したがって、悔い改めて、主なる神の声に聞き従おうとする者は幸いである。救われるのはこれらの者だからである。　ヒラマン書１２：２３

Therefore, blessed are they who will repent and harken unto the voice of the Lord their God; for these are they that shall be saved.  Helaman 12:23

In the 12th chapter of Helaman, Mormon writes some comments of his own about the sad history of the Nephite people.  The Nephites had gone through several periods of righteousness, followed by periods of great wickedness.  Mormon marvels at how foolish the people are.  

ヒラマン書12章では、モルモンがニーファイ人の悲しい歴史について書き残しています。ニーファイ人は正しい期間を幾度か過ごしたましたが、その後、邪悪の時代がやってきました。モルモンは人がどれほど愚かであるか驚き嘆いています。

Mormon comments on this time period, pointing out that when the Lord blesses the people, they start to be proud and begin to forget the commandments of the Lord.  When that happens, the Lord can no longer bless the people.  The people then suffer through wars and famines.  When they suffer, they finally begin to remember the Lord and begin to repent and to keep the commandments.

モルモンはこの期間について、主が民を祝福すると彼らは誇り高ぶるようになり、主の戒めを忘れ始めると

解説しています。そうなると主はもはや人を祝福することができなくなります。その後、人は戦争と飢饉で苦しみます。そして最終的に主を覚え、悔い改め、戒めを守り始めます。

Mormon says, “O how foolish, and how vain, and how evil, and devilish, and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men”.

モルモンは、「人がどれほど愚かであり、うぬぼれが強く、よこしまで、非道であるか、また、いかに早く不義を行うか、そして善を行うのがどれほど遅いのか」と述べています。

In fact, this cycle of living righteously and receiving great blessings, followed by pride and unrighteousness, is one of the key messages of the Book of Mormon.  

事実、正しく暮らし大きな祝福を受けた後、誇りと不義に陥るというサイクルは、モルモン書の重要なメッセージのひとつです。

It is a warning to us in our day.  We sometimes read about the Nephites and their problems and think, “I am not like them.  They were very foolish”.

それは今日の私たちへの警告でもあります。私たちは時々ニーファイ人とその問題について読む時、「自分は彼らのようではない。彼らはとても愚かだった」と思うことがあります。

But are we different?

しかし、私たちは彼らと違いますか？

In times of trial and hardship, it is common for people to remember the Lord and to beg for his blessings.  Sadly, it is also common for people, once they have received the desired blessings and are no longer suffering, to forget about the Lord and his commandments.

試練と困難の時代には、人は主を覚え、主の祝福を乞うことはよくあります。悲しいことに、望んでいる祝福を受け、困難の中にいない人は、主とその戒めを忘れることもよくあります。

It is a sad fact that this “Nephite cycle” is just as common in our day as it was among the Nephites.  When things are going well for us, it seems easy for Satan to tempt us to forget about the commandments.

この「ニーファイ人のサイクル」が今の時代もニーファイ人の時代と同じくらい起きていることは悲しい事実です。物事がうまくいっているとき、悪魔は戒めを忘れるように私たちを誘惑しやすいようです。

It must be disappointing to Heavenly Father to send down blessings to his children in their time of trial, only to have them forget about him as soon as the trial is over.

天父の子供が試練の中にある時、彼らを祝福し、その試練が過ぎ去るや否や天父の事を忘れてしまうのは天父を失望させることでしょう。

We need to remember the lessons of the Book of Mormon.  In particular, we need to remember the curse of the “Nephite cycle”.  We need to remember that failing to keep the commandments of the Lord will only lead to unhappiness.

私たちはモルモン書の教訓を覚えている必要があります。 特に、「ニーファイ人のサイクル」の呪いを覚えておく必要があります。主の戒めを守らないと惨めな状態になるだけだということを覚えておく必要があります。

We must be diligent in keeping the commandments, especially when things are going well for us.  We need to remember where those blessings came from and why the blessings were sent to us.  We need to remain humble and always give thanks to Heavenly Father for the great blessings we receive each day.

私たちは勤勉に戒めを守らねばなりません、特に物事がうまくいっているときは、それらの祝福がどこから来たのか、そしてなぜ祝福が私たちに送られたのかを覚えておく必要があります。私たちは常に謙遜で、毎日受けるすばらしい祝福を天父に感謝する必要があります。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember to be smarter than the Nephites.  Let’s remember to seek the Lord in pray in good times as well as in times of trial.  Let’s be humble and willing to repent of our mistakes and to keep the commandments always.  

新しい週が始まります。ニーファイ人より賢く過ごすようにしましょう。試練の時と同じように、良い時にも祈りをもって主を求めることを忘れないでください。私たちの過ちを悔い改め、戒めを常に守りたいという謙虚な気持ちを持ちましょう。
