またレムエルに向かって言った。「おお、おまえはこの谷のように、主の戒めを守ることにおいて堅く確固として、揺るぎなくあるように。」第一ニーファイ２：１０

And he also spake unto Lemuel: O that thou mightiest be like unto this valley, firm and steadfast, and immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord.  1 Nephi 2:10

There are many people to say that The Book of Mormon was written by Joseph Smith.  They claim that he just made up the story. They don’t believe that he translated it from plates.

モルモン書はジョセフ・スミスによって書かれたと言う人が多くいます。彼らはジョセフが話を作り上げたと主張し、彼が版から翻訳したことを信じていません。

These people have obviously never read 1 Nephi.  

そういう人は明らかに第１ニーファイを読んだことが無いに違いありません。

Nephi’s account of his family in Jerusalem and in the desert offer many items that help to prove the truth of The Book of Mormon.  This scripture is one of those small items.

エルサレムと荒れ野にいた時のニーファイの家族についてニーファイが残した記録はモルモン書の真実性を証明する助けとなる箇所が幾つか見つかります。この聖句はそのひとつと言えます。

When talking to his son Lemuel, Lehi encourages him to be “like unto this valley, firm and steadfast, and immovable”.

息子のレムエルに話していた時、リーハイは彼に「この谷のように、主の戒めを守ることにおいて堅く確固として、揺るぎなくあるように」と勧めています。

What??  Using the image of a valley as something that is firm and steadfast?

変ですね？谷の象徴を何か堅く確固なものとして使っていますね？

What western writer would ever have made such a clumsy mistake?  If Joseph Smith was making up the story, he would have said that Lemuel should be firm and steadfast like a MOUNTAIN, not like a valley.

西洋の作家がこのようなへぼな間違いを犯しすのでしょうか？もしジョセフ・スミスが話を作り上げたのなら、彼は谷ではなく「山」のように堅く確固であるようにと表現したはずです。

We all would have said mountain as well.  We know that it is a mountain that is firm and steadfast.  We even have many hymns that talk about mountains being firm and steadfast.

私たちも皆、山と言うでしょう。私たちは山が堅く堅固なものだと知っています。多くの讃美歌も山が堅く堅固であると述べています。

So how did such an obvious mistake get into The Book of Mormon?

どうしてその様な明らかな間違いがモルモン書にあり得るでしょう？

What few of us know even today with all our education and knowledge is that in the deserts of Arabia, it has always been the valleys that are thought of as being firm and steadfast.  There are few mountains in the Arabian deserts, but there are many great valleys.

アラビアの砂漠では谷が堅く堅固なものと昔から考えられていることは、現代でも教育や知識を受けている者ですらほんの僅かしか知りません。アラビア砂漠には山は殆どありませんが谷は非常に沢山あります。

It is those great valleys that have always been the path for the trade routes.  It is those great valleys that have always been the escape routes for people during times of danger.  It is those great valleys that are, to the desert travelers, firm and steadfast.

それらの大きな谷が貿易ルートの道として常に使われてきました。それらの大きな谷が危険な状況下で逃げる道として常に使われてきました。砂漠を旅する者にとってそれらの大きな谷が堅く堅固なものなのです。

This phrase “like unto this valley, firm and steadfast”, which seems at first to be an obvious mistake, is in fact another witness that the Prophet Joseph Smith translated the plates just as he said he did.

「この谷のように、堅く確固」という一見明らかな間違いのように思えるこの文節は、実は預言者ジョセフ・スミスが述べているように彼が版を翻訳したことのもう一つの証明であります。

At the time that The Book of Mormon was first printed, the idea that any ancient people kept records on metal plates was absurd.  No one had ever heard of that before. Papyrus from Egypt, maybe. Carvings on stones, maybe. But metal plates? The idea was a big joke.

モルモン書が最初に印刷された時は、古代の人々が金属板に記録を残したというのはバカげた考えでした。だれもそれまでそんなことを聞いたことがありませんでした。エジプトのパピルスとか、石に彫ったりするならあり得るのに、金属板ですか？その考えは冗談としか受け止められませんでした。

Then strange things started happening.  As more exploration of the Middle East was done, metal plates started turning up everywhere.  The Nag Hammadi library, the Qumran documents, the Dead Sea Scrolls. Suddenly, the claim that The Book of Mormon came from metal plates was not so strange anymore.  

その後、不思議なことが始まりました。中東で更に多くの探査が行われ、金属板があちこちから出てきました。ナグ・ハマディ図書館、クムラン書簡、死海文書。突然、モルモン書が金属板から出てきたこという宣言がそれほど不思議なことではなくなりました。

1 Nephi is full of these small and simple things.  It is full of things that seem very odd to those who do not understand the history or cultures of the Middle East.  It is those same small and simple things that, today, help to testify of the truthfulness of The Book of Mormon and of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

第１ニーファイにはそうした小さく簡単なことが盛沢山です。中近東の歴史や文化が分からない人にはおかしく見えることが一杯あるでしょう。そうした小さく簡単なことがモルモン書と預言者ジョセフ・スミスの真実性を今日証する助けとなるのです。

As we read and study The Book of Mormon, let’s look for more of these small and simple things.  Let’s look for those things that help to testify of its truthfulness. Let’s look for those things that will help to strengthen our own testimony about The Book of Mormon and the Prophet Joseph Smith.

私たちがモルモン書を読んで学ぶとき、そうした小さく簡単な事柄をもっと探してみましょう。その真実性への証しい手助けとなる事柄を探してみましょう。モルモン書と預言者ジョセフ・スミスについて証が強まる助けとなる事柄を探してみましょう。
