まことに、まことに、わたしはあなた方に言う、あなたがたは悪魔に誘惑されないように、また悪魔に捕らえられないように、常に目を覚ましていて祈らなくてはならない。弟三ニーファイ１８：１５
Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him. 3 Nephi 18:15
After the Savior’s death and resurrection, he came to the Americas to teach the Nephite people. This short scripture was given by the Lord during that time.
救い主が亡くなり復活された後、主はアメリカ大陸を訪れニーファイの民を教えられました。この短い聖句はその時に主が教えられたものです。
Although it is a short scripture, it contains a very important message for us.
短い聖句ではありますが、私たちにとってとても大切なメッセージが含まれています。
In this scripture, we are taught about our duty in this life. We know that this life is a time of trial and testing. This life is a time given to us to make choices. We can choose good or we can choose evil.
この聖句はこの世における私たちの義務について教えています。私たちはこの世が試しの時期だと知っています。この世は私たちが選択をするために与えられた期間なのです。私たちは良い選択も悪い選択もどちらも自由に出来るのです。
The Lord commands us to “watch and pray always”. What does this mean?
主は私たちに「常に目を覚ましていて祈る」よう戒められました。これはどういった意味でしょう？
In Mosiah 4:30, king Benjamin teaches us that we must “watch ourselves, and our thoughts, and our words, and our deeds, and observe the commandments of God”.
モーサヤ書4 章30 節でベニヤミン王は私たちに「自分の思い、言葉、行いに注意を払い、神の戒めを守る」べきだと教えています。
“To watch” means to protect ourselves against the temptations of Satan. If we watch ourselves, we will read the scriptures. We will attend our Church meetings. We will serve in our callings. “Watching” requires action on our part.
「目を覚ましている、または注意を払う」とはサタンの誘惑から自分を守るということです。もし私たちは目を覚ましているなら、聖典を読むことでしょう。教会の集会に出席し、自分の召しを果すことでしょう。「目を覚ましている」には私たちは行動が要求されます。
But watching alone is not enough. In this scripture, the Lord also commands us to pray always.
しかし、目を覚ましているだけでは十分ではありません。この聖句で主は常に祈るよう私たちを戒めておられます。
We need the guidance of the Spirit of the Lord in everything that we do. We need the blessings that the Lord has promised to the faithful followers of Jesus Christ. We need the daily opportunity to talk with Heavenly Father, to share our problems and trials with him, and to receive direction from him.
私たちの行なうすべてにおいて主の御霊の導きが必要です。私たちはイエス・キリストの従順な従者に約束された祝福が必要です。私たちは天父とお話しし問題や試練を分かち合い指示を頂くために、毎日お祈りという機会が必要です。
It is interesting how these two commandments work together.
興味深いのは、この二つの戒めがお互いにどう関係しあっているかということです。
If we watch ourselves, we will keep the commandments of the Lord. One of the commandments is to pray each day. So part of watching ourselves is praying always. And by praying always, we watch ourselves better.
目を覚ましているなら、私たちは主の戒めを守ることでしょう。戒めの一つに毎日祈ることがあります。ですから目を覚ましていることの一つは常に祈ることです。そして常に祈ることで私たちはよりうまく目を覚ましていることが出来ます。
The Lord has promised us that if we do these things, we will be able to resist the temptations of Satan. Having temptations is part of the plan for our life in this world. Without temptations, we would not be able to show Heavenly Father that we love him and want to keep his commandments.
主は私たちがこれらを行なえばサタンの誘惑に負けることがないと約束されました。誘惑を経験することはこの世における人生の計画の一部です。誘惑なしに私たちが天父を愛し戒めを守りたいことを天父に示すことは出来ません。
We all make poor choices sometimes. We all make mistakes. We all give in to the temptations of Satan. But through the atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we can repent. We can become clean.
私たちは誰でも間違った選択をすることがあります。皆、間違いを犯します。私たちはサタンの誘惑に負けることがあります。しかし私たちは救い主イエス・キリストの贖いを通して悔い改めることが出来ます。私たちは清くなれるのです。
I know that if we keep this commandment, if we watch ourselves and pray always, we will be happy. It does not mean that we will never have any trials or problems. It does mean that we will be given the strength to endure those trials. It means we will be able to grow closer to the Lord.
主の戒めを守るならば、そして目を覚まし常に祈るならば、幸せになれると私は知っています。それは試練や問題をまったく経験しないと言うことではありません。それは試練に耐える力を授かると言うことなのです。それは私たちは成長し、より主に近くなれると言うことです。
Let’s make an effort this week to keep this commandment. Let’s watch ourselves in everything that we do. Let’s remember to pray always.
今週、この戒めを守るために努力してみましょう。私たちの行なうすべてのことに注意を払いましょう。常に祈ることを忘れないようにしましょう。
