しかし、そのことの意味を理解した人はわずかであった。彼らの心がかたくなであったからである。そして、予型を見ようともしないほどかたくなな人が大勢おり、彼らは死んでしまった。彼らが見ようとしなかったのは、それで自分が癒されるとは信じなかったからである。おお、わたしの同胞よ、もしあなたがたが癒しをえるために、目を向けるだけでよいとしたら、あなたがたはすぐにも見ようとしないだろうか。それとも、不信仰のままで心をかたくなにし、怠けて目を向けようとしないで死ぬことを望むだろうか。アルマ書３３：２０－２１
But few understood the meaning of those things, because of the hardness of their hearts. But there were many who were so hardened that they would not look, therefore they perished. Now the reason they would not look is because they did not believe that it would heal them. O my brethren, if ye could be healed by merely casting about your eyes that you might be healed, would ye not behold quickly, or would ye rather harden your hearts in unbelief, and be slothful, that ye would not cast about your eyes, that ye might perish? Alma 33:20-21
In this scripture, Alma is teaching the people about faith. He reminds the people of the story in the Old Testament, in the 21stchapter of Numbers, when the people of Moses were wandering in the desert. Because of their failure to follow the words of the prophet Moses, the Lord sent poisonous snakes into their camp. Many people were bitten by the snakes.
この聖句ではアルマが人々に信仰について教えを説いています。彼は人々に旧約聖書、民数記２１章にあるモーセの民が荒野をさまよっていた時の話を思い起こさせています。預言者モーセの言葉に従わなかったことで主は彼らの野営地に毒蛇を送られたのです。そして大勢その蛇に噛まれました。
The Lord commanded Moses to make a brass snake and put it up on a pole. Moses told the people that, if they were bitten, all they had to do was to look at the brass snake and they would be healed.
主はモーセに真鍮の蛇を作り棒の先に取り付けるよう命じました。モーセは人々に、もし噛まれたなら、ただ棒の先にある真鍮の蛇を見るだけでよい、そうすれば癒されると言いました。
The amazing thing is that many people, even though they were bitten, refused to look at the brass snake. Those people died. Others, who had faith, looked at the snake and were healed.
驚いたことに噛まれた多くの人ですら真鍮の蛇を見ることを拒んだのです。そして彼らは死にました。他の信仰のある人々は蛇を見て癒されたのです。
When we read this story today, we sometimes smile and think about how foolish those people were. It was such a simple thing to do. Just look. That was all they had to do. And it would heal them. But some still refused.
この話を読むとき私たちは何と彼らは愚かだったんだろうと考え笑うことでしょう。それは行うにはとても単純なことでした。見るだけでよいのです。彼らはそうするだけでよかったのです。そして癒されたはずなのです。しかしそれでも幾人かは拒んだのです。
We tell ourselves that we would never be that foolish. We tell ourselves that we would have looked. We tell ourselves that we would have followed the counsel of the prophet.
私たちは絶対に彼らのように愚かではないと言うでしょう。自分なら見たはずだと。そして預言者の勧告に従っただろうと言うでしょう。
But are we really any different than those people?
しかし私たちは彼らとどれ程違っているのでしょうか？
Do we follow the small and simple things that prophets have told us to do in our day?
今日の預言者が私たちに教える小さく簡単な事柄に従っているでしょうか？
The prophets in our day have told us to have family and personal prayer each morning and each evening. The prophets in our day have told us to have Family Home Evening each week. The prophets in our day have told us to attend all of our meetings on Sunday. The prophets in our day have told us to read the Book of Mormon.
現代の預言者は私たちに家族と個人の祈りを毎朝、毎晩するよう教えています。現代の預言者は私たちに毎週家庭の夕べを行うよう教えています。現代の預言者は私たちに日曜日にはすべての集会に出席するよう教えています。現代の預言者は私たちにモルモン書を読むよう教えています。
Do we follow the counsel of the prophets in these small and simple things?
あなたは預言者のこうした小さく簡単な勧告に従いますか？
Today we are surrounded by many “poisonous snakes”. These modern day “poisonous snakes” are the temptations of Satan. The poison in these snakes does not kill our physical body, but can be very dangerous to our spiritual body.
今日私たちは数多くの「毒蛇」に囲まれています。それら現代の「毒蛇」はサタンの誘惑です。こうした蛇の毒は私たちの肉体を滅ぼしはしませんが私たちの霊にはとても危険なものです。
Just as in the days of Moses, the Lord has prepared a way for us to be healed from the bites of the modern day “poisonous snakes”. We have been taught by modern day prophets to have faith, to look to the Lord, to be healed by obedience to his commandments.
丁度モーセの時代のように、主は私たちの為に現代の「毒蛇」に噛まれても癒される道を用意してくださいました。現代の預言者によって信仰を持つこと、主に心を向けること、主の戒めに忠実であることで癒されることを教わっています。
Are we willing to do the small and simple things so we can be healed? Or are we going to be like the people in the days of Moses?
あなたは癒されための小さく簡単なことを行おうとしていますか？それともモーセの時代の人々のようでしょうか？
Let’s resolve to always follow the counsel of the prophets. Let’s try harder this week to have faith in the Lord’s promises. Let’s not be like the people in the days of Moses. Let’s look and be healed.
常に預言者の勧告に従うと決意しましょう。主の約束に信仰を持って今週をより頑張って過ごしましょう。モーセの時代の人々のようにならないようにしましょう。見て癒されるようにしましょう。
