すると彼は自分の立場を弁護しようと思って、イエスに言った、「では、わたしの隣り人とはだれのことですか」。ルカ１０：２９

But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?  Luke 10:29

善きサマリア人の話は、新約聖書の中で最も有名なもので、宗教活動に参加しない人の間でもよく知られています。

The story of the good Samaritan is perhaps one of the most famous of all the New Testament scriptures.  It is well known even among those who do not participate in any religious activity.

ほかのたとえ話と同様に、イエスは非常に重要な教義を、誰にでも理解できる簡単な言葉で教えておられます。泥棒に襲われ、助けを必要としている人の気持ちは誰にでも理解することができます。サマリア人が示した親切は誰にでも理解することができます。

As with the other parables, Jesus teaches a very important doctrine in simple words that can be understood by anyone.  Everyone can understand how it would feel to be the man who was attacked by thieves and who needed help.  Everyone can understand the kindness shown by the Samaritan.

この話は分かりやすいものです。ある男がエルサレムからエリコに向かう旅をしていました。このことから、彼がユダヤ人であったことが分かります。旅をしていると、彼は盗賊に襲われました。強盗は彼を殴り、お金と持ち物をすべて盗みました。男は傷つき、殴られたまま道端に放置されました。彼は自分ではどうすることもできませんでした。

The story is simple.  A man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho.  This tells us that he was a Jewish man.  As he traveled, he was attacked by bandits.  The bandits beat him up and stole all of his money and possessions.  The man was left wounded and beaten by the side of the road.  He was not able to help himself.

たまたま通りかかった祭司が、その傷ついた男性に気づきました。祭司には、困っている人に仕えるという神聖な責任があります。しかし、彼はただ通り過ぎ、その傷ついた人を助けることは何もしませんでした。

A priest happened to come by and noticed the wounded man.  As a priest, he had a divine responsibility to serve those in need.  However, he simply walked on by and did nothing to help the wounded man.  

次に、レビ人が道を歩いてきました。レビ人は、今日の教師や執事と同じ神権の職についていました。祭司と同様、貧しい人、困っている人を助けるという神聖な責任がありました。しかし、祭司と同様、彼は傷ついた人を無視し、そのままにして行きました。

Next, a Levite came down the road.  A Levite held the same priesthood office as a Teacher or a Deacon does today.  Like the priest, he had a divine responsibility to help the poor and the needy.  However, just like the priest, he ignored the wounded man and just left him there.

最後に、サマリア人がやってきて、傷ついた人に気づきました。サマリア人である彼は、祭司やレビ人と同様に、ただ通り過ぎるだけでよかったかもしれません。サマリア人はユダヤ人に嫌われていました。主が井戸でサマリア人の女に話しかけた話を覚えているでしょう。その女性は、ユダヤ人がサマリア人に話しかけたことに驚きを隠せませんでした。

Finally, a man from Samaria came and saw the wounded man.  As a Samaritan, he could have been justified is simply walking on by, just as had the priest and the Levite.  The Samaritans were hated by the Jews.  Remember the story of the Lord speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well?  The woman expressed surprise that a Jew would even speak to a Samaritan,

しかし、このたとえでは、憎まれ、軽蔑されていたサマリア人が憐れみを持ったのです。その人を連れて行き、応急処置をしたのはサマリア人でした。傷ついた人を安全な場所に連れて行き、そこで休ませ回復させたのもサマリア人でした。傷ついた人のために費用を負担してくれたのもサマリア人でした。

Yet in this parable, it was the hated and despised Samaritan who had compassion.  It was the Samaritan who took the man and gave him first aid.  It was the Samaritan who took the wounded man to a safe place, where the man could rest and recover.  It was the Samaritan who offered to pay for the expenses of the wounded man.

そしてイエスは、「だれが盗賊に襲われた人の隣り人になったと思うか」と質問されました。

Jesus then asked the question, “who was the neighbor of him who fell among thieves?”

私たちも同じように、「私の隣人は誰か」と自問自答する必要があります。

We need to ask ourselves the same question, “Who is my neighbor?”

司祭のように、困っている人がいたら素通りしたり、レビ人のように、苦しんでいる人を無視するのでしょうか？イエス・キリストの従者として、私たちは、貧しい人や困っている人を助けるという神聖な責任を持っています。

Like the priest, do I just walk on by when I see someone in need?  Like the Levite, do I just ignore someone who is suffering?  As followers of Jesus Christ, we each have a divine responsibility to help the poor and the needy.

そういう人を知っていれば、助けるのは簡単です。その人が私たちと同じであれば、助けるのは簡単です。 解決しやすい問題であれば、助けるのは簡単です。

It is easy to help someone when we know them.  It is easy to help someone when they are like us.  It is easy to help someone when it is an easy problem to solve.

このたとえ話の中で、救い主は自分とは全く異なる人たちをも助けるよう私たちに期待しておられます。私たちは、自分たちが助けるに値しないと思うような人をも助けるよう期待しておられます。私たちは、すべての人を神様の愛する息子や娘として扱うことが期待されているのです。

In this parable, the Savior teaches us that we are expected to help even those who may be very different from us.  We are expected to help those who we may not think deserve our help.  We are expected to treat everyone as a beloved son or daughter of God.

新しい週が始まります。私たちの周りで困難を抱えているかもしれない人々のことに気づくようにしましょう。困っている人がいたら、立ち止まって助けてあげようという気持ちになりましょう。忙しいスケジュールを脇に置いて、苦しんでいるかもしれない人々の必要に目を向けることを厭わないようにしましょう。サマリア人のように、たとえ自分に敵意を持っていたとしても、助けを必要としている人を憐れんだサマリア人のように行動できるよう、最善を尽くしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s be more aware of those around us who may have challenges.  Let’s be more willing to stop and help someone in need.  Let’s be more willing to put aside our busy schedules and focus on the needs of those who may be suffering.  Let’s do our best to act like the Samaritan, who had compassion on someone who probably hated him, but who was in need of help.
