あなたがたは心を注いで理解しようとしてこなかった。したがって、あなたがたは賢明ではなかった。モーザヤ書１２：２７

Ye have not applied your hearts to understanding; therefore, ye have not been wise.  Mosiah 12:27

In this scripture, Abinadai is speaking to the wicked priests of king Noah.  He tells them that they are the teachers of the people, but they have not taught the people correctly.  He reminds them of the duty to learn about the gospel.  He tells them that they “have not been wise”.

この聖句ではアビナダイがノア王の邪悪な祭司たちに話しています。彼らが民の教師であるにもかかわらず正しく教えていないと諌めています。また彼らに「いままで賢明ではなかった」と言い、福音について学ぶ務めを怠っていると注意しています。

There is an important message in this scripture for us.

この中で私たちにとっても大切なメッセージがあります。

Just like the wicked priests, we have been taught the gospel.  We have been taught the commandments.  We have been taught the Plan of Happiness.

邪悪な祭司たちのように、私たちも福音を教えられています。私たちは戒めを教えられ、幸福の計画を教えられました。

But that is not enough.  As Abinadi explains, we need to apply our “hearts to understanding”.

しかしそれだけでは十分ではありません。アビナダイが説明するように私たちは「心を注いで理解しよう」となければなりません。

This means that we must study the gospel.  This means that we must seek the Holy Ghost.  This means that we must make an effort to learn all that we can about the principles of the gospel.

この意味は福音を学ばねばならないということです。聖霊を捜し求め、福音の原則について学ぶよう、すべての努力をしなければならないと言う意味です。

The Lord expects us to use the talents and the knowledge that he has given us.  He expects us to study diligently.  He expects us to use those talents to help others.

主は私たちに与えてくださった才能や知識を役立てるよう期待しておられます。主は私たちが勤勉に学び、その才能を使って他の誰かを助けるよう期待しておられます。

We have the scriptures.  We have the General Conference talks.  We have many lesson manuals, books, and magazines.

私たちには聖典があります。総大会のお話もあります。沢山のレッスンマニュアルや本、雑誌があります。

We are expected to read these things.  We have been repeatedly told that we should read the scriptures each day.  We have been told to study the messages from General Conference.  We have been told to attend our Church meetings and classes.

私たちはそれらを読むよう期待されていますし、聖典も毎日読むよう繰り返し教えられています。私たちは総大会のメッセージを勉強するよう、また教会の集会やクラスにも出席するよう言われています。

But sometimes we just take the easy path.  We read one or two verses of scripture and then go to sleep.  We watch only one or two sessions of General Conference and do not study the talks when they are printed in the Ensign and Liahona.  We attend our Church meetings, but do not participate in the class discussions.  

しかし私たちは時折、楽な道を選んでしまいます。たとえば眠る前に聖句を一つか二つだけ読む、総大会のセッションを一つ二つ観るだけでEnsign やリアホナが発刊された時に、その話を勉強しない、教会の集会に出席しますがクラスの話し合いには参加しないなどです。

We need to remember what Abinadai taught.  

私たちはアビナダイの教えを覚えておく必要があります。

We need to “apply our hearts to understanding”.  “Apply” is an action verb.  It means to use great effort.  It means to do our best.  It means to work hard.

私たちは「心を注いで理解しようと」しなければなりません。（英語の）「Apply」は動作動詞です。それは甚大な努力を使うという意味です。また最善を尽くし、一生懸命に働くという意味です。

May we follow the teaching of Abinadai and be “wise”.  May we “apply” our hearts to understanding.  May we use the talents and knowledge that the Lord has given us.

私たちもアビナダイの教えに従い、「賢明で」ありましょう。心を「注いで」理解するようにしましょう。主から頂いた才能と知識を使いましょう。

If we do this, we will be wise servants.  We will be able to help others.  We will be able to increase in knowledge.  We will be able to receive the blessings promised to the faithful.

そうするならば私たちは賢い僕となるでしょう。他の誰かを助けることが出来るでしょうし、知識を増すことが出来るでしょう。また従順なものに約束された祝福を受けることが出来るでしょう。

I know that we can do this.  I know that we can be “wise”.  I know that the Lord expects us to work hard and to do our best.  I know that we will be blessed as we follow the teaching of Abinadai.

私たちはそれが出来ると知っています。私たちが「賢明」であれると知っています。私は主が私たちに一生懸命働くこと、最善を尽くすことを期待しておられると知っています。私たちがアビナダイの教えに従えば祝福されることを知っています。
