しかし見よ、わたしは兄たちに言った。『主が生きておられ、またわたしたちが生きているように確かに、わたしたちは主から命じられたことを成し遂げるまでは、荒れ野にいる父のところへは下って行きません。ニーファイ第一書３：１５
But behold I said unto them that: as the Lord liveth and as we live, we will not go down unto our father in the wilderness until we have accomplished the thing which the Lord hath commanded us. 1 Nephi 3:15
This is not as famous a scripture as 1 Nephi 3:7, but it still teaches us an important lesson.
この聖句は第一ニーファイ3章7節ほど有名ではありませんが、それでも私たちに大切なレッスンを教えています。
Nephi and his brothers had been given an assignment to go to Laban’s house and to get the Brass Plates. They had already tried once and had failed. Nephi’s brothers were ready to give up and to go back home. They had tried, but they had failed. What else could they do?
ニーファイと彼の兄弟はレーバンの家に行き真鍮版を持ってくるという任務を受けました。彼らは一度挑戦しましたが失敗に終わっていました。ニーファイの兄弟は諦めて家に帰る準備をしていました。彼らは試みてみましたが失敗したのです。他に何が出来たのでしょう？
Nephi, however, was determined to accomplish the assignment. They tried a second time. They failed again. After the second attempt, Laman and Lemuel again wanted to give up and go back home.
ニーファイはしかしながら任務を果たすと決意していました。彼らは二度目の挑戦をしました。またもや失敗に終わりました。二度目の試みの後、レーマンとレムエルはまた諦めて家に戻りたいと思いました。
But Nephi refused to give up. He wanted to complete the assignment. He tried again and on the third attempt, he was successful.
しかしニーファイはあきらめる事に反対しました。彼は任務を成し遂げたいと考えていました。彼は再び試み三度目の挑戦で成功したのです。
There is an important lesson in this for us.
ここには私たちにとって大切な教えがあります。
Sometimes we are given an assignment that seems difficult. We do our best, but we fail. So what do we do then? Do we follow Nephi’s example or do we follow Laman’s example?
ときどき私たちには難しそうに思える召しや責任が与えられます。一生懸命やってみても失敗したりします。それで私たちはどうしますか？ニーファイの模範に従いますか、それともレーマンの方ですか？
Sometimes we don’t even try one time. We think that we will fail, so we don’t even try once.
ときどき私たちは挑戦すらしないことがあります。私たちは初めからできないと思い一度も挑戦しないのです。
Nephi teaches us that we must keep trying. He teaches us that we should never give up. He teaches us that if we keep trying, we will do better.
ニーファイは私たちに諦めずに挑戦し続けるよう教えています。彼は私たちに決して諦めないよう教えています。彼は私たちに挑戦し続ければ、より上手にできるようになると教えています。
Maybe our “difficult” assignment is to teach a Primary class, or to give a talk in Sacrament meeting, or to home teach a family that does not want to hear our message, or to help with a ward activity at a time that is not convenient for us, or to find our ancestors, or to serve a mission, or something else that seems hard to us.
おそらく「難しい」アサイメントにはプライマリーのクラスで教えることや、聖餐会でお話すること、話をあまり聞きたがらない家族をホームティーチングすることだったり、都合の悪いときにワードの活動を助けたり、先祖を探し出したり、宣教活動をしたりと、他にも沢山あると思います。
But this is not limited to just assignments in the Church. It also applies to things in our everyday life. Maybe you would like to learn to play the piano, or to sing, or to play soccer, or to learn to drive, or to learn to sew, or to lose weight, or to exercise regularly, or maybe some other goal.
しかしこれは教会のアサインメントに限ったことではありません。私たちの日々の生活にも当てはまります。たとえばピアノや歌、サッカー、車の運転、裁縫を習いたかったり、減量、定期的に運動をしたり、他にも色々な目標があるでしょう。
- Do one thing that you think you cannot do.
- Fail.
- Try again.
- Do better the second time
- Maybe fail again
- Try again
- 出来ないと思うことを何か一つやってみる
- 失敗する.
- 再び挑戦する
- 二度目はもっとうまく出来る
- おそらく今回も失敗するかもしれない
- さらに挑戦する
Do not be discouraged because you fail.
失敗したからといって落胆しないでください。
Remember, the only people who never fail are those who never try to do something new.
失敗したことのない人とは何も新しいことに挑戦したことのない人だということを覚えていてください。
Let’s all try to do one new thing this week, even if we fail. Let’s not be afraid to fail. Let’s follow Nephi’s example keep trying.
今週、失敗してもいいので何か新しいことに挑戦してみましょう。失敗を恐れないようにしましょう。ニーファイの模範に従い、挑戦し続けましょう。
I know that we can accomplish many things if we do not become discouraged. Don’t give up! Keep trying!
落胆してやる気をなくさなければ私たちは多くのことを成し遂げれることを私は知っています。諦めないでください。挑戦し続けてください。
