わたしを強くして下さるかたによって、何事でもすることができる。　ピリピ人４：１３

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.  Phillipians 4:13

In Paul’s letter to the saints living in Phillipi, Paul tells them about his many trials and hardships.  He teaches them that, through his many trials, he has learned very important lessons.

ピリピに住む聖徒へのパウロの手紙の中で、パウロは彼自身が受けた多くの試練と苦難について彼らに語っています。彼は、彼の多くの試練を通して非常に大切な教訓を学んだことを彼らに教えています。

All of us have many trials and hardships in our own lives.  We can learn from what Paul teaches us about his trials and suffering.  

私たちは皆、私たち自身の生活の中で多くの試練や苦難を経験します。私たちもパウロが教えた彼の試練と苦難から学ぶことができます。

We can learn that trials can have a positive result.  We can learn that trials help us to be more grateful for our blessings.  We can learn that trials and suffering can help us become better followers of Jesus Christ.  

私たちは試練からポジティブな結果が得られることを学ぶことができます。試練を通して受けている祝福に気が付き感謝を持てるようになれます。試練と苦難がイエス・キリストのより良い従者となる助けとなります。

In this scripture, Paul explains that the source of his strength in enduring trials is our Savior Jesus Christ.

この聖句では、パウロは試練を耐える力の源は救い主イエス・キリストであると説明しています。

We don’t know exactly what this sentence said when Paul first wrote it.  Through the many translations from Greek or Hebrew into Latin, then into English, then into Japanese, the original meaning is not very clear.

私たちにはパウロが最初に書いた時、この文が何を言っっているのか正確には分かりません。ギリシャ語やヘブル語からラテン語や英語、さらに日本語に翻訳されることで元の意味があまり明確でなくなりました。

There are at least two slightly different messages that Paul may have been trying to give us.

パウロが伝えようとしていたメッセージが少なくとも２つあります。

One possible message is that the Lord never gives us an assignment that we cannot fulfill.  This meaning is very similar to Nephi’s declaration that he “will go and do the things which the Lord has commanded”.

考えられるメッセージのひとつは、主は私たちが成し遂げれないアサイメントを決して与えられないことです。このメッセージは、ニーファイが「​行って、主​が​命じられた​こと​を​行ない​ます」という宣言に非常に似ています。

Paul may be saying that he can do all things, with the help of the Lord.  

パウロは主の助けがあればすべての事ができると言っているのでしょう。

Like Paul, we too can do all things that we are asked to do, if we seek the Lord’s help.  It does not matter what our particular calling or assignment is. What matters is that we accept the assignment, pray for help and guidance to complete the assignment in a manner pleasing to the Lord, and then go forward and do our best of fulfill the assignment.

パウロのように、私たちも主の助けを求めれば、求められることをすべて行うことができます。私たちの召しやアサイメントが何であるかは関係ありません。重要なのは私たちがアサイメントを受け入れ、主の喜ばれる方法で助けと導きを求めて祈り、そのアサイメントを果たすために最善を尽くすことです。

Whenever the Lord gives us an assignment, he will always give us the understanding, knowledge, strength, and ability to accomplish the assignment.  All we have to do is to go forward with faith and do our best.

主が私たちにアサイメントを与えられる時は、主は常に私たちにアサイメントを成し遂げるために理解と知識、強さ、能力を与えてくださいます。私たちがすべきことは信仰を持って前進し最善を尽くすことです。

A second possible message is similar, but slightly different.  

２番目のメッセージは似ていますが、わずかに異なっています。

Paul may be saying that, because of his experience with trials and suffering, he knows that the Lord will bless and guide him in all things.  Through his trials and hardships, he learned to rely on the Lord. He learned that the Lord may not always remove the trial, but will always bless us with the strength to endure the trial.

パウロは自分が経験した試練や苦難のために、主が全てにおいて彼を祝福し導かれると知っていると言ってるのかもしれません。彼の試練と苦難を通して、彼は主を信頼することを学びました。彼は主はいつも試練を取り除くとは限らないけれど、試練を耐え抜く力を常に祝福されるということを学びました。

Just like Paul, we can learn from our trials that the Lord is always ready to help us, to guide us, to bless us.  We can learn that the Lord will never leave us to suffer alone. We can learn that the Lord’s arms of mercy are always extended to us.

パウロと同じように、主は私たちの試練から私たちを助け、導き、祝福する用意が出来ていることを学ぶことができます。主は私たちをひとりで苦しむままには決してされないことを学ぶことができます。私たちは主があわれみの腕を常に私たちに差し伸べておられることを学ぶことができます。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the words of Paul.  Let’s remember that we too can “do all things” by relying on the Lord and by doing our best to serve him.  Let’s remember that the Lord will never leave us alone in our trials. Let’s remember that the source of all our strength is our Savior Jesus Christ.

パウロの言葉を覚えて来週を過ごしましょう。私たちも主に頼り、主に仕えるため最善を尽くすことによって「全ての事を行える」ことを忘れないようにしましょう。私たちが試練の中でも主は私たちを一人にされないことを覚えていましょう。私たちのすべての力の源は救い主イエス・キリストであることを忘れないようにしましょう。
