まことに、まことに、わたしはあなたがたに言う。もし過去、現在、未来のすべてがモロナイのようであれば、見よ、地獄の力でさえもとこしえにくじかれてしまい、また悪魔は決して人の子らの心を支配する力を持たないであろう。　アルマ書４８：１７

Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.  Alma 48:17

The last few chapters of the Book of Alma focus on the terrible wars and the battles between the Nephites and the Lamanites.  

アルマ書の終わりの方では、恐ろしい戦争や、ニーファイ人とレーマン人との戦いに焦点が置かれています。

It is interesting to see that most of the trouble was caused by apostate Nephites, like Zarahemnah and Amalickiah, rather than by the Lamanites themselves.  In verse 36 of chapter 47, Mormon inserts a comment about this, saying that it was those Nephites who dissented over to the Lamanites that were the most wicked people.

During this period of warfare, we read about the man who had been appointed to be the commander of all the Nephite armies, Capitan Moroni.  Moroni was only 24 years old when he took command of the Nephite armies.  Mormon must have felt a kinship to Moroni, since he (Mormon) took command of the Nephite armies when he was only 16 years old.  Both Moroni and Mormon led the Nephites into battle many times.

この争いではニーファイ人の軍隊の総司令官に任命された、モロナイという人が出てきます。モロナイがニーファイ人の軍隊を指揮したとき、モロナイは25歳でした。モルモンは16歳のときにモルモンがニーファイ人の軍隊を指揮したので、モロナイに特別な親しみを感じたに違いありません。モロナイもモルモンもニーファイ人を何度も戦いに導きました。

One of the most well-known stories about Capitan Moroni is his creation of the Title of Liberty.  The Title of Liberty as a flag, or a banner, on which Moroni wrote: In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.  This was the banner that the Nephites used to gather together all the faithful people to stand in defense of liberty and freedom.

司令官モロナイについて最も有名な話のひとつは、自由の旗を作ったことです。モロナイは自由の旗に「我々の神と宗教、自由、平和、妻子のために」と書きました。これはニーファイ人が平和と自由を擁護するために立つため、すべて忠実な人々を集めるために使用した旗でした。

Moroni was a brave and righteous leader.  He often gave Lamanite prisoners the option to make a covenant to keep the peace, after which Moroni would let them go back to their own lands.  He did not kill them or keep them as slaves, but let them go back home.  Even though he was the commander of a powerful army, he “did not delight in the shedding of blood”.

モロナイは勇敢で正しい指導者でした。彼はしばしばレーマン人の捕虜に平和を維持するために契約を結ぶ選択肢を与えました、その後、モロナイは彼らが自分の土地に戻ることも許しました。彼らを殺したり奴隷にしたりせず、家に戻しました。彼は強力な軍の指揮官ではありましたが「血を流すことを喜びとしませんでした」。

While Amalickiah was inciting the Lamanites to hate the Nephites, Moroni was helping the Nephites strengthen their defenses.  He directed the building of great walls around many of the Nephite cities, to give protection to the defenders against any attack.  We are told that “he was a man who did labor exceedingly for the welfare and safety of his people”.

アマリキヤがレーマン人にニーファイ人を憎むよう扇動している間、モロナイはニーファイ人に守りを強化させました。彼はニーファイ人の町の周りに防壁の建設を指示し、あらゆる攻撃から守るようにしました。「彼は民の幸いと安全のために大いに働いた人であった」と言われています。

Most importantly of all, “he was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ”.  His only goal was to protect his people, to allow them to live in peace, to let them practice their religion.

最も重要なことは、「彼は確固としてキリストを信じた人であった」ということです。 彼の唯一の願いは、人々を守り、平和に暮らせるようにし、宗教を守ることでした。

Now, none of us is likely to ever be the leader of a great army.  None of us will have to protect our families or lands against attackers.  None of us will lead people into battle.

今は、私たちの誰も大きな軍隊の指導者になることはないでしょう。私たちの誰も家族や土地を攻撃者から守る必要はありません。私たちの誰も人々を戦いに導いたりもしません。

But, we can all follow the example of Capitan Moroni in being “firm in the faith of Christ”.  We can follow his example of laboring for the safety and welfare of those around us.  We can follow his example in keeping the commandments of God.

しかし、私たちは皆、「確固としてキリストを信じる」という司令官モロナイの模範に従うことができます。 彼の模範に従い、私たちの周りの人々の安全と幸福のために働くことができます。神の戒めを守るという彼の模範に従うことができます。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the example of Capitan Moroni.  Let’s be better followers of our Savior Jesus Christ.  Let’s be more concerned with the safety and welfare of those around us, our families, our friends, our neighbors.  Let’s stand as examples of true disciples of the Lord.
