見よ、主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、わたしは預言者エリヤの手によってあなたがたに神権を現そう。彼は先祖に与えられた約束を子孫の心に植え、子孫のこころはその先祖に向かうであろう。そうでなければ、主の来臨の時に、全地はことごとく荒廃するであろう。教義と聖約２：１－３

Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.  And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers.  If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.  Doctrine & Covenants 2:1-3

This is a very interesting scripture for several reasons.

First, it is the very first revelation in this Dispensation recorded in the book of Doctrine & Covenants.  Even though it is in Section 2, it was given in September of 1823, during the visit of Moroni to Joseph Smith.

Second, it is the only scripture that is found in all four of the Standard Works of the Church.  It is found in the Bible, in the book of Malachi.  It is found in the Book of Mormon, in 3 Nephi.  It is found in the book of Doctrine & Covenants, in Section 2.  And it is found in the Pearl of Great Price, in Joseph Smith – History.

第二に、これは教会の4大標準聖典すべてに書かれている唯一の聖句です。聖書のマラキ書にあります。モルモン書の3ニーファイにあります。教義と聖約の2章に、そして高価なる真珠のジョセフ・スミス–歴史にもあります。

Third, it teaches us about the very purpose of this earth.  This earth was created as a place where the spirit children of Heavenly Father could come.  Here, they receive a physical body.  Here, they have an opportunity to be tried and tested.  Here, they can receive all the ordinances of the priesthood that are necessary of them to receive salvation.

第三に、これは私たちにこの地球の目的そのものについて教えています。この地球は天父の霊の子供たちが来ることができる場所として造られました。そこで、彼らは肉体を受け、試され、テストされる機会があります。そこで、彼らは救いを受けるために必要な神権のすべての儀式を受けることができます。

If the children of Heavenly Father who come to this earth do not receive all the ordinances of the priesthood, they cannot progress.  Since millions of Heavenly Father’s children have come to this earth during times when priesthood ordinances were not available, this scripture teaches us about our responsibility to serve in the temple.  

この地上に来る天父の子供たちが神権のすべての儀式を受けなければ、進歩することができません。神権の儀式が受けられなかった時期に何百万人もの天父の子供たちがこの地上に来たので、この聖句は神殿で奉仕する私たちの責任について教えています。

If we fail to find our own ancestors and to take their names to the temple, the “whole earth will be utterly wasted”.  If we fail to do our duty, those spirit children of Heavenly Father who came to earth before us will not be able to receive the ordinances of salvation.  They will not be able to receive all the blessings that they need.  They will not be able to enter into the Celestial Kingdom.  

私たちが自分の先祖を見つけられず、彼らの名前を神殿に持って行かなければ、「全地はことごとく荒廃する」ことになるでしょう。 私たちが義務を果たさなければ、私たちより前に地上に来た天父の霊の子供たちは救いの儀式を受けることができなくなります。彼らは必要なすべての祝福を受けることができなくなります。彼らは天の王国に入ることができなくなります。

It is interesting that this scripture teaches us that the Priesthood will be restored by Elijah.  

この聖句がエリヤによって神権が回復されることを教えているのは興味深いことです。

Didn’t John the Baptist restore the Aaronic Priesthood?  Didn’t Peter, James, and John, restore the Melchizedek Priesthood?  What Priesthood did Elijah restore?

On April 3, 1830, in the Kirtland Temple, the prophet Elijah appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and restored the keys of the sealing power of the Priesthood.  It is through the sealing power of the Priesthood, administered under the direction of the Prophet, that families can now be sealed together for eternity.  It is by the power of the keys restored by Elijah that we can serve as proxy for our own ancestors.  It is by the power of those keys that “the hearts of the children shall turn to the fathers”.

1830年4月3日、カートランド神殿で、預言者エリヤが預言者ジョセフ・スミスに現れ、神権の結び固めの鍵を回復しました。 預言者の指示の下で管理された神権の結び固めの権能によって、家族は永遠に結び固められるのです。私たちが自分の先祖の代理人として働くことができるのは、エリヤによって回復された鍵の権能によるものです。「子孫の心を先祖に向けさせる」のは、それらの鍵の権能によるものです。

As we begin this new year, let’s remember the great responsibility that we have to serve our own ancestors.  Let’s remember that, even though the temples are temporarily closed, we still have the responsibility to search out the names of our ancestors, so the work can be done for them as soon as the temples open again.  Let’s remember that if we fail, “the whole earth will be utterly wasted”.  Let’s do our best to carry out this sacred responsibility.

新しい年を迎えました。私たち自身の先祖に奉仕するという大きな責任がある事を心にとめてください。神殿が一時的に閉鎖されていても、私たちには先祖の名前を探す責任があることを忘れないでください。そうすれば、神殿が再び開いた時に、すぐに業を行うことができます。私たちがそれをしなければ、「全地はことごとく荒廃する」ことを忘れないでください。この神聖な責任を果たすために最善を尽くしましょう。
