さて、わたしはあなたがたが謙遜であり、従順で素直であり、容易に勧告に従い、忍耐と寛容に富み、すべてのことについて自制し、いつも熱心に神の戒めを守るように、また霊的にも物質にも、必要としているものは何でも求め、与えられるものについては何であろうといつも神に感謝するように願っている。またあなたがたは信仰と希望、慈愛を必ず持つようにしてほしい。そうするときに、あなたがたはいつも多くの行いをするであろう。アルマ書７：２３−２４

And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive.  And see that ye have faith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works. Alma 7:23-24

As we come to the end of another year, it is a good time to review our progress during the previous year.  It is also a good time to set goals for improvement in the new year. 

今年も終わろうとしています。自分の進歩を見直してみる良い機会ではないでしょうか。そして新年の更なる成長を目指して目標を立てる良い機会にもなるのではないでしょうか。

We all are imperfect people, doing our best to improve ourselves.  We all want to become more like our Savior. 

私たちは誰でも不完全ですが進歩するよう最善を尽くし、救い主のようになりたいと望んでいます。

We become more like our Savior by taking small steps.  We become more like our Savior by trying to be better each day.  We become more like our Savior by trying to eliminate our weaknesses.

救い主のようになろうと小さな一歩を踏みながら前進しています。昨日より良くなろうと努力しています。救い主のようになろうと自分の弱点を克服しようと努力しています。

In this scripture, Alma gives us good advice.  He teaches us how we should act, how we should treat others, how we should pray.

この聖句でアルマは良い提案をしてくれています。彼はどのように行動し、どのように他の人を扱い、どう祈るべきか私たちに教えています。

Alma’s teaching is a good foundation for our own improvement plan for the new year.  2018 is finished. We have all made some mistakes this year. We have all tried to improve.  We have all had some trials and challenges.

アルマの教えは私たちが新年の抱負を考える上でよい基盤となるのではないでしょうか。2018年は終わりました。誰もが何かしか間違いを犯したことでしょう。誰もが進歩するよう頑張ったことでしょう。誰もが試練や苦難を経験したことでしょう。

Now we have a brand new year ahead of us.  This is a great time to evaluate our progress, see where we need to improve, and decide what we will do this year to become better followers of Jesus Christ.

私たちは今、新年を迎えようとしています。自分の進歩を反省し、どこを改善し、イエス・キリストのより良い従者となるには新年に何をすればよいか決めるのに良い時期ではないでしょうか。

Alma tells us we should be humble, submissive, and gentle.  It is only when we humble ourselves that we are able to hear the promptings of the Spirit.  It is only when we are submissive and obey those promptings that we are blessed. And, as we improve our humility, we become more gentle.  We become kinder. We become more like our Savior.

アルマは私たちに謙遜であり、従順で素直でなければならないと教えています。私たちが御霊のささやきを聞けるのは謙遜である時のみです。私たちが祝福を受けるのは従順でその促しに従う時のみです。謙虚さを増すとき私たちはより優しくなります。より親切になりますし、より救い主に近いものになります。

Alma teaches us to be patient.  Patience is a quality that is difficult for many of us to learn.  We want things to happen on our time schedule. We get frustrated when the Lord’s time schedule is different than ours.  Alma reminds us that we need to be patient and long-suffering.

アルマは忍耐強くあるよう教えています。忍耐を学ぶことは多くの人にとって難しいことです。私たちは自分の都合のよいように物事が起きて欲しいと望みます。主の予定が自分の希望する予定と異なっているとイライラしてしまいます。アルマは私たちに忍耐強く長く耐え忍ぶよう教えています。

Most importantly, Alma teaches us that we must be diligent in keeping the commandments at all times.  If we do not keep the commandments, we cannot receive the promised blessings. Being diligent means working hard, doing our best, every day.

最も大切なのは、常に戒めを守るよう勤勉でなければならないとアルマは教えています。もし戒めを守らなければ私たちは当然約束された祝福を受けられません。勤勉であるということは毎日熱心に働き、最善を尽くすと言うことです。

We are also to pray for help.  Alma tells us to ask Heavenly Father for the things that we need, both temporal and spiritual.  Heavenly Father wants to bless us. He wants to help us. He wants to make our lives more joyful.  We need to pray for guidance, for help, for answers. 

私たちは助けを求めて祈らねばなりません。アルマは私たちがこの世的にも霊的にも必要なものを天父に尋ねるよう教えています。天父は私たちを祝福したいと望んでおられます。助けたいと望んでおられます。私たちの生活がより喜びにあふれるよう望んでおられます。私たちは導きと助け、答えを求めて祈る必要があります。

We need to remember to express our love and our gratitude to Heavenly Father for the many blessings that he sends to us each day.  We don’t want to be like 9 of the 10 lepers who were healed by the Savior. Even after this great miracle, only 1 of the lepers remembered to express his gratitude to the Savior.  The others forgot to even say “thank you”.

私たちは毎日天父が送ってくださる多くの祝福に感謝の気持ちと愛を示すことを忘れないようにしなければなりません。救い主に癒されたらい病人10人のうち9人のようになってはなりません。この大きな奇跡を見た後ですら、たった一人のらい病人だけが救い主に感謝の気持ちを示すのを忘れませんでした。他の者は「ありがとう」という言葉すら忘れていたのです。

As we do these things, Alma teaches us that we will “always abound in good works”.  

私たちもこの教えに従うとき「いつも多くの良い行いをするであろう」とアルマは教えています。

As we go through this new year, let’s remember to always be humble.  Let’s remember to keep the commandments diligently. Let’s remember to always thank Heavenly Father for the many blessings that we receive each day.  

謙遜であることを常に忘れないよう新年を過ごしましょう。戒めを熱心に守ることを忘れないようにしましょう。毎日受けている多くの祝福を天父に常に感謝することを忘れないようにしましょう。

Let’s always “abound in good works” this year.

「いつも多くの良い行いを」しましょう。
