このように、いちばん年上のレマンとレムエルは父にたいしてつぶやいた。彼らがつぶやいたのは、自分たちを造られたあの神の計らいを知らないためであった。ニーファイ第一書２：１２

And thus Laman and Lemuel, being the eldest, did murmur against their father.  And they did murmur because they knew not the dealings of that God who had created them.  1 Nephi 2:12

In this scripture, Nephi tells us about his older brothers, Laman and Lemuel.  Unlike Nephi, Laman and Lemuel did not believe the things their father Lehi taught them.  

この聖句ではニーファイが兄のレマンとレムエルについて語っています。彼らはニーファイとは違い父親リーハイの教えたことを信じませんでした。

Nephi tells us that his older brothers “did murmur against their father.”  He also explains why they “murmured”.  They murmured because “they knew not the dealings of that God who had created them.”

ニーファイは兄たちが「父に対してつぶやいた（文句を言った）」と語っています。さらに彼らがどうして「つぶやいた」のかを説明しています。それは彼らが「自分たちを造られたあの神の計らいを知らないため」だったからです。

In other words, they complained because they did not understand the revelations and teachings that God gave to their father.

つまり、神が父（リーハイ）に授けられた啓示や教えを理解しなかったために文句を言ったのです。

We sometimes look at Laman and Lemuel and think that they were very weak and disobedient.  We say to ourselves that we would never do the things that Laman and Lemuel did.  We feel that we would have followed Lehi’s teachings if we were in his family.

私たちは時々、レマンとレムエルのことを見て彼らは弱くて不従順だと思い、自分たちは決してレマンやレムエルのようなことはしないと考えます。また、もし自分たちがリーハイの家族ならばリーハイの教えに従っただろうと考えます。

But sometimes, in our own lives, we do act just like a Laman or a Lemuel.  Sometimes, we do “murmur”.  Sometimes we complain against our Father.

しかし時折、私たちは自分たちの生活の中でレマンやレムエルのような行動をします。私たちは時々「つぶやき」、私たちの天父に文句を言います。

We all have challenges in this life.  That is what this life is for.  But challenges are hard.  They make us use extra effort.  They make us work hard.  They are not easy.

私たちは皆、この世において試しを受けます。それはこの世の目的だからです。しかし試しはつらく、よりいっそうの努力を要求され、頑張らねばなりません。簡単なことではありません。

So when challenges come, we sometimes act like Laman and Lemuel.  We complain.  We don’t want to “leave our home in Jerusalem”.  We want to stay where it is easy.

試しが訪れるとき私たちは時折、レマンやレムエルのように行動します。文句を言い、「エルサレムの我が家を去り」たくないのです。私たちは気楽に居れるところに留まりたいのです。

When we get a new calling, when we have health challenges, when we have a child that strays from the gospel, when we have challenges with our spouse, all these things sometimes cause us to murmur.

私たちは新しい召しを受ける時、健康上の試練を受ける時、福音から離れた子供を持つ時、伴侶との関係で試しを受ける時など、これらの事柄が原因で苦情を言います。

Why?

何故でしょう？

Just like with Laman and Lemuel, we murmur because we do not understand the plan God has for us.  We want to do it our way.  We forget that God knows exactly what we need to do.  We forget that God loves us and wants us to be happy.  We forget that God can see what we need to do to prepare for a future life with him.

レマンとレムエルのように、私たちは神様が私たちに用意された計画を理解しないために文句を言うのです。自分たちは自分の方法で行動したがるのです。私たちがまさに何をすべきなのかを神様がご存知なことを忘れているのです。私たちは神様が私たちを愛しておられることや私たちに幸せになって欲しいことを忘れているのです。私たちは将来神様と共に暮らすためにどのような準備をすべきなのか神様はご存知であることを忘れています。

When challenges and trials come, let us remember not to be like Laman or Lemuel.  Let us not murmur because we don’t understand.  Let us instead seek understanding and wisdom.  Let us go forward with faith.  Let us trust in the Lord.

試しや試練が訪れるとき、レマンやレムエルのようであってはいけません。理解できないからといって文句を言うのはやめましょう。かわりに理解と知恵を求め、信仰を持って前進しましょう。主を信頼しましょう。

I know that we can be like Nephi.  I know that we can overcome our challenges, with the help of the Lord.  I know that all the challenges will end someday.  I know that the Lord will bless us and guide us through each of our challenges.  I know we will receive the promised blessings if we are faithful through our trials.

私たちはニーファイのようになれることを知っています。主の助けによって試練を乗り越えることができると知っています。すべての苦難にはいつか終わりが来ることを知っています。主は私たちが苦難の只中でも、祝福し導いてくださると知っています。試練にあるとき信仰を持って過ごすならば約束された祝福を受けれることを知っています。
