それだから、あなたがたは、力の限りをつくして、あなたがたの信仰に徳を加え、徳に知識を、知識に節制を、節制に忍耐を、忍耐に信心を、信心に兄弟愛を、兄弟愛に愛を加えなさい。ペテロ第ニの手紙１：５－７

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.  2 Peter 1:5-7

This scripture is very appropriate as we begin a new year.  In this scripture, Peter teaches us about how to become more like our Savior Jesus Christ.  He teaches us about several character traits that we each need to develop in ourselves.

これは新年が始まるこの時期にふさわしい聖句です。この聖句でペテロはどうしたらより救い主イエス・キリストのようになれるのか教えています。彼は私たちが開発すべき幾つかの性格特性について教えています。

It all begins with faith.  Faith is the first principle of the gospel.  Everything we do is based upon faith.

すべては信仰から始まります。信仰は福音の第一原則です。私たちのすべての行動は信仰に基づいているのです。

Next, Peter tells us that we must learn virtue.  Virtue means that we should have pure thoughts and clean actions.  We should seek for things that are virtuous and lovely.

次にペテロは徳を身に着けるよう教えています。徳とは私たちが純粋な思いと清い行いを持っていると言うことです。私たちは徳​高い​こと、好ましい​こと​を​尋たずね​求もとめねばなりません。

Third, Peter tells us that we must gain knowledge.  The Lord has told us that “it is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance.” (D&C 131:6).  We need to study the gospel.  We need to attend our Church meetings.  We need to read the scriptures each day.

三つ目に私たちは知識を得るべきだとペテロは教えています。主は「人が無知で救われることは不可能である」（D&C131:6）と言われています。私たちは福音を学ばねばなりません。教会の集会に出席し、毎日聖典を読まねばなりません。

Next, we are told that we need to learn temperance.  This means we must learn to have self-control.  We must learn to control our emotions.  We must learn to be moderate.

そして次に私たちは節制を学ばねばなりません。それは自制心を身に付けねばならないと言うことです。私たちは感情のコントロールを身に付けねばなりません。控えめで穏やかさやを身に付けねばなりません。

After temperance, we must learn patience.  This is very similar to temperance.  Patience means waiting on the Lord.  Patience means being tolerant of the faults of others.  A patient person will not scold or criticize others.

節制の後は忍耐を身に付けねばなりません。これは節制ととても似ています。忍耐とは主を頼り待つということです。忍耐とは他人の間違いに寛容であると言うことです。忍耐強い人は他人を怒ったり非難したりしません。

Next, we must learn kindness.  A kind person is gentle and helpful with others.  A kind person is considerate of other people’s feelings.  We should be kind to everyone we meet.

次に私たちは親切心を身に付けねばなりません。親切な人は優しくて他人をよく助けます。親切な人は他人の気持ちを考えます。私たちは出会うすべての人に親切でなければなりません。

Finally, Peter tells us that we must learn to have charity.  Mormon tells us that “charity is the greatest of all”.  To be like our Savior, we must learn to have charity.  Charity is “the pure love of Christ”.  

最後に私たちは慈愛を身に付けるべきだとペテロは教えています。モルモンは「慈愛はすべての中でもっとも優れたもの」だと教えています。救い主のようであるためには私たちは慈愛を身に付けねばなりません。慈愛は「キリストの純粋の愛」なのです。

How should we do these things?  Peter tells us that we must do these things “giving all diligence”.  

どのようにすればそうできるのでしょう？私たちは「力の限りを尽くして」そうするようにペテロは教えています。

That means that we must do them with real intent.  We must do them with our best efforts.  We must want to learn how to become more like our Savior.

それは真心を持ってそうすべきだと言うことです。私たちは自分自身の最善を尽くさねばなりません。私たちはどのようにして救い主のようになれるのか知りたいと望まねばなりません。

As we begin this new year, this is a good time to set goals to improve in each of these traits.  The Lord has given us a commandment to become like him.  This will be a good place to start.

新しいこの年が始まる今は、これらの特性を改善しようと目標を立てるよい時です。主は私たちが救い主のようになれるよう戒めを与えてくださいました。ここから始めましょう。

I know that if we do our best to learn these character traits, that our lives will be happier.  We will become better people.  We will become more like our Savior.

もし私たちがこれらの性格特性を身に付けようと最善を尽くせば私たちの人生はより幸せなものになる事を私は知っています。私たちはよりよい人間になり、より救い主に近いものとなるでしょう。
