生まれながらの人は神の敵であり、アダムの堕落以来そうであって、今後もそうである。また人は、聖なる御霊の勧めに従い、主なるキリストの贖罪により、生まれながらの人を捨てて聖徒となり、子供のように従順で、柔和で、謙遜で、忍耐強く、愛にあふれた者となり、子供が父に従うように、主がその人に負わせるのがふさわしとされるすべてのことに喜んで従わないかぎり、とこしえにいつまでも神の敵となるであろう。モーザヤ書３：１９

For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.  Mosiah 3:19

In this well-known scripture, king Benjamin teaches us a great principle.  He clearly explains the true nature of man.  

この良く知られた聖句ではベニヤミン王がすばらしい原則を私たちに教えています。彼は人の真の性質をわかりやすく説明しています。

For centuries, religious leaders and philosophers have argued about whether man is basically good or basically bad.  In one short scripture, king Benjamin answers that question.

何世紀もの間、宗教指導者や哲学者は人は基本的に善なのかまた悪なのかを論じてきました。ひとつの短い聖句でベニヤミン王はその質問に答えています。

He teaches us that must work hard to become better.  The “natural man” gives in to the temptations of Satan.  We have all committed sin.  Because of this, we all have become “an enemy to God”.  If we do not repent, we will remain an enemy to God.

彼はより良くなるために一生懸命に働くよう教えました。「生まれながらの人」はサタンの誘惑に負けてしまいます。私たちは皆罪を犯しています。それゆえ私たちは「神の敵」となるのです。もし悔い改めなければ神の敵のままなのです。

King Benjamin explains what we need to do to repent and to become righteous.  It is a simple plan.  It is something that everyone can do.  It is the same for everyone.

ベニヤミン王は悔い改めて正しくなるために何をすべきか説明しています。それは簡単な計画で、だれもが出来ることです。それは誰にとっても同じものです。

First, we are taught that we must “yield to the enticings of the Holy Spirit”.  This means that we need to listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost.  And, more importantly, we need to follow those promptings.  Listening does not help us unless we take action and do what we are prompted to do.

まず、私たちは「聖なる御霊の勧めに従わ」ねばならないと教えられました。それは聖霊のささやきに（こころの）耳をすませる必要があるという意味です。そして更に重要なのはそれらのささやきに従わねばならないと言うことです。聞くには聞いても、行動せず、するように促されたことをしなければ何の助けにもなりません。

Next, he teaches us that we must “become a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord”.  It is only through いthe atonement of Jesus Christ that we are able to repent.  It is the atonement that makes it possible for us to become clean.  It is the atonement that makes it possible for us to become “saints”.

次に、彼は「主なるキリストの贖罪により聖徒となる」よう教えています。イエス・キリストの贖罪によってのみ私たちは悔い改めることが出来るのです。贖罪が私たちを清くしてくれるのです。贖罪が私たちを聖徒にしてくれるのです。

Finally, king Benjamin teaches us that we must become like a child.  We must be “willing to submit to all things” that the Lord commands us to do.  We need to be obedient.

最後にベニヤミン王は私たちは子供のようにならなければならないと教えました。私たちは主が命じられた「すべてのことに喜んで従わ」ねばなりません。従順でなければならないのです。

King Benjamin lists many things that we need to learn.  We need to learn to be humble.  We need to learn to be patient.  We need to learn to be full of love. 

The “natural man” does not like those things.  As a natural man, we are proud.  We are impatient.  We are angry with people around us.  That is why the natural man is an enemy to God.

ベニヤミン王は私たちが学ぶべき多くのことを書き残しました。謙遜で、忍耐強く、愛にあふれた者となることを学ばねばなりません。「生まれながらの人」はそういうことが好きではありません。生まれながらの人は傲慢で短気です。周りの人に腹を立てます。それだから生まれながらの人は神の敵なのです。　

I know that if we will follow the teachings of king Benjamin, we will be able to become saints.  We will be able to have the guidance of the Holy Ghost.  We will be able to learn the qualities that we need to be a “friend” to God.  I know that these teachings are true.  I know that we will be greatly blessed as we follow these principles.  I know we can “put off the natural man”.

私はベニヤミン王の教えに従うなら私たちは聖徒になることが出来ると知っています。聖霊の導きを受けることを知っています。神の「友人」であれるための資質を学ぶことが出来ます。私はこれらの教えが真実だと知っています。私はこれらの原則に従う時大いなる祝福が与えられると知っています。私は私たちが「生まれながらの人を捨てる」ことが出来ると知っています。
