さて、わたしは兄たちに言った。「わたしたちはまたエルサレムへ上って行きましょう。そして、主の命令を忠実に守りましょう。まことに、主は全地にも増して力ある御方なのですから、どうしてラバンとその家来の五十人よりも力が劣ることがあるでしょうか。いや、ラバンに何万人あっても主の力にはかないません。ニーファイ第一書４：１
And it came to pass that I spake unto my brethren, saying: Let us go up again unto Jerusalem, and let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord; for he is mightier than all the earth, then why not mightier than Laban and his fifty, yea, or even his tens of thousands? 1 Nephi 4:1
This is an interesting scripture. Nephi and his brothers had been given the assignment to go to Jerusalem and to get the Brass Plates from Laban. They had already tried twice and had failed both times.
これは興味深い聖句です。ニーファイとその兄弟たちはエルサレムに行きラバンから真鍮版をとってくるようとの任務を受けました。彼らはすでに二度挑戦していましたがともに失敗していました。
Laman and Lemuel were angry with Nephi and wanted to give up. They did not think that they could accomplish the assignment. They were scared of Laban. They thought that he was too powerful.
レーマンとレムエルはニーファイに腹を立て、そして諦めたいと思いました。彼らはその任務を果たすことなどできないと思いました。彼らにはレーバンがとんでもなく強く思え、彼を恐れていました。
In this scripture, Nephi reminds his brothers that the Lord is more powerful than “all the earth”, even more powerful than Laban. He tells them they need to be faithful in keeping the commandments.
この聖句ではニーファイが主は「全地にも増して」力のある御方で、レーバンよりも力があることを兄弟たちに思い起こさせています。彼は信仰を持って戒めを守る必要があると教えました。
We can also learn from this scripture.
私たちもこの聖句から学ぶことが出来ます。
Many times in our own lives, we have a “Laban” that we are scared of. Maybe the “Laban” in our lives is a new assignment to do something that seems difficult. Maybe our “Laban” is a trial of poor health, or a child who strays from the gospel, or the loss of a loved one.
私たちの人生でも幾度も私たちが恐れる「レーバン」に出会います。恐らく私たちの人生の「レーバン」は難しく見える何かをするような新しい責任だったり、健康の試練、福音から離れた子供、愛するものの死だったりします。
Whatever our own “Laban” is, we need to follow the example of Nephi.
私たちの「レーバン」が何であれ、ニーファイの模範に従う必要があります。
We need to remember that the Lord is more powerful than any “Laban”. The Lord knows each one of us as individuals. He knows about our own trials. He knows about our own “Labans”. He is always ready to help us accomplish our assignments. He loves us more than we can understand.
私たちは、主はどんな「レーバン」よりも力を持っておられることを覚えている必要があります。主は、私たちひとりひとりや私たちの抱えている試練をご存知です。私たち自身の「レーバン」をご存知なのです。主は常に私たちが任務、責任を達成する助けをする準備が出来ています。主は私たちの理解を超えて私たちを愛しておられます。
But there are important things that we must do if we want the help of the Lord.
しかし主の助けが欲しいなら私たちにはすべき大切なことがあります。
Just like Nephi, we must do everything that we can to overcome our own “Laban”. Even when we try and fail, we must not give up. We must keep trying. We must always go forward with faith.
丁度ニーファイのように私たちは自身の「レーバン」を克服できるようすべてのことを行わねばなりません。たとえ試みて失敗しても諦めてはいけないのです。私たちは努力し続けなければならないのです。信仰を持って常に前進しなければなりません。
Most importantly, as Nephi teaches us, we must “be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord”.
もっとも大切なのはニーファイが教えているように私たちは「主の命令を忠実に守らねばならない」ということです。
If we do this, then just like Nephi, we will be successful. It may take time. It may take much effort. It may take many attempts. But if we are faithful, the Lord will bless us and help us to accomplish our assignments.
もしそうするなら、まさにニーファイのように私たちは成功することでしょう。時間がかかるかも知れません。多くの努力がいるかもしれません。何回も試みなければならないかもしれません。しかし忠実であれば主は私たちを祝福し任務、責任を遂行できるよう助けてくださいます。
I know that we can be like Nephi. I know that the Lord will bless us in our assignments if we work hard and do everything that we can do. I know that we can keep the commandments of the Lord. I know that, just like Nephi, we will be successful if we do these things.
私は私たちがニーファイのようであれると知っています。私は私たちがもし出来るすべてのことを行い、一生懸命に頑張るなら、私たちの任務、責任において祝福してくださると知っています。私は私たちが主の戒めを守れると知っています。まさにニーファイのようにこれらを行うなら私たちは成功すると知っています。
