偉大な業が始まりました。

John had many other important priesthood assignments.  He was the priesthood holder who was given the assignment to restore the Aaronic Priesthood to the earth. He came to the prophet Joseph Smith and to Oliver Cowdery and conferred upon them the Aaronic Priesthood.  They were then instructed to baptize each other.  With the authority to perform the ordinance of baptism once again upon the earth, the great work of the Restoration could begin.

新約聖書の学習を始めるにあたり、ヨハネが成し遂げた偉業について考えてみましょう。イエス・キリストに対する彼の証について考えてみましょう。彼が務めを果たすために受けた苦しみを考えてみましょう。 イエス・キリストの福音は、私たちが地上で過ごす間だけのものではありません。 福音は永遠です。現世で最善を尽くして奉仕し、いつの日か私たちが与えられるであろう務めに備えましょう。

As we begin out study of the New Testament, let’s consider the great things accomplished by John.  Let’s remember his testimony of Jesus Christ.  Let’s remember his sufferings for fulfilling his assignments properly.  Let’s also remember that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not just for the time we spend on the earth.  The gospel is eternal.  Let’s do our best to serve while we are here and prepare ourselves for the assignments that may come to us in the future.
