したがって、シオンでのんきに暮らす者は、災いである。ニーファイ第二書２８：２４
Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion! 2 Nephi 28:24
This seems like an unusual scripture. What is wrong with being “at ease”? Isn’t Zion supposed to be a place of rest? Why does Nephi warn us against being “at ease”?
これは少し風変わりな聖句に思えます。「のんきに暮らす」ことの何が悪いのでしょう？シオンはそもそも休息の場所ではないでしょうか？何故、ニーファイは「のんびり暮らす」ことに対して警告しているのでしょう？
As we read the rest of chapter 28, Nephi’s message becomes clear. Nephi warns us of many things. He says that there will be many churches and that Satan will have great power.
第28章の残りを読むとき、ニーファイのメッセージがはっきり理解できます。ニーファイは私たちに多くのことを警告しています。彼は多くの教会が存在すること、またサタンが大きな力を持つだろうと言っています。
Nephi warns us about the tricks that Satan will use to try to tempt us and make us leave the Church. In verse 21, Nephi says that Satan will tell people that everything is good, that there is no need to worry, that “all is well”.
ニーファイはサタンが私たちを誘惑し、教会から離れさせようと誘惑し騙すことについて警告しています。21節ではニーファイが、サタンは人々に何でもうまくいき、何も心配することはない「全てはよし」と誘惑すると警告しています。
Nephi’s warning to us to not be “at ease in Zion” means that we must always keep the commandments. It means that we must work in our callings. It means we must serve others.
ニーファイの「のんきに暮ら」さないようにとの警告は、私たちは常に戒めを守るべきだと言う意味です。また私たちは自分の召しを果すべきだったり、他の誰かに仕えるべきだという意味です。
We all have a duty to serve ourselves. We have daily “chores” that must be done every day. If we are to have a strong testimony, we must pray every day. We must study the scriptures every day. We must attend all of our Church meetings.
私たちには皆、奉仕する義務があります。私たちは毎日すべき日課があります。もし強い証を持ちたいと望めば毎日祈らねばなりません。毎日聖典を勉強しなければなりませんし、教会の集会にも出席しなければなりません。
We all have a duty to serve others. We all have callings to serve in the Church. We all have a duty to introduce our friends to the gospel. We all have a responsibility to help the poor and the needy.
私たちは皆、他の誰かに仕える責務があります。私たちは皆、教会で奉仕する召しがあります。私たちは皆、友達に福音を紹介する責務があります。私たちは皆、生活に困っている人を助ける責任があります。
All these things take time. The Lord expects us to do our best. The Lord expects us to use the talents that he has given us.
これらのことをするには時間が必要です。主は私たちに最善を尽くすよう求めておられます。主は私たちに与えられた才能を使うよう求めておられます。
The gospel is not a “Sunday only” gospel. In Alma 31, Alma says that the Zoramites went to church on Sunday, but never thought about it again until the next Sunday.
福音は「日曜だけ」の福音ではありません。アルマ書31章でアルマがゾーラム人は日曜日に教会に行くけれどその後次の日曜まで学んだことや感じたことをまったく考えなかったと言っています。
The gospel is not like that. Serving the Lord Jesus Christ by serving ourselves and those around us is a full-time duty.
福音はそのようなものではありません。私たちや周りの人々に仕えることで主イエス・キリストに仕えることはフルタイムの義務なのです。
This is the message that Nephi gives us.
これがニーファイが私たちに宛てたメッセージです。
Each night, we should ask ourselves an important question. Just like it says in a Church hymn, the question is: “Have I done any good in the world today? (#223)”. 「今日われ善きことさしか」(#137).
私たちは教会の賛美歌「#137」にある「今日われ善きことさしか」という大切な質問を毎晩、自分に問いかけるべきです。
The Lord expects us to be actively involved in the work of salvation. We have much work to do. There is no time for us to be “at ease in Zion”.
主は私たちに救いの業に積極的に携わるように求めておられます。私たちにはすべき業が多くあります。「シオンでのんきに暮らしている」暇などありません。
Let’s try hard this week to complete all of our duties, both to ourselves and to others. Let’s try hard to fulfill our responsibilities promptly. Let’s try hard to help the work of the Lord move forward. Let’s try hard to be of more service. Let’s try hard to do some good in the world each day.
今週、私たちは全ての義務を自他共に全うするよう頑張りましょう。私たちの責任を速やかに実行するよう頑張りましょう。主のみ業を推し進めるよう頑張りましょう。より多く奉仕ができるよう頑張りましょう。毎日この地上で何かよい事を行なうよう頑張りましょう。
I know that we will receive great blessings as we work in the Lord’s vineyard. I know that our lives will be happier. I know that others will be happier because of our service. I know that these things are true.
私たちが主の園で働くとき偉大な祝福を受けると私は知っています。私たちの生活がより幸せになると知っています。私たちの奉仕の故、他の人々もより幸せになると知っています。私はこれらのことが真実だと知っています。
