And we had obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us, and searched them and found that they were desireable; yea, even of great worth unto us, in preserving the commandments of the Lord unto our children.  Wherefore, it was wisdom in the Lord that we should carry them with us, as we journeyed in the wilderness towards the land of promise.  1 Nephi 5:21-22

This scripture teaches us an important lesson.  

この聖句は私たちに大切なものを教えています。

You remember that Nephi and his brothers had been commanded by the Lord to go back to Jerusalem and get the Brass Plates from Laban.  It was a very difficult assignment.  

ニーファイと彼の兄たちがエルサレムに戻りレーバンから真鍮版の記録を手に入れるようにと主から命じられたことをあなたは覚えていると思います。

The first time they tried to get the plates, Laban tried to kill them.  Laman and Lemuel wanted to give up and go back to their father’s tent.  But Nephi told them that they needed to keep the commandment that had been given them by the Lord.

初めてその版を手に入れようとしたとき、レーバンは彼らを殺そうとしました。レーマンとレムエルはあきらめて父のいるテントに戻ろうとしました。しかしニーファイは主から命じられた戒めは守る必要があると彼らを諭しました。

They went back to Laban a second time and offered to buy the plates.  Laban saw all their gold and silver.  Laban sent his servants to try to kill Nephi and his brothers again.  They had to leave all their gold and silver and run away.  Again they failed.

そこで彼らは再びレーバンのところに戻り、その判を買いたいと申し出ました。レーバンは彼らが持ってきた金や銀を見ると、彼の家来にニーファイとその兄弟を殺させようとしました。彼らはそれらの金や銀を置いたまま逃げなければなりませんでした。またもや失敗に終わったのです。

Finally, Nephi went by himself back into the city.  He found Laban, killed him, and obtained the Brass Plates.

最後に、ニーファイは一人で町に入っていきました。彼はレーバンを見つけ、殺して真鍮版を手に入れました。

None of them knew just how important those Brass Plates were.  Even Nephi, who was determined to keep the commandments, did not really know why he had to do all those things.

（そのときは）だれもその真鍮版（の記録が）どれほど大切なものかわかりませんでした。断固とした決意を持って戒めを守ろうとしたニーファイでさえ何故このようなことをすべて行わねばならないのかよくわかりませんでした。

It was not until after all their trials and efforts that Nephi began to understand how important that assignment was.  It was not until after they had accomplished their assignment that they were able to read the Brass Plates.  It was not until after they read the Brass Plates that they began to understand the great importance of having the Brass Plates.

ニーファイがその任務の大切さがわかり始めたのはすべての試練と努力を経験してからでした。また真鍮版を読めたのは彼らが任務を遂行したからでした。真鍮版を持つことの大切さを理解し始めたのは真鍮版を読んでからのことでした。

Many times, we are like Nephi and his brothers.  We are sometimes given assignments that seem impossible for us to accomplish.  We are sometimes given assignments that seem of no value.  We are sometimes given assignments that we don’t understand.

私たちは多くの場合、ニーファイや彼の兄弟のようです。私たちは時々とても成し遂げられないと思える責任を受けます。私たちは時々何の価値もないように思えたり、理解できない責任を受けます。

We need to remember what Nephi taught us in this scripture. 

Sometimes we do not understand the importance of our assignment until after we have completed it.  Sometimes we do not understand how many people will be blessed in the future because of our actions today.  Sometimes we do not understand what the Lord is going to do.

私たちはニーファイが教えたこの聖句を覚える必要があります。時々私たちは責任の大切さを、それを成し遂げるまで理解できません。私たちは時々私たちの今の行いによって将来どれだけ多くの人が祝福を受けるのかわからずにいます。また私たちは時々主が何をなさろうとしているのかわからずにいます。

When we receive assignments, we need to be like Nephi.  We need to go forward with faith, knowing that the Lord is able to accomplish all his work.  We need to go forward with faith, not knowing how important our assignment may be to others in the future.  We need to trust in the Lord and complete our assignments.

私たちが責任を受ける時、ニーファイのようでなければなりません。私たちは、主はすべての業を成し遂げられるという信仰を持って前進しなければなりません。私たちは、私たちの責任が将来他の人々にとってどれほど重要なものかわからなくても信仰を持って前進しなければなりません。私たちは主に信頼を置き、私たちの責任を遂行しなければなりません。

I know that we can accomplish every assignment that is given to us.  I know that miracles will happen as we do our best to accomplish our assignment.  I know that this is the work of the Lord.

私は私たちに与えられたすべての責任を遂行できると知っています。私は責任を遂行するよう最善を尽くすとき奇跡が起こることを知っています。私はこれが主の業であると知っています。

Let’s make an effort this week to be more like Nephi.  Let’s remember that we cannot always see the end result of our assignment.  Let’s always try to go forward with faith.  

今週、努力してニーファイのように振舞いましょう。私たちは責任の最終結果が常に見えているとは限らないことを覚えていましょう。信仰を持って前進することをいつも試みましょう。
