Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord.  Doctrine & Covenants 87:8

Section 87 of the Doctrine and Covenants is very interesting.  This revelation, given to the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1832, is a prophecy about the great and terrible sufferings that will happen in the American Civil War.  The American Civil War began in 1860, 28 years after this revelation was received.  And, as the Lord revealed, the American Civil War did begin with the state of South Carolina.

This revelation is a somber reminder of the bad things that will happen before the Second Coming of the Savior.  We are told that there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes and that war shall be poured out upon all nations. This is a warning to the world to repent.

この啓示は、救い主の再臨の前に起こるであろう暗い出来事を思い起こさせています。飢饉、疫病、地震が発生し、あらゆる国々で戦争が繰り広げられると言われています。これは世の人々に悔い改めるよう警告しています。

However, it also contains a comforting promise from the Lord.  In verse 8, the Lord commands us to “stand in holy places”.  This is for our protection against the calamities that will come in the last days.

しかし、そこには主からの慰めの約束も含まれています。8節で、主は「聖なる場所に立つ」よう私たちに命じておられます。これは、終わりの日に来る災難から私たちを守るためです。

What does it mean to “stand in holy places”?  What are “holy places”?

「聖なる場所に立つ」とはどういう意味ですか？ 「聖なる場所」とは何ですか？

We have been taught in General Conferences that there are many “holy places”.  

私たちは総大会で「聖なる場所」がたくさんあると教えられてきました。

One of the “holy places” is our own home.  It doesn’t matter if we are surrounded by a family, or if we are living all alone.  It doesn’t matter whether we live in a large house or a very small apartment.  It doesn’t matter where on the earth we live.

「聖なる場所」の一つは私たちの家です。私たちが家族に囲まれているのか、一人暮らしをしているのかは関係ありません。私たちが大きな家に住んでいるか、非常に小さなアパートに住んでいるかは関係ありません。地球上のどこに住んでいるかも関係ありません。

What does matter is how we invite the Spirit of the Lord to be with us.  Do we make our home a place where the Spirit is welcome?  Are there prayers in our home each day?  Are the scriptures read frequently in our home?  Is there anything in our home that would offend the Spirit?

重要なのは、私たちがどのように主の御霊を招いているかです。私たちの家を御霊が喜んで来られる場所にしていますか？私たちの家には毎日祈りがありますか？私たちは家で頻繁に聖文を読んでいますか。私たちの家に御霊を怒らせるものはありますか？

We can make our own home a place of refuge from the storms of life by making it a “holy place”.  As we do our best to become more like our Savior and to keep his commandments, the Spirit will bless our home with peace.  

私たちは自分の家を「聖なる場所」にすることで、人生の嵐からの避難場所にすることができます。私たちが救い主のようになり、主の戒めを守るために最善を尽くすとき、御霊は私たちの家を平安で祝福します。

Another “holy place” is our Church buildings.  Do you do your best to attend all of the meetings, especially the Sacrament meeting?  Do you do your best to serve in your calling?  Do you try to help others and to be kind to everyone that comes to Church?  If we do our best to serve and to attend our meetings, our Church building will become one of the “holy places”.

もう一つの「聖なる場所」は教会の建物です。すべての集会、特に聖餐会に出席するために最善を尽くしていますか。あなたの召しに奉仕するために最善を尽くしていますか？あなたは他の人を助け、教会に来るすべての人に親切にしようとしていますか？私たちが奉仕し、集会に出席するために最善を尽くすならば、私たちの教会の建物は「聖なる場所」の一つになるでしょう。

The most important “holy place” is the temple.  It is in the temple that we receive the ordinances of the priesthood that are necessary for our eternal happiness.  It is in the temple that we can become eternal families.  It is in the temple that we can receive revelation and guidance for our lives.  In order to stand in this “holy place”, we must keep the commandments of the Lord and live our lives so as to be worthy of this great blessing.

最も重要な「聖なる場所」は神殿です。わたしたちが永遠の幸福に必要な神権の儀式を受けるのは神殿です。 私たちが永遠の家族になることができるのは神殿です。私たちが人生の啓示と導きを受けることができるのは神殿です。この「聖なる場所」に立つためには、主の戒めを守り、この大きな祝福を受けるにふさわしい生活を送る必要があります。

We have been taught many times that there will be trials and difficulties in this life.  But we have also been promised that, if we stand in holy places, we will be protected.  The Lord will always protect and bless those who stand in holy places.

私たちは、この人生には試練と困難があると幾度も教えられてきました。しかし、私たちが聖なる場所に立つならば、私たちは保護されることも約束されています。主は常に聖なる場所に立つ人々を守り、祝福してくださいます。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember the Lord’s commandment to us to always stand in holy places.  Let’s do our best to make our own homes a holy place.  Let’s do our best to attend our meetings and to serve in our callings.  And let’s do our best to attend the temple as often as our circumstances will allow.
