しかし、神が神でなくなることはなく、憐れみは悔い改める者について権利を主張する。憐れみは贖罪によって与えられるのである。そして、贖罪は死者の復活をもたらし、死者の復活は人を神の御前に連れ戻す。このようにして、人は神の御前に連れ戻され、律法と正義により、自分の行いに応じて裁かれる。アルマ４２：２３

But God ceaseth not to be God, and mercy claimeth the penitent, and mercy cometh because of the atonement; and the atonement bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead; and the resurrection of the dead bringeth back men into the presence of God; and thus they are restored into his presence, to be judged according to their works, according to the law and justice.  Alma 42:23

In this scripture, Alma explains in simple words how the great Plan of Happiness works.  There are no exceptions, no “maybes”, no “possibilities”. Alma teaches us with power and authority what will happen to each of us in the future.

この聖句でアルマは簡単な言葉で、大いなる幸福の計画がどのように機能するか説明しています。例外や、「たぶん」、「ありうる」などの不確かなものではありません。アルマは私たち一人一人に将来何が起こるかを力と権能を持って教えています。

In the verses immediately before this one, Alma is teaching his son Corianton that everyone has the opportunity to make choices in this life.  Based on those choices, we will receive a reward or punishment.  

このすぐ前にある聖句では、アルマは息子コリアントンに誰もがこの世で選択する機会がある事を教えています。私たちはそれらの選択に基づいて報いまた罰を受けとります。

Alma teaches us that, although we all make many mistakes, it is possible to repent.  He says that “mercy claimeth the penitent”. In other words, those who sincerely repent of their sins will have those sins forgiven.  

アルマは、私たちは多くの間違いを犯しますが、悔い改めることができると教えています。彼は「憐れみは悔い改める者について権利を主張する」と述べています。つまり心から悔い改める者はその罪を赦されると言うことです。

How is this possible?

どうしてそんなことが可能なのでしょう？

It is possible because of the great Atonement of Jesus Christ.  As Alma teaches, “mercy cometh because of the Atonement”. All blessings in this life, all joy and happiness in this life, and all joy and happiness in the eternities come because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  The Atonement of Jesus Christ is what makes all things possible.

それはイエス・キリストの偉大な贖罪があるので可能になるのです。アルマが教えているように「憐れみは贖罪によって与えられる」のです。この人生でのすべての祝福、この人生での喜びと幸福、そして永遠にわたる喜びと幸福は、イエス・キリストの贖罪によってもたらされます。

For example, as Alma says to his son, it is the Atonement that brings the resurrection of the dead.  Jesus Christ was the first to be resurrected. After that, many of the saints were also resurrected. And just as surely as we will each die, we will also each be resurrected.  We will have our bodies joined eternally with our spirits, never again to be separated.

たとえばアルマが息子に教えるように、贖いが死者の復活をもたらします。イエス・キリストは最初に復活されました。その後、多くの聖徒らも復活しました。そして私たちの誰もが死ぬのと同じくらいに、誰もが復活するのです。私たちの肉体は霊と永遠に結びつき、二度と離れることはありません。

After we are resurrected, then what happens?

私たちが復活した後、何が起こるのでしょう？

As Alma teaches us, the resurrection brings us back into the presence of God.  There we will be judged according to our deeds and actions in this mortal life.  If our deeds and actions have been good, and if we have sincerely repented of our sins, we will receive eternal happiness.  If our deeds and actions have not been good, if we have not repented, we will receive eternal unhappiness. This is based on eternal law and justice.  

アルマが教えるように、復活は私たちを再び神のみもとに連れ戻します。そこで私たちはこの死すべき現世での行いと行動に従って裁かれます。もし私たちの行いと行動が良く、そして私たちが心から自分の罪を悔い改めるならば、私たちは永遠の幸福を受けます。もし私たちの行ないや行動が良くなく、心から自分の罪を悔い改めないならば、私たちは永遠の不幸を受けます。これは永遠の律法と正義に基づいています。

Whether we believe this or not does not change the fact that it is true.  A loving Heavenly Father has sent messengers to us to teach us this truth.  Those who are humble and willing to receive the messages will be blessed. Those who reject the messages and do not believe what has been taught by prophets and apostles will be very sad.

私たちがこれを信じるか否かにかかわらず、その真理の事実は変わることがありません。愛ある天の御父はこの真理を教えるために使者を遣わしてくださいました。謙遜でこのメッセージを喜んで受け入れる者は祝福されるでしょう。このメッセージを拒み、預言者と使徒が教えられることを信じない者はとても悲しむことでしょう。

As we start this new year, let’s remember the reality of eternal life.  Let’s remember that we will all be resurrected someday. Let’s remember that we will all stand in the presence of God to be judged of our deeds during this short mortal life.  Let’s remember the great Atonement of Jesus Christ that allows us to repent of our sins. Let’s be among those penitent that mercy will claim.

新年を迎えるにあたり永遠の命の現実を覚えて過ごしましょう。いつか私たちは皆復活することを覚えていましょう。この短い死すべき世で私たちは皆神のみ前に立ち、行ないや行動を裁かれることを覚えていましょう。私たちの罪の悔い改めを可能にしてくれるイエス・キリストの偉大な贖いを覚えていましょう。憐れみを主張できる悔い改める仲間になりましょう。
