あなたは、年が若いために人に軽んじられてはならない。むしろ、言葉にも、行状にも、愛にも、信仰にも、純潔にも、信者の模範になりなさい。１テモテ４：１２
Let no man despise thy youth; be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12
Timothy was one of Paul’s junior companions during his missionary travels. Timothy was called as the first bishop for the Church in Ephesus. In this first letter that Paul wrote to Timothy, Paul gives us some very clear instruction on our duties as members of Christ’s church.
テモテはパウロと伝道活動していた時の後輩同僚で、エペソにある教会の最初のビショップにも召されました。パウロがテモテに宛てたこの最初の手紙の中で教会員としての義務について私たちに明確な指導を与えています。
The main theme of Paul’s teaching is that we should always “be an example of the believers”. We are to be examples to all those around us.
パウロの主な教えは「常に信者の模範に」なりなさいと言うことです。私たちは周りにいる人々の模範でいなければなりません。
We are representatives of the Church every day, wherever we go, whatever we do. People should see that we are different.
私たちは毎日どこへ行こうと、何をしようと教会を代表しているのです。私たちは他の人と同じようではいけません。
Paul lists several characteristics that true believers should have.
パウロは真の信者が持つべき特質についていくつか述べています。
First, ‘in word”. Do we use proper language when we speak? Do we refrain from profanity? Do we refrain from words that belittle someone or make someone feel bad?
まず「言葉において」。私たちは話すとき正しい言葉を使いますか？不敬な言葉を避けていますか？誰かをけなしたり、不愉快な気持ちにさせないようにしていますか？
Next, “in conversation”. Are our conversations appropriate? Do we avoid improper topics in our conversations? Are our conversations uplifting and helpful?
次に「会話において」。私たちの会話は適切ですか？会話で不適切な話題を避けていますか？道徳的に向上し、他の人の助けになるような会話をしますか？
Next, “in charity”. Do we look for opportunities to serve others? Do we have the “pure love of Christ” in our hearts for those around us? Are we willing to help those in need?
次に「愛において」。他の誰かに仕える機会を探していますか？自分の周りの人々に「キリストの純粋の愛」を持っていますか？助けの必要な人を喜んで助けたいと思っていますか？
Next, “in spirit”. Do we keep the commandments? Do we pray for the Spirit of the Lord to be with us each day? Do we follow the promptings that the Spirit gives to us?
次に「霊において」（注：日本語の聖書には訳されていません）。戒めを守っていますか？毎日主の御霊があるよう祈っていますか？御霊の促しに従っていますか？
Next, “in faith”. Do we have a testimony of Jesus Christ? Do we remember the great atoning sacrifice that our Savior made for us? Do we trust in the Lord through all of our trials?
次に「信仰において」。イエス・キリストに証を持っていますか？救い主が私たちのために行なわれた贖いの犠牲を信頼し頼っていますか？
Finally, “in purity”. Are our thoughts, our words, our actions, clean and pure? Do we keep ourselves away from evil things? Are we worthy to partake of the sacrament each week?
最後に「純潔において」。私たちの思いや言葉、行動は清く純粋ですか？悪いことがらから遠ざかっていますか？毎週聖餐をとれるようふさわしくしていますか？
Consider where you are in each of these characteristics of a true believer in Jesus Christ. What can you do to be an even better “example of the believers”?
イエス・キリストの真の信者としてあなたがどれ程これらの特質に近くいるのか考えてみてください。より良い「信者の模範」となるためにあなたは何が出来ますか？
Let’s make a greater effort this week to remember our duty as members of Christ’s church. Let’s make a greater effort to improve in the characteristics of a true believer. Let’s make a greater effort to be good “examples of the believers”.
今週、キリストの教会の会員として私たちの義務を忘れないように努力しましょう。真の信者の特質を更に改善するよう頑張りましょう。よい「信者の模範」となるようもっと努めましょう。
I know we can do this. I know that many lives will be blessed by our righteous efforts.
私たちにはそれが出来ることを知っています。私たちの義にかなった努力が多くの人が祝福することを知っています。
