そこで弟子たちはみそばに寄ってきてイエスを起こし、「主よ、お助けください、わたしたちは死にそうです」と言った。するとイエスは彼らに言われた、「なぜこわがるのか、信仰の薄い者たちよ」。それから起きあがって、風と海とをおしかりになると、大なぎになった。マタイ８:２５−２６

And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.  And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.  Matthew 8:25-26

マタイによる福音書 8 章では、よく知られた救い主の教導の業が書かれています。マルコによる福音書とルカによる福音書もこの出来事について述べています。私たちの賛美歌集には、これを歌った賛美歌さえあります。

In the 8th chapter of Matthew, we read about one of the best known events of the Savior’s earthly ministry.  Both Mark and Luke also wrote about this particular event.  There is even a hymn in our hymnbook about this.

マタイが語っているように、救い主と弟子たちの何人かが船に乗り、ガリラヤの海を渡っていました。彼らが船に乗っていると、大嵐が起こりました。非常に強い風と大波が起こり、舟に水が満ちてきました。

As Matthew tells us, the Savior and some of his disciples got on a boat and were crossing the Sea of Galilee.  While they were on the boat, a great storm arose.  There were very strong winds and big waves and the boat began to be filled with water.

ガリラヤの海は突然起こる嵐で有名でした。湖は幅 13 キロ、長さ 21 キロ程の大きさです。一般に、ユダヤ人は船乗りではなく、この小さな水域でさえも外に出ることを嫌がっていました。この湖では嵐で多くの命が失われました。

The Sea of Galilee was well-known for sudden storms.  It is about 8 miles across and 13 miles long.  The Jewish people, in general, were not sailors and were uncomfortable being out on even this small body of water.  Many lives had been lost in storms on this lake.

弟子たちはとても恐れていました。しかし、イエスは船の奥で寝ておられました。おびえた弟子たちがイエスのところに来て、起こしました。 マルコは、彼らがイエスに「先生、わたしどもがおぼれ死んでも、おかまいにならないのですか」と言ったことを記録しています。

The disciples were very afraid.  Jesus, however, was sleeping in the back of the boat.  The frightened disciples came to him and woke him up.  Mark records them as saying to Jesus, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?”.

イエスは、彼らの信仰の足りないことをとがめ、「なぜこわがるのか、信仰の薄い者たちよ」と言われました。それから救い主は風と海を叱責されました。嵐はすぐに止み、大なぎになりました。

Jesus rebuked them for their lack of faith, saying to them, “Why are ye so fearful, O ye of little faith?”.  The Savior then rebuked the wind and the sea. The storm immediately stopped and there was a great calm.  

私たちも、これと同じ祝福を人生の嵐の中で手に入れることができます。主がすべての力と知識をお持ちであることを時々忘れてしまいます。神は私たちが何を経験しているのかをご存知で、私たちが「信仰が薄く」なければ、いつでも助けてくださいます。

This same blessing is available to each of us in our own storms of life.  Sometimes we forget that the Lord has all power and all knowledge.  He knows what we are experiencing and is ready to help us, if we are not “of little faith”.

ガリラヤの海の嵐が弟子たちを滅ぼすことはできませんし、人生の嵐も「信仰が薄くなければ」私たちを滅ぼすことはありません。

The storm on the Sea of Galilee could not destroy the disciples and the storms in our own lives cannot destroy us, if we are not “of little faith”.

人生の嵐は、助けを求めてもすぐに終わるとは限りません。嵐は、私たちが教訓を学んだり、経験を積んだりするのに役立つ教育ツールである場合があります。嵐は、私たちがイエス・キリストへの信仰を示す機会となることがあります。

The storms of life do not always end as soon as we ask for help.  Sometimes the storm is a teaching tool, to help us learn some particular lesson or to gain some experience.  Sometimes the storm may be an opportunity for us to show our faith in Jesus Christ.

私たちが自分自身の小さなガリラヤの海を航海するとき、救い主には恐ろしい風や大きな波を静める力と権能があることを覚えておく必要があります。私たちの嵐がどのようなものであったとしても、救い主は私たちが安全に遠い岸にたどり着くのを助ける力をお持ちです。私たちが神の御心を行ない、神のみ業を成し遂げようとするとき、神は私たちを守り、導いてくださいます。

As we each sail across our own small Sea of Galilee, we need to remember that the Savior has the power and the authority to calm those terrible winds and big waves.  Whatever our own personal storm may be, the Savior has the ability to help us safely reach the distant shore.  He will protect us and guide us as we seek to do his will and to accomplish his work.

新しい週が始まります。ガリラヤの海の嵐から学ぶ教訓を覚えて過ごしましょう。嵐が起こった時の弟子たちが持った恐怖と不安を考えてみましょう。救い主が風と波をどのように叱責されたか、そして大なぎになったことを思い出しましょう。イエス・キリストを信じて、人生の嵐を静めさせてください。主は私たち一人一人をご存知で愛しておられ、人生の嵐を乗り越えるのをいつも助けてくださることを忘れないでください。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the storm on the Sea of Galilee.  Let’s remember the disciples and their panic and terror during the storm.  Let’s remember how the Savior rebuked the wind and the waves and that there was a great calm.  Let’s have faith in Jesus Christ and allow him to calm the storms of our own lives.  Let’s remember that he knows and loves each one of us and will always help us get through the storms of life.
