おお、神の慈しみの何と深いことか。わたしたちがこの恐ろしい怪物に捕まらないように、神は逃れる道を備えてくださっている。まことに、その恐ろしい怪物とは死と地獄であり、わたしはそれを肉体の死および霊の死と呼ぶ。 二ニーファイ第書９章

O how great the goodness of our God, who prepareth a way for our escape from the grasp of this awful monster; yea, that monster, death and hell, which I call the death of the body, and also the death of the spirit.  2 Nephi 9:10

In this chapter, the prophet Nephi teaches us about the great Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ.  

この章では預言者ニーファイが救い主イエス・キリストの大いなる贖いについて私たちに教えています。

Nephi teaches several important and eternal truths in the chapter.  

ニーファイはこの章で幾つかの重要かつ永遠の真理を教えています。

First of all, he reminds us of the one absolute guarantee in this life.  That guarantee is that everyone who is ever born into this world will someday die.  Our time here may be only a few minutes, or it may be many decades, but at some point, every one of us will die. There are no exceptions to this rule.

まず最初に、彼は私たちにこの世の絶対的な確かな保証を思い起こさせています。その保証とは、この世に生まれてきたすべての人は必ずこの世を去る日が来るということです。私たちのこの地上での時間がほんの数分だけなのか、何十年も続くかもしませんが私たちは全員いつか死にます。この法則には例外はありません。

However, we are also taught by many of the prophets that “in our bodies we shall see God”.  We have been taught that eternal happiness comes to those whose spirit and body have been re-united.

しかし私たちは多くの預言者から「私たちは肉体のうちに神を見るであろう」と教えられています。私たちは霊と肉体が結合した人々に永遠の幸福は与えられると教えられています。

How is this possible?

どうしてそれが可能でしょう？

It is possible through the power of the resurrection.  The second absolute guarantee is that everyone who was ever born will also be resurrected.  Young or old, wicked or righteous, every one will someday be resurrected.  

それは復活の力を通して可能です。二つ目の確かな保証は、これまで生まれたすべての人が復活するということです。老いも若きも、邪悪な者も善良な者も、すべての者がいつの日か復活するのです。

The Atonement of Jesus Christ makes it possible for us to be resurrected, to have our spirits and our bodies re-united.

イエス・キリストの贖いは私たちの霊と肉体が結合し、私たちが復活することを可能にしてくれます。

Why is this important?

どうしてそれが重要なのでしょう？

In verse 8 of this chapter, Nephi teaches us that if we had to remain as spirits only, without a body, we would “be subject to that angel who fell from before the presence of the Eternal God, and became the devil”.  Without our bodies, we cannot receive eternal happiness.  

この章の8節でニーファイは私たちに、もし肉体の無い霊の状態にとどまっているならは「永遠​の​神​の​御​前​から​落ちて​悪魔​と​なった​あの​天使​に​従う​よう​に​なる」と私たちに教えています。私たちは肉体無しに永遠の幸福を受けることはできません。

After we are resurrected, we must all stand before God, to be judged of our works here on earth.  Those who have kept the commandments and have been righteous will receive eternal blessings, joy, and happiness.  Those who have rejected the prophets and have not repented of their sins will receive the “second death”.

私たちは復活後、ここ地上での働きを裁かれるために私たちは皆神のみ前に立たねばなりません。戒めを守り、義を通したものは永遠の祝福と喜びと幸福を受けとります。預言者を拒み、罪を悔い改めなかったものは「第二の死」を受けるのです。

The “second death” means being cut off from the presence of Heavenly Father.  This “second death” is often referred to in the scriptures as “hell”.  

「第二の死」とは天父のみ前から切り離されることを意味します。この「第二の死」は、聖典でしばしば「地獄」と呼ばれています。

The great Atonement of Jesus Christ provides an escape from both temporal death (the grave) and from spiritual death (hell).  Nephi teaches us that it is only through Jesus Christ that we are able to receive eternal happiness. It is only through Jesus Christ that we are able to be resurrected and receive our bodies again.  It is only through Jesus Christ that we are able to repent of our sins and return to live with our Heavenly parents again.

イエス・キリストの大いなる贖いは、肉体の死（墓）と霊の死（地獄）から逃れる道を備えてくれます。ニーファイはイエス・キリストを通してのみ永遠の幸福を受けることができると私たちに教えています。イエス・キリストを通してのみ私たちは復活し、再び肉体を受けることができます。イエス・キリストを通してのみ、私たちは罪を悔い改め再び天の両親とともに住むことができるのです。

All that we do on this earth, all that will happen to us in the eternities, all that we ever hope for, is based on the Atonement of our Savior.  It is only through our Savior Jesus Christ that we are able to have hope.

私たちがこの地上で行うこと、永遠を通して起こること、望んでいることのすべては私たちの救い主の贖いによるのです。救い主イエス・キリストを通してのみ私たちは希望を持てるのです。

As we go through this next week, let’s think about what the Atonement of Jesus Christ means to us individually.  Let’s remember that the Atonement is the key to our salvation. Let’s remember to be better followers of our Savior Jesus Christ.

イエス・キリストの贖いが私たちにとって何を意味するか考えて来週を過ごしましょう。贖いが私たちの救いの鍵であることを忘れないようにしましょう。私たちの救い主イエス・キリストのより良い従者であることを心にとめましょう。
