それゆえ、わたしは、わたしの御霊の力によってもろもろの国民を打ってえり分けるために、世の弱い者たち、無学で見下されている者たちを呼ぶ。教義と聖約　３５：１３

Wherefore, I call upon the weak things of the world, those who are unlearned and despised, to thrash the nations by the power of my Spirit.  Doctrine & Covenants 35:13

In this Section of the Doctrine & Covenants, the Lord gives specific instructions to Sidney Rigdon.  Sidney came to the Prophet in December of 1830 and asked the Prophet what the Lord wanted him to do.  Section 35 is the Lord’s response to Sidney’s question.

教義と聖約のこの章で、主はシドニー・リグドンに具体的な指示を与えておられます。1830年12月、シドニーは預言者のところに来て、主が彼に何を望んでおられるのか預言者に尋ねました。35章は、シドニーの質問に対する主の回答です。

One interesting thing the Lord says in this Section applies to us today just as it did to Sidney in 1830.  In verse 13, the Lord explains how the work of the kingdom will go forward.

興味深いのは、この節で1830年に主がシドニーに言われたことは、今日の私たちにも当てはまるということです。13節で主は王国の業がどのように進むかを説明されています。

The Lord says he will use the “weak things” of the world to search out the righteous from all nations.  Those who are “unlearned” are the ones that the Lord has entrusted with this great responsibility.

主は、世の「弱い者」を使って、すべての国から義人を探すと言われています。主がこの大きな責任を委ねられた人々とは「無学」な人々のことです。

“Unlearned” does not mean uneducated or illiterate.  It does not mean people with no experience.  It does not mean people with no skills or talents.

「無学」とは、教育を受けていない、または読み書きができないという意味ではありません。経験のない人という意味でもありません。 技術や才能のない人を意味するものでもありません。

In the view of the world, the “learned” are important people.  They are the leaders, the politicians, the educators, the doctors.  They are people that have the respect of the world because of their learning.

世の観点から言えば、「学識がある」ことは重要な人物とみなします。指導者や政治家、教育者、医師などはその様な人物のことです。彼らは学識があるために世の中から尊敬を受けています。

That is not how the Lord works, though.  The Lord cares about how willing we are to obey the commandments, about how willing we are to walk in his paths, about how willing we are to serve others.

しかし、主はそのようには行われません。主は私たちが戒めに従う意欲、主の道を歩む意欲、他の人に仕える意欲を心にかけておられます。

In the eyes of the world, many of us are considered to be “ weak” and “unlearned”.  In the eyes of the Lord, though, we are considered to be valiant and faithful servants.  The qualifications to serve in the kingdom of God are not university degrees, but faith, humility, charity, and a love of God.

世間では、私たちの多くは「弱く」「無学な」者であると考えられています。しかし、主の目には、私たちは勇敢で忠実な僕であると考えられています。神の王国で奉仕する資格は大学の学位ではなく、信仰、謙遜、慈愛、そして神への愛です。

The Prophet Joseph Smith was certainly one of the weak and unlearned people.  Yet he was called of God to be the prophet to open the final dispensation of time.  While he had little formal education, he was taught by the Holy Ghost what to do and how to do it.  

預言者ジョセフ・スミスは、確かに弱くて無学な者のひとりでした。それでも彼は、最後の神権時代を開くための預言者として神から召されました。彼はほとんど正式な教育を受けていませんでしたが、聖霊から何をすべきか、そしてそれをどのように行うかを教えられました。

Following in the Prophet’s footsteps have been other prophets, other weak and unlearned people, whom the Lord chose to lead his Church.  

預言者の足跡をたどったのは、主が教会を率いるために選ばれた預言者や弱くて無学な人々でした。

This weekend, we have the great opportunity to hear directly from the Lord’s prophets and apostles.  Just like the Prophet Joseph Smith, these prophets and apostles today teach us the word of the Lord.  The Lord guides and directs the Church today.

今週末は、主の預言者や使徒たちから直接話を聞く絶好の機会があります。預言者ジョセフ・スミスのように、これらの預言者と使徒たちは今日、私たちに主のみ言葉を教えています。今日も主は教会を導いておられます。

How blessed we are to have living prophets and apostles.  How blessed we are to be able to hear their instructions and teachings.  How blessed we are to receive words of revelation and guidance from these servants of the Lord.  

生ける預言者と使徒がいることは、私たちにとってなんと幸いなことでしょう。彼らの勧告や教えを聞くことができて、私たちはなんと幸いなことでしょう。こうした主の僕から啓示と導きの言葉を受けることは、私たちにとってなんと幸いなことでしょう。

Do we value their instruction?  Do we treat it as scripture?  Do we study and pray about what they teach us?

彼らの勧告を大切にしますか？ それらを聖文として扱いますか？彼らが教えることについて研究し祈りますか？

As we go through this next week, let’s do our best to remember what we have been taught.  Let’s study and ponder the things they have said.  Let’s read the General Conference talks in the Liahona.  Let’s use them as our own personal Liahona for the next six months.  They will guide is in the way of truth and light.

新しい週が始まります。教えられたことを覚えているよう最善を尽くしましょう。彼らが話すことを研究し深く考えましょう。リアホナから総大会のお話を読んでみましょう。これからの6か月間、それらを私たち自身の個人的なリアホナとして利用しましょう。彼らは真理と光の道へと導いてくれるでしょう。
