For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  Romans 1:16

新約聖書の学習で私たちは今、パウロがアジア全域のさまざまな教会に宛てて書いた手紙を学んでいます。

We now come in our study of the New Testament to the letters Paul wrote to the various branches of the Church throughout Asia.

これらの手紙は、現代における総大会のお話に似ているとも言えます。パウロの手紙は通常、特定の人々に宛てて書かれ、多くの場合特定の原則や教義について彼らに教えています。

These letters are somewhat similar to General Conference talks in our day.  Paul’s letters are typically addressed to a particular group of people and often teach those people about a specific principle or doctrine.  

パウロの手紙を理解するのは容易ではありません。その理由は少なくともふたつあります。第一に、パウロの手紙は何度も異なる言語に翻訳されていることです。おそらく、もとはヘブライ語かギリシャ語で書かれていたのでしょう。その後、ラテン語に翻訳されました。それから数百年後、英語やその他の現代語に翻訳されていきました。当然、翻訳されるたびに情報は失われていきました。聖霊に導かれることなく、翻訳者たちは最良の判断で翻訳を行いましたが、パウロが教えていることを必ずしも理解していたわけではありませんでした。

The letters of Paul can be difficult to understand.  There are at least two reasons for this.  First, they have been translated several times into different languages.  They were probably written originally in either Hebrew or Greek.  They were then translated into Latin.  Hundreds of years later, they were translated into English and other modern languages.  With each translation, information was lost.  Without the Holy Ghost to guide them, the translators used their best judgement in making the translations, but did not always understand what Paul was teaching.

第二に、パウロが何故特定のトピックについて書いたのか必ずしもわからないことです。私たちはパウロが書いた手紙のほんの一部しか持っていません。ある教会ではどんな問題があったのか、彼らが福音をどれだけ理解していたのか、なぜパウロが彼らに手紙を書いたのか、わからないのです。それは、電話の会話で一方だけを聞くようなものです。

The second challenge is that we don’t always know why Paul was addressing a specific topic.  We have only a few of the letters that Paul.  We don’t know what the problems at a particular Branch may have been, or how much of the gospel they understood, or why Paul was writing to them.  It is a little like hearing only one side of a telephone conversation.  

パウロの手紙から学べることはまだ沢山あります。それぞれの手紙の背景にある事情をすべて知らなくても、重要な教義を学ぶことはできます。

There is still much that we can learn from Paul’s letters.  Even if we do not know all of the circumstances behind each letter, we can learn important doctrine.

この聖句でパウロは、イエス・キリストの福音がすべての人を救う神の力であることを思い起こさせています。パウロは私たちに、証を堅くし、永遠の原則を大胆に伝えるよう勧めています。

In this particular scripture, Paul reminds us that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God for the salvation of all people.  He encourages us to be firm in our testimonies and bold in our sharing eternal principles.

私たちにとって、福音を伝えることは少し怖いことかもしれません。イエス・キリストのメッセージを伝えたい相手からの拒絶や嘲笑を恐れることもあると思います。しかし真実は、パウロが明確に教えているように、福音のメッセージは天父の子どもたち一人ひとりを救うためのもだと言うことです。

For many of us, sharing the gospel can be a little scary.  We are often afraid of rejection or ridicule from those to whom we want to share the messages of Jesus Christ.  But the truth is, as Paul teaches us very clearly, the message of the gospel is for the salvation of every one of Heavenly Father’s children.  

イエス・キリストに従う私たちの義務は、救いのメッセージを周りの人々に伝えることです。しかし、そのために宣教師として召される必要はありません。救い主の弟子の良き模範となることで、福音を伝えることができるのです。私たちは、小さな親切や奉仕の行いの中で、自分の信念を分かち合うことができます。ラッセル・M・ネルソン大管長の「常に平和をつくる者でありなさい」という勧告に従うことによって、天の御父がすべての子供たちに抱いておられる愛を周りの人々に理解してもらうことができるのです。

Our duty as followers of Jesus Christ is to share the messages of salvation with others.  We do not have to be called as missionaries to do that.  We can share the gospel simply by being good examples of a disciple of our Savior.  We can share our beliefs in simple acts of kindness or service.  We can help others to understand the love that Heavenly Father has for all his children by following the counsel of President Russell M. Nelson to always be a peacemaker.  

新しい週が始まります。使徒パウロが教えたことを忘れずに過ごしましょう。イエス・キリストの福音が幸福と永遠の喜びの道であることを心に留めましょう。自分の信念、希望、喜びを、同じように幸福を求めている周りの人々と喜んで分かち合いましょう。イエス・キリストの真の従者であるために最善を尽くしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember what the Apostle Paul taught us.  Let’s remember that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the way of happiness and eternal joy.  Let’s be willing to share our beliefs, our hopes, our joy, with those around us who are also seeking happiness.  Let’s do our best to be a true follower of Jesus Christ.
