わたしのシオンを起こして確立するように努めなさい。すべてのことについてわたしの戒めを守りなさい。わたしの戒めを守り、最後まで堪え忍ぶならば、あなたは永遠の命を得るであろう。この賜物は、神のあらゆる賜物の中で最も大いなる物である。教義と聖約１４:６−７

Seek to bring forth my Zion.  Keep my commandments in all things.  And, if you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.  Doctrine & Covenants 14:6-7

Section 14 of the Doctrine & Covenants records a revelation given through the Prophet Joseph Smith on behalf of David Whitmer in June of 1829.  

教義と聖約の14章は、1829年6月に預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通してデビッド・ホイットマーのために与えられた啓示です。

The Whitmer family were some of the earliest converts to the Church and provided a great deal of help to the Prophet Joseph Smith.  Joseph was living at the Whitmer home while he finished the translation of the Book of Mormon.

David Whitmer became one of the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon.  Four of the other Whitmer boys were included in the 8 Witnesses.  One or more of the Whitmer family received instructions from the Lord through the Prophet in Sections 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18.

デビッド・ホイットマーはモルモン書の三人の証人の一人になりました。ホイットマー家の4人の少年は八人の証人に加わりました。ホイットマー家の幾人かが、14、15、16、17、および18章で預言者を通じて主から指示を受けました。

In Section 14, David Whitmer wanted to know what he should do to assist in the work of the Restoration.  In answer to his question, the Lord gave several points of instruction.  These instructions pertain to us just as much as they did to David Whitmer.

First, the Lord instructed David, and us as well, that our first duty was to “see to bring forth my Zion”.  What does that mean?

We seek to bring forth Zion when we share our testimonies and knowledge of the gospel with others.  We seek to bring forth Zion when we serve in our callings.  We seek to bring forth Zion when we minister to others.  We seek to bring forth Zion when we stand as examples of followers of Jesus Christ.  We seek to bring forth Zion when we are kind, courteous, helpful, and concerned about others.

福音についての証と知識を他の人と分かち合うとき、私たちはシオンを起こして確立するよう努めます。私たちは召しを果たすとき、シオンを起こして確立するよう努めます。私たちは他の人に仕えるとき、シオンを起こして確立するよう努めます。私たちは、イエス・キリストの従者の模範となるとき、シオンを起こして確立するよう努めます。私たちは、親切で、礼儀正しく、面倒見がよく、他人を気にかけるとき、シオンを起こして確立するよう努めます。

Second, the Lord instructs us to “keep my commandments in all things”.  The phrase “in all things” is important.  We do not have the option of keeping the commandments that are easy for us.  We do not have the option of choosing which commandments to obey.  We do not have the option to keep most of the commandments, most of the time.  We are to keep all the commandments, all of the time.

第２に、主は私たちに「すべてのことについてわたしの戒めを守りなさい」と命じられておられます。「すべてことにおいて」というフレーズは重要です。 私たちには、簡単な戒めだけを守るというオプションはありません。従うべき戒めを選ぶオプションもありません。ほとんどの場合とか、ほとんどの戒めを守るというオプションもありません。私たちは常にすべての戒めを守るべきなのです。

That sounds pretty hard.  Luckily, when we fail, as we all do sometimes, we can repent and try to do better.  The Lord does not expect us to be perfect, but he does expect us to do our best.

それはかなり難しく思えます。幸いなことに、私たちが失敗したとき、皆がよくするように、悔い改めて、より良くしようとすることができます。主は私たちが完璧であることを期待しておられませんが、最善を尽くすことは期待しておられます。

The promised reward for keeping the commandments in all things is the gift of eternal life.  This, the Lord says, is the greatest of all gifts of God.  This is the blessing that we will receive if we keep the commandments and endure to the end.  

すべてのことにおいて戒めを守ることに対する約束された報いは、永遠の命という賜物です。これは、神のすべての賜物の中で最も大いなる物であると主は言われています。戒めを守り、最後まで耐え忍ぶならば、私たちが享受する祝福です。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the instructions the Lord gave to David Whitmer.  Let’s remember that we are commanded to keep all the commandments in all things.  Let’s remember that eternal life is the greatest gift of God and that we can qualify for this wonderful blessing by following the instructions of the Lord.
