What do you know about the Dead Sea Scrolls?
The Dead Sea Scrolls are very interesting.
The Scrolls were first discovered in 1948 in a place called Qumran that is near the south-east end of the Dead Sea.
Some Arab boys were looking for their lost goats.
They were throwing rocks into the caves to see if any of the goats were hiding there.
In one cave, they heard something break.
They went into the cave and found some very old pottery jars.
Soon, scholars and scientists came to the caves to find more jars.
When the jars were opened, each one had a scroll inside it.
Over time, more than 800 different scrolls were found.
Most of them were badly damaged.
As they have been translated, fragments from every book of the Old Testament have been discovered.

Most of the scholars now agree that the scrolls were written by a group of Jewish people known as the Essenes.
The scholars think that the Essenes left Jerusalem about 300 BC and moved out into the desert near the Dead Sea.
The most common theory is that they left Jerusalem because of the wickedness of the people there.
Both the Jewish rabbis and the Christian scholars were very excited to translate the Scrolls.
During the first 10 years or so after the discovery, more than 1,000 articles and books were written about the Scrolls.
But as they began reading the scrolls, they came across very strange things.
Because of the strange things they found, most scholars stopped writing about the scrolls.
Everyone agrees that the people who wrote the scrolls lived in Israel between 300 BC and 100 AD.
There is no question that the scrolls were written by Jewish writers who lived one hundred years or more before the birth of Christ.
The first strange thing found in the Scrolls were prophesies about Jesus Christ.
The Jewish rabbis were shocked. How did Jewish people know about Jesus Christ?
Why did they write so many things about Jesus Christ?
Because of this strange thing, many Jewish rabbis lost all interest in translating the scrolls.
This made the Christian scholars happy.
They tried claim that Christianity was correct and that the Jewish religion was not correct.
But the Jewish rabbis said that this same strange information was a big problem for the Christian scholar too.
It has always been the claim of the Christian scholars that Christ started a brand new religion when he came.
Christianity does not want any connection with the old Jewish religion.
Yet, the Jewish writers of the scrolls clearly talked about Jesus Christ.
How could this be if Christianity was a totally new religion?
This caused a big problem for the Christian scholars, because they could not explain it.
Because of this strange thing, many of the Christian scholars lost all interest in translating the scrolls.
Here is a quick summary of the Dead Sea Scrolls:
- Some Jewish people had to leave Jerusalem because of the wickedness of the people
- Those Jewish people went out into the desert so they could live their religion
- They wrote many books about the prophesies of the prophets, especially the Prophet Isaiah
- They believed in and wrote about Jesus Christ
- They hid up those records to preserve them for future generations

While the Dead Sea Scrolls are not scripture, they show the very same pattern that we find in the Book of Mormon.
They are a testimony that Jesus Christ does speak to all righteous people.
The scrolls are a small part of the fulfilling of Nephi’s prophecy that many records will come forth in the last days.

発見後１０年位は、巻物について1000以上もの記事や本が書かれました。
しかし、巻物を読むにつれて大変奇妙なことに出くわしました。
発見した奇妙な事柄のせいで、ほとんどの学者たちは巻物について書くことをやめました。
巻物を書いた人々が紀元前300年から紀元100年の間にエルサレムに住んでいたということでは誰もが一致しています。
キリストの誕生の100年又はもっと以前に生きていたにユダヤ人の書き手によって巻物が書かれたことに問題を挟む余地はありません。
巻物に発見された最初の奇妙なことはイエス・キリストについての預言でした。
ユダヤ人のラビはショックを受けました。ユダヤ人はどのようにしてイエス・キリストのことを知ったのでしょうか？
なぜ、彼らはイエス・キリストについてそんなに沢山のことを書いたのでしょうか？

しかしユダヤ教のラビ達は、この奇妙な情報はキリスト教の学者にとっても大きな問題になると言いました。
キリスト教の学者達はいつもキリストがこの世に来てから新しい宗教を始めたと主張していたからです。
キリスト教は古いユダヤ教と何の関連も持ちたくありませんでした。
しかしながら、巻物を書いたユダヤ人たちは明らかにイエス・キリストについて語っています。
どのようにしてキリスト教が全く新しい宗教だと言えるのでしょうか？
これはキリスト教学者に大きな問題を投げかけました。何故ならそれを説明できなかったからです。
この奇妙なことによって、多くのキリスト教の学者たちが巻物を翻訳する興味を失いました。
これが死海文書の簡単な概要です。
- いくばくかのユダヤ人たちは人々の悪のためにエルサレムを去らなければなりませんでした。
- それらのユダヤ人たちは砂漠に行ったので自分たちの宗教を守ることができました。
- 彼らは預言者の預言について沢山の書を書きました。特に預言者イザヤについてです。
- 彼らはイエス・キリストを信じ、そのこと書きました。
- 彼らはその記録を未来の世代に残すために隠しました。
なんだかどこかで聞いた話ですね。
死海文書は聖典ではないのですが、モルモン書に見つけられるのと全く同じパターンが見られます。
それはイエス・キリストが全ての正しい人々に語った証です。
巻物は末の日に多くの記録が出てくるというニーファイの預言を成就する一部分なのです。
