Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him”. Matthew 2:1-2
The birth of the Savior had been foretold by prophets for centuries. We have many records by prophets in the Old Testament about the future birth of the Savior. We also have the testimonies and prophecies of the Book of Mormon prophets.
救い主の誕生は何世紀にもわたって預言者によって預言されていました。旧約聖書には、救い主の誕生について預言者の数多くの記録があります。モルモン書の預言者の証と預言もあります。
It is possible that there were prophets in other countries or among other peoples that we do not know about, who also prophesied about the coming of the Savior into the world. Since we are all children of a loving Heavenly Father, it is likely that righteous people throughout the world had been told that the Savior would be born.
救い主がこの世に来られることについて教えたた預言者が、私たちが知らない国々や人々の中にもいた可能性があります。私たちは皆、愛ある天父の子供なので、世界中の義にかなった人々に救い主がお生まれになることが知らされていても不思議ではありません。
We do not know who the “wise men” were, or what country they came from. We do not know how many of them there were. We do not even know when they came, although from the New Testament records, it seems likely that they came one or two years after the birth of the Savior.
「博士」とは誰で、どこの国から来たのかはわかりません。また何人いたのかもわかりません。彼らが来た時さえわかりませんが、新約聖書の記録から、彼らは救い主の誕生から1、2年後に来たようです。
What we do know is that they were righteous men, men who had been taught that the Savior would be born. They were men who believed in the signs that accompanied the birth of the Savior.
分かっているのは、彼らは義人であり、救い主の誕生を知っていた人たちだったということです。彼らは救い主の誕生に伴うしるしを信じた人々でした。
We know they were men of great faith, since they were willing to travel a great distance from a far away land to see the newborn Savior. They brought with them gifts to honor the Savior, showing their respect and reverence for the Savior. They had obviously been taught by prophets in their own land and, like the Nephites, understood that the signs which were given meant that the Savior had been born.
彼らは生まれたばかりの救い主を見るために遠く離れた土地からやってきたことから、信仰の強い人であったことを私たちは知っています。彼らは救い主を称える贈り物を持ってきて、救い主への敬意と崇敬の気持ちを示しました。彼らは明らかに自分たちの土地で預言者によって教えられており、ニーファイ人のように、与えられたしるしは救い主の誕生を意味することを理解していました。
As we celebrate the birth of the Savior, let’s look beyond the commercial side of Christmas, beyond the gift giving, beyond the feasting. Let’s remember that the birth of the Savior had been foretold by prophets in many lands since the beginning of the world. Let’s remember the most important thing, which is not the birth of a new baby, but rather the great Atonement of Jesus Christ.
私たちは救い主の誕生を祝うとき、クリスマスの商業的な面やプレゼント交換、豪華な食事ではなく、もっと大切なことに目を向けましょう。救い主の誕生は、世界の初めから多くの地で預言者によって預言されていたことを思い出してください。最も重要なことは、幼子の誕生ではなく、イエス・キリストの偉大な贖罪であることを忘れないでください。
Let’s remember that it is only through the Atonement made by our Savior that we have any hope of happiness in this world or in the world to come. Let’s think deeply about the great blessings that come to each of us because of the Atonement.
救い主の贖罪があるために、私たちはこの世や来るべき世で幸せになる望みを持てることを忘れないでください。贖罪が私たち一人一人にもたらす大いなる祝福について深く考えてみましょう。
It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that makes it possible for us to repent and be forgiven of our sins. It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that makes it possible for us to return to our heavenly home someday. It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that allows us to be resurrected.
イエス・キリストの贖罪があるために、私たちは悔い改め、罪を赦されるのです。イエス・キリストの贖罪があるために、私たちはいつの日か天の家に戻ることができるのです。イエス・キリストの贖罪があるために、私たちは復活できるのです。
During this Christmas season, let’s remember the faith of the wise men, who traveled from a far country to worship the Savior. Let’s resolve to be better followers of Jesus Christ. Let’s remember the great Atonement of Jesus Christ. Let’s remember that he is our Lord, our Redeemer, and our Savior.
このクリスマスシーズン、救い主を礼拝するために遠い国からはるばるやってきた博士たちの信仰を思い出してみましょう。イエス・キリストのより良い従者となることを決意しましょう。イエス・キリストの大いなる贖罪を忘れないように、そして救い主が私たちの主であり、贖い主であり、救い主であることを心に留めてこの時期を過ごしましょう。
