それゆえ、シオンについて心に慰めを得なさい。すべての肉なるものはわたしの手の内にあるからである。安らかにしていて、わたしが神であることを知りなさい。教義と聖約１０１：１６

Therefore, let your hearts be comforted concerning Zion; for all flesh is in mine hands; be still and know that I am God.  Doctrine & Covenants 101:16

This scripture was given by the Lord to the Prophet Joseph Smith at a time when the early members of the Church were suffering great persecutions.  Many of the Church members in Missouri had their homes burned, their farm animals killed, and their personal belongings destroyed.  It was a time of great hardship.

この聖句が預言者ジョセフ・スミスに与えられたとき、初期の教会の会員は酷い迫害を受けていました。ミズーリの多くの会員は家を焼かれ、農場の家畜が殺され、個人の所有物も破壊されてしまいました。それは酷い苦難の時でした。

The Prophet Joseph Smith was very worried about their sufferings and wanted to know how to help those people.  In response to his prayers, the Lord gave him this revelation.

預言者ジョセフ・スミスは彼らの苦痛をとても按じ、どのようにして彼らを救えるのか知りたいと切望していました。彼の祈りの答えとして主はこの啓示を与えられました。

It is interesting that the revelation does not say that the Lord will destroy the wicked people.  It does not say that the persecutions will stop.  It does not say that the Church members will be saved.

興味深いことにその啓示で主は邪悪な人々を滅ぼすとは言われませんでした。迫害が終わるとも、教会員が救済されるとも言われませんでした。

The message in this scripture to those early Saints is a message that applies to us today.  What the Lord said in this revelation is that “all flesh is in my hands”.  

初期の聖徒に宛てたこの聖句にあるメッセージは今日の私たちにも当てはまります。この啓示で主が言われたことは「すべての肉なるものはわたしの手の内にある」と言うことです。

That means that the Lord knows about our sufferings.  He knows about our trials.  He knows about the difficult circumstances that confront us sometimes.

それは主は私たちの苦しみをご存知だという意味です。私たちの試練や、目の前に立ちはだかる苦しい状況をも主はご存知だということです。

He tells us to let our “hearts be comforted”.  That means that we do not need to worry about the future.  It means that the Lord will help us through our difficult times.  It means that we can find peace, even in times of trial.

主は私たちに「心に慰めを得なさい」と言われています。それは私たちが将来のことに不安を感じる必要は無いという意味です。主は困難な時期にも救いの手を差し伸べ、試練の中でも平安を見出せるようにしてくださるのです。

Most importantly, the Lord says “be still and know that I am God”.  

最も大切なのは主が「安らかにしていて、わたしが神であることを知りなさい」と言われていることです。

As parents, many of us had had times when a child was unhappy or sad or angry.  Sometimes this was because they wanted something that we, as parents, knew was not good for them.  Even though the child was unhappy, we knew that it was better for the child not to have what they were asking for.  We told them to “be still”.

私たちは親として自分の子供が不満を持ち、悲しんだり怒りを感じていることを経験したことがあるに違いありません。それは私たち両親が良くないものだと知っているものを彼らが欲しがった時かもしれません。子供が嬉しくなくても、欲しがるものをあげない方がよいことを私たちは知っています。私たちは子供たちに「安らかである」よう言います。

In the same way, the Lord tells us to “be still”.  Even though we may be unhappy or sad or angry, just as a loving parent does, our loving Heavenly Father tells us to “be still”.  The Lord knows what is best for us.  He knows what we need to learn.  He knows what will help us become more like him.

同じように主は私たちに「安らかである」よう言われています。たとえ私たちは不満を持ち、悲しんだり怒りを感じていても丁度愛する両親のように私たちの愛する天父は「安らかである」よう言われています。主は何が私たちに一番よいかご存知です。主は私たちが何を学ぶべきかご存知です。主は私たちが天父のようになるために何が一番助けになるのかご存知です。

The message in this, “be still and know that I am God”, is just as important to us today as it was to those early Church members.  We need to go forward, with faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ, even in times of trial.  Especially in times of trial.  

「安らかにしていて、わたしが神であることを知りなさい」というメッセージは初期の教会の会員のように現代の私たちにも同じように大切なものです。私たちはたとえ試練の中でも救い主イエス・キリストに信仰を持って前進しなければなりません。いや、むしろ試練の時には特にそうです。

Let’s try harder this week to “be still”.  Let’s try harder to trust in the Lord and to have faith in his promises.  Let’s try harder to have peace in our hearts, even in difficult times.  If we do so, we will receive the blessings that we need.

今週「安らかである」よう努めましょう。主を信頼し主の約束に信仰を持つよう頑張りましょう。困難なときにも心に平安を持つよう努めましょう。そうするならば私たちは必要な祝福を受けることでしょう。
