見よ、主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、わたしは預言者エリヤの手によってあなたがたに神権を現そう。彼は先祖に与えられた約束を子孫の心に植え、子孫のこころはその先祖に向かうであろう。そうでなければ、主の来臨の時に、全地はことごとく荒廃するであろう。教義と聖約２：１－３
Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming. D&C 2:1-3
This scripture is very important. It is the very first revelation given in this Dispensation. It is the only scripture that is contained in all four Standard Works.
これは今の神権時代に与えられた最初の啓示でしかも４標準聖典の全てに含まれる唯一の聖句でもあります。ですからとても重要な聖句です。
We have a great work to accomplish while in this life. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that “the greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead.” We have a duty to find our ancestors and to make sure they have the opportunity to receive all the ordinances of the Gospel.
私達はこの世で成し遂げねばならない偉大な業があります。予言者ジョセフスミスはこのように教えています。「わたしたちがこの世で神から受けている最も大きな責任は，死者を探し求めることです」我々には先祖を探しだす責任があります。そして福音の全ての儀式を受ける機会を用意してあげなければなりません。
Just like us, they must each be baptized and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. And just like us, they must receive all the blessings of the Temple.
我々のように彼らも皆バプテスマを受け聖霊の賜物を受けねばなりません。そして我々のように神殿の全ての祝福を受けねばなりません。
It is not fair if they do not get to have these blessings, just because they lived in a time when the Gospel was not available to them. They are God’s children, just like us. God loves them just as he loves us. They are waiting, sometimes for hundreds of years, for us to do what we promised we would do.
彼らが単に福音が無い時代に住んでいたという理由でこれらの祝福を受けれないのは公平ではありません。彼らも私たちと同じように「神の子」なのです。神様が私たちを愛されているのと同じように彼らをも愛しておられるのです。彼らは私たちがすると約束したことを幾百年という間待っているのです。
The first step is to find your ancestors. Start with your own family records (戸籍謄本). Learn how to enter their information into FamilySearch. The program in available at no cost on the Church website. It is also available at the Family History Center in your Stake. The people at the Family History Center will be happy to help you learn how to enter your family names.
最初のステップは先祖を探すことです。自分の家族の戸籍謄本から始めてください。「FamilySearch」に入手したそれらの情報を入力することを覚えてください。そのプログラムは教会のウェブサイトで無料で提供されています。他にもステークの「Family History Center」に用意されています。「Family History Center」で働く方たちは名前の入力の仕方など喜んで教えてくれます。
The next step is to take those names to the Temple and get the work done for your family members. It is important that the Temple work be done for every member of your family, as far back as you can find them.
次のステップはそれらの名前を神殿に持って行き家族メンバーの儀式を執り行うことです。見つけられる限り全ての先祖の儀式を執り行うことが大切です。
It is not our duty to decide if they are worthy. It is our duty to get the work done. They can then choose to accept the work if they want. But if we do not do our part, they will not have a chance to choose. They must remain in the spirit prison, waiting, waiting, waiting.
彼らがふさわしいかを決めるのは私たちの義務ではありません。儀式を執り行ってあげるのが私たちの義務であり、彼らが望むならばそれを受け入れることができるのです。もし私たちのすべきことをしなければ彼らはそれを選択するチャンスすら無いのです。彼らは霊の獄に閉じ込められ待ち続けるのです。
Many of us have ancestors who suffered and died during the terrible times of World War II. Our fathers, uncles, brothers, and others were required to fight, and often to die, for their country. Particularly in Japan, even those who remained at home suffered terrible trials during those days.
私たちの中には第二次世界大戦の悲惨な時代に苦しみ亡くなった先祖をお持ちの方も多くいます。私たちの父、おじ、兄弟、他、「お国のため」と飛びたち、時には死ぬことすら強要されました。特に日本では国に残った者すらその時期、悲惨な試練に苦しんだのです。
We have a sacred duty to those people. We have a responsibility to do the work for them, to free them from the darkness of the spirit prison.
私達は彼らのために神聖な勤めがあります。私達は彼らのために儀式を執り行い、霊の獄の暗黒から開放してあげる責任があります。
I know that these good people are eagerly waiting for us to do their Temple work. I know that we will meet them again some day. How happy they will be to see us again. How happy we will be to see how happy they are.
その善良な人々は私たちが彼らのために神殿での儀式を執り行うことを切望していることを知っています。私達はいつか再び彼らと会えることを知っています。彼らとの再会は何とうれしいことでしょう。彼らの幸せな様子を見ることは何と幸せなことでしょう。
As we begin this new year, may we go forward in this great work of salvation for our ancestors. There are no greater blessings in this life for us or for our ancestors. It is our duty. It is our responsibility.
新年の始まりにあたり先祖の救いのためこの偉大な業をはじめようではありませんか。私たちや先祖のためにこれ以上の祝福はこの世にはないのです。これは私たちの務めであり責任なのです。
