主はその民をシオンと呼ばれた。彼らが心を一つにし、思いを一つにし、義のうちに住んだからである。そして、彼らの中に貧しい者はいなかった。モーセ書７：１８

And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them.  Moses 7:18

We often use the word “Zion” when speaking about the Church.  But what does Zion really mean?  

私たちは教会について話すとき「シオン」という言葉をしばしば使います。しかし、シオンとはそもそもどういう意味なのでしょう。

In this short scripture, the Lord defines what Zion means.  He tells us that it is where the righteous saints live.  Not only is it the name of the place where they live, it is also the name for the people who live there.

この短い聖句で、主は「シオン」とは何かを定義しておられます。そこは正しい聖徒が住むところだと主は言われています。住む場所の名前だけではなく、そこに住む民の名前でもあるのです。

There are three important requirements for Zion listed in this scripture.

聖典にはシオンのための三つの重要な必要条件が書かれています。

First, in Zion, the people are “of one heart and one mind”.  This means that they are united in thought and purpose.  

まず、シオンでは民は「心を一つにし、思いを一つにし」ているのです。これは思いと目的において一致しているという意味です。

Being united does not mean that everyone is exactly the same.  It means that everyone has the same standards.  In the Church, the standards are the same for everyone.  No one is required to pay 11% for tithing.  No one is allowed to pay 9% for tithing.  Everyone pays the same 10%.  

一致するということは皆がまったく同じという意味ではありません。それは皆が同じ標準を持っているということです。教会では標準は全員に共通のものです。誰も什分の一に11% 収めるようには要求されませんし、9% だけ収めてよいともいうこともありません。すべての会員が同じ10% 収めるのです。

How do we become united?  The most important step is to make the Savior the center of our lives.  We need do our best to keep all of his commandments.  We need to faithfully follow those he has called to lead us.  If we do these things, we will become united as a people.

どのようにして一致するのでしょう？もっとも重要なステップは救い主を私たちの生活の中心に置くことです。私たちは主のすべての戒めを守るよう最善を尽くさねばなりません。私たちは（私たちを導くために）召された指導者に忠実に従う必要があります。もしそれらを行うならば私たちは一致した民となるのです。

Second, the scripture says that the people “dwelt in righteousness”.  

二つ目に、聖句ではその民は「義のうちに住んだ」と言っています。

This means that we must keep the commandments.  It means that we cannot participate in any of the sinful activities of the world.  We have to live in the world, but we must not follow the teachings of the world.

これは私たちは戒めを守らなければならないという意味です。それは世の中の罪深い活動に参加してはいけないという意味です。私たちは世にあっても世の教えに従ってはいけないのです。

Third, “there were no poor among them”.  

三つ目に、「彼らの中に貧しい者はいなかった」ということです。

This means that we must be generous with the material blessings that we have received.  It means that we need to pay our fast offerings.  It means we need to participate in service projects.  It means we need to do everything we can to eliminate poverty.  It means we need to learn to be content with the things that we have.  It means we must not covet.

これは、受けている物質的な祝福を惜しみなく与えるべきであるという意味です。それは私たちは断食献金を支払う必要があるという意味です。サービスプロジェクトに参加したり、貧困を除くために出来ることをすべてする必要があるという意味です。また自分が持っているものに満足することを学ぶ必要があり、（他人のものを）むさぼってはならないと言う意味です。　

As we do these three things, we can become a Zion people.  We will be built upon the Law of the Celestial Kingdom that is described in verse 5 of Section 105 of the Doctrine and Covenants.  It means that we will be living the way the Savior wants us to live.

私たちはこれら三つの事柄を行うならばシオンの民になれるのです。私たちは教義と誓約105章5節で述べられている日の栄えの王国の律法の上に築きあげられるのです。またそれは救い主が私たちに望んでおられるように生きるという意味です。

As we being this new year, may we work hard to become a Zion people.  May we work hard to make the Savior the center of our lives.  May we work hard to keep all of his commandments.  May we work hard to serve the poor and the needy.

新年を迎えるにあたり是非シオンの民となれるよう頑張りましょう。救い主を私たちの生活の中心に置くよう頑張りましょう。救い主のすべての戒めを頑張って守りましょう。貧しい者や助けの必要とする者に手を差し伸べましょう。

I know that if we will do these things, we will receive all the blessings that have been promised to the people of Zion.  I know that we will be living the Law of the Celestial Kingdom.  I know that we will be worthy to live once again with our Heavenly Father.  I know that all these things are true.

私はこれらのことをすればシオンの民に約束されたすべての祝福を受けると知っています。また私たちは日の栄えの王国の律法に従って生きていることを知っています。私は天父と再び共に住むのにふさわしくなれることを知っています。私はこれらのことが真実だと知っています。
