わたしニーファイは、主の言葉を心に留めるように兄たちに勧めた。まことに、わたしは兄たちが神の言葉を心に留めて、何事においても常に神の戒めを守ることを覚えるように、全精力を傾け、能力の限りを尽くして兄たちに勧めた。ニーファイ第一書１５：２５
Wherefore, I Nephi, did exhort them to give heed unto the word of the Lord; yea, I did exhort them with all the energies of my soul, and with all the faculty which I possessed, that they would give heed to the word of God and remember to keep his commandments always in all things. 1 Nephi 15:25
In the 15th chapter of 1 Nephi, Nephi answers questions from his older brothers about the things their father Lehi told them concerning his vision of the Tree of Life. Nephi’s older brothers were not able to understand what they had been taught. They had many questions.
第１ニーファイ15章ではニーファイは父リーハイが話した命の木の示現について兄たちの質問に答えています。ニーファイの兄たちは教わったことを理解できませんでした。彼らは多くの疑問がありました。
Nephi’s first response to their questions was simply, “have ye inquired of the Lord?”
彼らの質問に対するニーファイの最初の回答は「主に尋ねてみましたか」という簡単なものでした。
Nephi knew that the best way to understand the things that their father had taught was to pray and ask the Lord. That is how Nephi learned about the meaning of the vision.
ニーファイは、父が教えた事柄を理解する最良の方法は、祈りと主に尋ねることであると知っていました。ニーファイはそのようにして示現の意味について学んだのです。
However, his older brothers didn’t believe that they would receive an answer to their prayers. They were not even willing to try to get an answer.
しかし、兄たちは祈りの答えを受け撮るとは信じていませんでした。彼らは理解するための努力さえしたいとは思いませんでした。
Nephi is very disappointed in their lack of faith. He asks them why they are being so stubborn.
ニーファイは兄たちの不信仰さに嘆いていました。彼は兄たちに何故そんなに強情なのか尋ねました。
But, Nephi loves his brothers and wants to help them gain greater faith. He patiently answers all their questions about the things their father taught. He explains about the Tree of Life, the river of water, and the iron rod.
しかしニーファイは兄たちを愛し、彼らがより強い信仰を持てるよう助けたいと望んでいました。彼は辛抱強く父の教えたことへの質問にすべて答えています。彼は命の木や水が流れている川、鉄の棒について説明しています。
In verse 25, Nephi teaches us a great lesson. He teaches us how we are to help teach those around us.
25節ではニーファイは私たちに重要な教訓を教えています。彼は私たちがどのように周りの人々にその事を教えることができるのかを教えています。
In today’s terms, Nephi’s older brothers were not “active members of the Church”. They had been taught the gospel, but were not keeping the commandments. They knew about prayer, but would not pray. They had learned about the commandments of the Lord, but would not keep them.
今日の言葉ではニーファイの兄たちは「教会の活発会員」ではありませんでした。彼らは福音を教えられていましたが、戒めを守っていませんでした。彼らは祈りについて知ってはいても祈りませんでした。主の戒めについて学んでいてもそれを守りませんでした。
How did Nephi react? Did he refuse to teach them? Was he impatient or critical? Did he just walk away, perhaps thinking he had tried his best but they wouldn’t listen?
ニーファイはどのように対応したのでしょうか？彼はそれを兄たちに教えることを拒みましたか？せっかちだったり批判的でしたか？最善を尽くしたのに兄たちは聞かなかったという言い訳で諦めましたか？
Nephi says he “did exhort them to give heed unto the word of the Lord”. In other words, he worked very hard to help them understand. He did not just present a brief message and then leave.
ニーファイは「主の言葉を心に留めるように兄たちに勧めた」と述べています。言い換えれば、彼は兄たちが理解するよう熱心に働いたのです。彼は簡単なメッセージを伝えてその場を後にしたのではありません。
To emphasize the level of his efforts even more, he says he “did exhort them with all the energies of my soul, and with all the faculty which I possessed”.
彼の努力をもっと強調してみると、彼は「全精力を傾け、能力の限りを尽くして兄たちに勧めた」と述べています。
Do we fulfil our callings like Nephi did? Do we serve “with all the energies” of our soul? Do we do our best to help others understand the doctrines of the gospel? Do we work hard to help those who have strayed from the covenant path?
私たちはニーファイのように自分の召しを果たしていますか？「全精力を傾けて」仕えていますか？他の人が福音の教義を理解できるよう最善を尽くしていますか？聖約の道から迷い出た人々を助けるために熱心に働いていますか？
Nephi set a great example for us to follow.
ニーファイは私たちが従うべき素晴らしい模範を示しています。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember his example. Let’s serve with all the energies of our souls. Let’s use all of our faculties to help others develop greater faith in Jesus Christ. Let’s be more like Nephi.
