したがって、おお、わが子よ、来たいと思う者はだれでも来て、価なしに命の水を飲むことができる。また、来たいと思わない者はだれでも来るように強いられない。しかしその者は、終わりの日にその行いに応じて回復を受ける。アルマ書４２：２７
Therefore, O my son, whosoever will come may come and partake of the waters of life freely; and whosoever will not come the same is not compelled to come; but in the last day it shall be restored unto him according to his deeds. Alma 42:27
In this short scripture, Alma teaches an important lesson to his son Corianton. We can learn much from this same lesson.
この短い聖句でアルマは息子コリアントンに大切なレッスンを教えています。私たちもここから多くを学ぶことが出来ます。
Alma reminds us that the most fundamental principle in this life is free agency.
アルマはこの世で最も基本的な原則は自由意志であることを私たちに思い起こさせています。
Heavenly Father has given free agency to every one of his children. As much as he loves us and wants us all to return to him, he will never force anyone to make right choices.
天父は天父の子供一人一人に自由意志を与えてくださいました。天父は私たちを愛し、天父のみもとに戻って欲しいと強く望んでおられますが、私たちに正しい選択をすることを強制されることはありません。
Each day, as we are faced with decisions, we have the opportunity to choose the right. Most of these decisions will be about small things. Sometimes, the decisions are about big things. But big or small, we have the freedom to make our own choice.
私たちは毎日何かを決定する場面に出会い、正しい選択をする機会があります。その殆どは小さな選択ですが、時には大きな選択に遭遇することもあります。しかし問題の大小に関わらず私たちには自分自身で選択する自由意志を授かっています。
Because of Heavenly Father’s great love for his children, everyone has an opportunity to learn about the commandments. Everyone has an opportunity to choose to follow Jesus Christ. Everyone has an opportunity to decide for themselves what they want to do.
私たちを思う天父の愛はとても大きいものです。ですから戒めを学ぶ機会が誰にでも与えられています。イエス・キリストに従う選択をする機会が誰にでも与えられています。したい事を自分自身で決める機会が誰にでも与えられています。
No one is told that they are too poor, or that they are too old, or that they have made too many mistakes. Alma teaches us that anyone who wants to repent “may come and partake of the waters of life freely”.
誰一人として貧しすぎるとか歳をとりすぎている、過ちを犯しすぎていると言う理由で除外されていません。アルマは誰でも罪を悔い改めたければ「来て、価なしに命の水を飲める」と教えています。
Without the principle of free agency, this life would not be a true test. If we are forced to make decisions without any choice, there could be no punishment.
自由意思の原則が無ければこの人生が真の試しにはなり得ません。もし選択の余地なく決断を強要されるなら、罰もまたあり得ないのです。
But, since we do have free agency, we will receive a reward or a punishment based on what we chose to do. Because of free agency, we will be judged on our own individual decisions. The reward or punishment we receive will be fair. As Alma teaches us, we will receive “according to our deeds”.
しかし私たちには自由意思があるので自身の選択に応じて報いや罰を受けるのです。自由意思がある故に自分自身で決める事がらについて裁かれるのです。ですから私たちが受ける良い報いや罰は公平なものなのです。アルマが教えるように私たちは「その行いに応じて」結果を受けるのです。
It is only because of the principle of free agency that repentance is possible. We have all made bad choices and have sinned. We can now choose to repent of those bad choices and be clean once again.
自由意思の原則によってのみ悔い改めが可能なのです。私たちは誰でも間違った選択をしたり罪を犯しています。私たちは過去の悪い選択を悔い改めて再び清くなれるのです。
We all have friends or family members how have or who are making poor choices. We love them and want to help them. It is hard to watch those we love make poor choices. We know that they will have to pay for those mistakes someday.
私たちの家族や友人の中には過去に、また現在良くない選択をしている人がいます。私たちは彼らを愛してますし助けてあげたいと思っています。愛する誰かが過ちを犯すのを見るのは辛い事です。私たちは彼らがいつの日かその過ちの代価を払うことになるのを知っています。
We pray for them. We love them. We encourage them. We want them to repent and to be happy. But we cannot force our choices on them. They have the right to choose their own path. We can never give up on them, but we cannot force them to change.
私たちは彼らを愛し、励まします。彼らのために祈ります。彼らが悔い改めて幸せになって欲しいと思っています。けれども彼らに私たちの選択を押し付ける事は出来ません。彼らには自分の道を選ぶ権利があります。彼らの事を決して諦める事は出来ませんが、彼らが変わるよう強制する事も出来ません。
As we begin this new year, let us resolve to “partake of the waters of life freely”. Let us resolve to use our free agency to make right choices. Let us resolve to repent of those poor choices that we have made in the past.
この新年の初めに「価なしに命の水を飲む」ことを決意しましょう。正しい選択をするために与えられている自由意志を使うと決意しましょう。過去に犯した間違った選択を悔い改めると決意しましょう。
Let’s resolve to follow our Lord Jesus Christ and to keep his commandments for the entire year. Let’s make this new year the best year of our life!
１年を通して主イエス・キリストに従い、主の戒めに従うと決意しましょう。この新しい年を今までで一番良い年にしてみましょう。
