さて、この地方で羊飼たちが夜、野宿しながら羊の群れの番をしていた。すると主の御使が現れ、主の栄光が彼らをめぐり照したので、彼らは非常に恐れた。御使は言った、『恐れるな。見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救い主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである。』ルカ２：８－１１

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring unto good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.  Luke 2:8-11

As we approach the end of another year, we come to the commemoration of one of the greatest events in the history of this world.  With the entire Christian world, we pause to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

今年も終わりが近づき、歴史の中で最も偉大なひとつのイベントを記念することになります。クリスチャンの世界では、救い主イエス・キリストの誕生を祝うためにお休みします。

Now, we know that the Savior was born in the springtime, not in the middle of winter.  The shepherds are only out in the fields with their flocks in the springtime when the new lambs are born.  It is very symbolic that the Lamb of God should be born in that same season of the year.

私たちは救い主が真冬ではなく春に誕生されたことを知っています。羊飼いは、新しい子羊が生まれる春にだけ群れを野外に連れ出します。神の子羊がその同じ季節に誕生されたことは非常に象徴的です。

Whether we celebrate the birth of the Savior in winter or in spring does not really matter.  What is important is that we remember that great event, the coming of our Savior to this earth to fulfil the requirements of the Plan of Salvation.  

私たちが救い主の誕生を冬に祝うのか春に祝うのかは、あまり重要ではありません。 重要なのは、救いの計画が目的を満たすためにこの地上に救い主が来られるという素晴らしい出来事を思い起こすことです。

Today, some 2,000 years later, we still look to that wonderful birth as the dividing point in the history of the world.  We still measure our time from his birth.  And, as important as his birth was to us in the mortal world, it was far more important in the eternities.  The birth of our Savior began the final steps on the road to the great and eternal Atonement made by our Savior for all of Heavenly Father’s children.  

約二千年経った現在でも、その素晴らしい誕生を世界の歴史の分断点ととらえています。私たちは今でも主の誕生を起点に時間を測定しています。そして、私たちにとって主の誕生が人間の世界で重要であったのと同じくらい、永遠においてもはるかに重要なことなのです。救い主の誕生により、天父のすべての子供たちのために救い主がなされた偉大で永遠の贖罪への道の最後の歩みが始まりました。

It is the Atonement that granted each of us the opportunity to repent.  It is the Atonement that assures of the certainty of the resurrection.  It is the Atonement that promises eternal life to those who keep the commandments.

私たち一人一人に悔い改める機会を与えたのは贖罪です。復活が確かであることを保証するのは贖罪です。戒めを守る者に永遠の命を約束するのは贖罪です。

As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, amid the carols and presents and Christmas trees, let us also remember the eternal blessings that came from his perfect life and Atonement.  

キャロルとプレゼント、クリスマスツリーなどで救い主の誕生を祝うとき、主の完璧な人生と贖罪からもたらされた永遠の祝福も思い起こしましょう。

At the time of his birth, the world rejected him.  There was “no room in the inn” for the Savior of the world.  Instead of coming into this world surrounded by wealth and luxury, the Savior of all mankind come into this world surrounded by the poor and the humble.

主が誕生された時、世界は主を拒みました。世の救い主のため「宿には部屋がありませんでした」。富と贅沢に囲まれた世界に来られる代わりに、全人類の救い主は貧しい人々と謙遜な人々に囲まれた世界にやって来られました。

Things are not much different today.  Most of the world still rejects the teaching of the Savior.  It is the poor and the humble that recognize Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer.  

状況は現在もさほど変わりません。世界のほとんどはまだ救い主の教えを拒んでいます。イエス・キリストを私たちの救い主であり贖い主であると認めるのは、貧しく謙遜な人です。

Elder Neal A. Maxwell said it like this: “Each one of us is an innkeeper who must decide if there is room for Jesus”.  

ニール・A・マックスウェル長老は次のように述べています。「私たち一人一人は宿の主人であり、イエスのための部屋があるかどうかを決めねばなりません」

May we each find room in our heart for our Savior.  May we each find peace and hope as we celebrate his birth.  May we each express our gratitude every day for the great Atonement.

私たち一人一人が心の中に救い主のための部屋を見つけれますように。 主の誕生を祝うとき、私たち一人一人が平和と希望を見つけることができますように。 偉大な贖罪に対して、私たち一人一人が毎日感謝の気持ちを表せますように。
