そのため、人は肉においては自由であり、人のために必要のものはすべて与えられる。そして人は、すべての人の偉大な仲保者を通じて自由と永遠の命を選ぶことも、あるいは悪魔の束縛と力に応じて束縛と死を選ぶことも自由である。悪魔はすべての人が自分のように惨めになることを求めているからである。ニーファイ第二書２：２７
Wherefore, all men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. 2 Nephi 2:27
As we start a new year, this is a good time to evaluate our lives and see how we are doing. The old year is finished and we cannot change anything about it. But now we have a brand new year, full of new opportunities and possibilities.
新年を迎えました。自分の生き方を評価し見直すよい機会ではないでしょうか。過ぎ去った古い年はもうどうすることも出来ません。しかし新たな機会と可能性に満ちた真っさらな新しい年がやってきました。
As this scripture teaches us, what we do in this life is based on our own decisions. We can choose happiness or we can choose misery.
この聖句が教えているように、私たちがこの世で行うことは全て自分自身の「選び」によるのです。幸福を選ぶことも、不幸を選ぶこともできます。
Nephi reminds us that “all things are given them which are expedient unto man”. For us, this means that we have been taught about Jesus Christ and his commandments. We have the scriptures that teach us. We have a living prophet and apostles that teach us. We have prayer, that lets us talk with Heavenly Father. We really do have all that we need.
ニーファイは「人のために必要のものはすべて与えられる」ことを私たちに思い起こさせています。それは私たちにイエス・キリストと主の戒めが教えられていることを意味します。それを教えてくれる聖典や生ける預言者、使徒がいます。天の御父とお話が出来るお祈りがあります。私たちに必要なものは間違いなく全て与えられています。
The question is, what will we do with those things we have been given?
では、与えられたこれらのものをどうすればよいでしょう？
Because of the great gift of free agency, we are all free to choose the path that we want to follow. Jesus Christ has shown us the way, but he will never force anyone to keep the commandments. We have complete freedom to choose to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. We have complete freedom to choose not to follow him.
自由意志というすばらしい贈り物のおかげで、私たちは進む道を自由に選ぶことが出来ます。イエス・キリストは道を示されました。しかし主は戒めを守るよう誰一人強制されません。私たちには完全な自由が与えられているのでイエス・キリストに従うことを選べます。私たちには完全な自由があるので主に従うことを選べます。
No matter what our situation is in life, we have free agency. Free agency gives us the opportunity to make choices in this life without any compulsion.
どんな状況にいようと私たちには自由意志があります。それは私たちに強制されること無くこの世で選択する機会を与えてくれるのです。
We show our Savior Jesus Christ that we love him as we make good choices. We show him that we love him by keeping his commandments. We show him that we love him by following his example.
私たちは善い選択をすることで私たちが救い主イエス・キリストを愛していることを示すのです。私たちは戒めを守ることで主を愛していることを示すのです。私たちは主の模範に従うことで主を愛していることを示すのです。
In this scripture, Nephi explains that our future happiness or misery is determined by the choices we make in this life. We have the opportunity to choose to follow Jesus Christ and receive “liberty and eternal life”. President Monson has taught us the same thing, saying “Decisions Determine Destiny”.
この聖句で、ニーファイは私たちが将来幸福になるか惨めで不幸になるかはこの世で何を選択するかに懸かっていると説明しています。私たちはイエス・キリストに従い、「自由と永遠の命」を選ぶ機会を持っています。モンソン大管長も同じように「（私たちの）選択が永遠の行く末を決める」と教えられました。
As we begin this new year, let us all resolve to choose “liberty and eternal life” through the blessings of our Savior Jesus Christ. Let us resolve to repent of those things that we have done wrong in the past and start making good decisions. Let us resolve to make this new year the best year of our life.
年始にあたり、救い主イエス・キリストの祝福を通して「自由と永遠の命」を選ぶと決意しましょう。過去の悪い行いを悔い改め、これからは善い決断をする決意をしましょう。この新年を今までで最高の年にすると決意しましょう。
Let’s all choose to follow Jesus Christ starting today. I know that our lives will be happier if we do this. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and that he knows each of us as individuals. I know that he loves us very much.
今日からイエス・キリストに従うと決意しましょう。そうすることで私たちの人生はより幸福になることを私は知っています。イエス・キリストが私たちの救い主で私たちを個人的にご存知であることを私は知っています。主が私たちをとても愛しておられることを知っています。
