He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona; for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.  And I say unto thee, thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  Matthew 16:15-18

This is a very interesting scripture, for many reasons.  In these verses, the Lord asks the apostles who they think he is.  Peter answers for them all, saying that he is the Christ, the Son of God.  

救い主はペテロと他の使徒たちに、その知識は人の学問によるものではなく、啓示によるものであることを告げておられます。そして、救い主は、教会は啓示という岩の上に建てられると教えられました。

The Savior tells Peter and the rest of the apostles that they have this knowledge by revelation and not by man’s learning.  The Savior then teaches them the Church is to be built upon the rock of revelation.

カトリック教会は、ペテロに対する主の言葉を、ペテロが教会を築く岩であると解釈しています。このようにペテロが最初の「教皇」であったため、歴代のローマ司教はすべて神から「教皇」として任命されていると主張しています。

The Catholic Church interprets the Lord’s words to Peter as meaning that Peter is the rock upon which the Church will be built.  They claim that, because Peter was thus the first “pope”, all of the successive Bishops of Rome have been divinely appointed as “popes”.

しかし、この節はそう言っているのではありません。何を言われているのかを理解するためには、原文のギリシャ語を理解する必要があります。

However, that is not what this verse says.  We need to turn back to the original Greek to understand what is being said.

ペテロの本名は「シモン・バルヨナ」です。名前の「バルヨナ」の部分は、ヘブライ語で「ヨナの子」を意味します。「ペテロ」という名前は、救い主が最初につけられた愛称です。それはギリシャ語で石や岩を意味する「ペトロス」からきてます（アラム語ではペテロではなく「セファス」と表記されますが、同じ意味です）。

Peter’s real name was Simon bar-jona.  The “bar-jona” part of the name means “son of Jona” in Hebrew.  The name “Peter” was a nickname given to him by the Savior at their first meeting.  It is a Greek name, from the word “petros” meaning a stone or a rock (in Aramaic, the name is written as “Cephas” rather than as Peter, but has the same meaning). 

イエスは「あなたに言う。あなたはペテロである。そして、わたしはこの岩の上にわたしの教会を建てよう」と言われましたが、「ペテロ」と「岩」を二つの異なるギリシャ語を使って区別されました。ペテロという名前はペトロスですが、「岩」を表す言葉はペトラです。

When Jesus said, “I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church,” he differentiated between “Peter” and the “rock” by using two different Greek words. The name Peter is petros, but the word for “rock” is petra.

しかし、古代ギリシャの文献によると、この2つの言葉は実際には異なるものを指していることがわかります。ペトロスは小さな石を意味し、ペトラは対照的に岩盤や大きな基礎の巨石を指していました。

Those terms may sound similar to us, but ancient Greek literature shows that they actually refer to two different things. Petros was used to signify a small stone; petra, by contrast, referred to bedrock or a large foundation boulder.

救い主がここで言われたことは、「ペテロ（シモンの愛称）よ、教会は啓示という岩、すなわち土台の上に建てられるのだ」と言うことです。

So what the Savior says here is “Peter (using Simon’s nickname), the Church will be built upon the rock, or the foundation, of revelation.  

今日、私たちは個人としても教会全体にとっても、啓示が重要であることを理解しています。預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して、天は再び開かれ、天父からその子供たちへ啓示が流れ始めました。

Today, we understand the importance of revelation, both for each of us as individuals and for the Church as a whole.  Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the heavens were once again opened and revelation began to flow from Heavenly Father to his children.  

私たちは、ネルソン大管長が教会全体のために啓示を受けていると信じています。啓示は、預言者や使徒だけのものではありません。同じように、私たちも自分の生活の中で啓示を受けることができます。戒めを守るために最善を尽くし、罪を悔い改め、神の導きを求めるとき、聖霊の力によって啓示がもたらされるのです。

We believe that President Nelson receives revelation for the entire Church.  Revelation is not just for the prophets and apostles.  In the same way, we can receive revelation in our own lives.  As we do our best to keep the commandments, as we repent of our sins, and as we ask for divine guidance, revelation will come to us by the power of the Holy Ghost.  

聖霊は、イエスが神の子キリストであることを私たちに証ししてくれます。聖霊は、私たちに真理を教えてくれます。聖霊は、私たちの祈りに答え、私たちの人生の指針を与えてくれます。

The Holy Ghost will testify to us that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.  The Holy Ghost will teach us truth.  The Holy Ghost will give us answers to our prayers and guidance in our lives.

啓示の重要性を理解し、自分の人生にどのように活用できるかを理解することは、大きな祝福です。

It is a great blessing to understand the importance of revelation and how we can use it in our own lives.  

新しい週が始まります。自分に必要なことのために最善を尽くして啓示を求めましょう。知るべきことを聖霊に教えてもらえるようにふさわしくなりましょう。また小さな声、促し、啓示に耳を傾けましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s do our best to ask for revelation for our personal needs.  Let’s be worthy to have the Holy Ghost teach us the things we need to know.  Let’s listen for the still small voice, for promptings, for revelation.
